Bodycount dev: F*ck realism photo

Bodycount lead Stuart Black isn't impressed with how realistic you can make your game. In fact, he thinks realism can get f*cked if it doesn't help the game, and should be discarded in favor of fun. Can anybody argue with that? Only a complete moron.

"If realism doesn’t help the game, f*ck it, throw it away," declares Black. "I’ve known Codemasters all my gaming life, but I’d never thought about working for them. But it came to me through an agency, and I thought, what the hell. And when I went up there -- I was just really impressed by the attitude towards development. It felt like, here’s a place I can get some creative freedom, some creative control and really develop something I want to develop."

Bodycount is looking like it'll be a fun game, and with Black caring more about making the game enjoyable as opposed to realistic, it appears to be in good hands. After all, who really needs realism? We have, y'know, reality for that.

I agree with this guy. When has realism given us anything other than dirt-brown landscapes?

Yes, realism can kiss my ass, give me a gun that can fit in my pocket and evaporate mountains.

We've got enough reality, a good example being, life as a whole. Shit I'm knee deep in it at the moment.

Yeah Operation Flashpoint took the piss, then again im sure some people loved the "no fun all work" approach.

You know what you get with realism?

A Betrayal of Krondor save file where you royally fuck yourself by saving the game when your characters are all starving with no rations with no town in sight. I go five steps and I die. Fuck.

P.S. I love Betrayal at Krondor.

Realism does not always make good gameplay.

Here's an interesting tidbit.

Good for him. Games are better off being fun to play and stylish in appearance than realistic in every aspect.

operation flash point would have been cool (to me) if the team AI wasn't so fucked, I spent so much time chasing my own team trying to heal them, while they were running away from me! get back here you moron!

The feel and look wasn't to real to me especailly the aiming/shooting, even though I try to keep graphic complaints to a minimum, that was part of the problem.

btw watching the rocket launcher animation cracked me up it took so long ha! like you wouldn't keep it loaded...ever?? is that real?? I figure you can load it and carry it around. I guess not.

Unfortunately copying aspects of more popular things to become more popular is just something you get used to. Whether it's games trying to out realism the rest or musicians trying to out GaGa each other. It still frustrates me when people put random parts from better games into their games that just make them worse. After all if I wanted to play Modern Warfare or God of War I would play those games not some crappy rip off.

Glad to see some developers have the right idea. If having a gun that shoots exploding chainsaws made the game insanely fun, why the hell would we try to restrict that fun with realism? I don't mind realism, but yeah, if it hurts a game, f*ck it. It's this ideology of fun>realism that's making Brink one of my most anticipated FPS's of the year.

Looks like I'm a tad outnumbered, but oh well. Honestly, for me, the more realistic, the better. I enjoy the learning and discipline that it generally requires to be successful in these sorts of games. But really, this has less to do with whether it's a "good game" or not and more about preference and execution on the developer's part. You make a shit game that's realistic as possible, it's still a shit game, but whether or not it's realistic or not has nothing to do with that. Realistic or not, on whatever area of the scale a game is on, it all comes down to design decisions that make a game fun. Could have the most realistic game in the world, and it also be one of the funnest. It's just not mutually exclusive.
