Bobby Kotick not a fan of Xbox Live photo

Evil Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has claimed that he is frustrated by the current online business model put out by Microsoft. Of course, it's not concern for consumers or the simple fact that Xbox Live is a massive con that has upset the flame-haired demon, it's classic greed. He's just annoyed that Microsoft benefits more from Xbox Live than publishers like Activision.

“We’ve heard that 60% of subscribers are principally on Live because of Call Of Duty,” Kotick said. “We don’t really participate financially in that income stream. We would really like to be able to provide much more value to those millions of players playing on Live, but it’s not our network.”

“We have always been platform agnostic. [Consoles] do a very good job of supporting the gamer. If we are going to broaden our audiences, we are going to need to have other devices."

Kotick actually raises an interesting point, that Microsoft is able to benefit from any game you'd buy Xbox Live for, and the publisher of that game doesn't benefit outside of the initial sale. That said, however, this stuff never sounds good coming from an Activision executive, especially one who thinks fans are "clamoring" for a subscription-based Call of Duty. I'd rather have Microsoft nickel-and-diming us than Activision, if one company has to.

I'm not a Kotick basher, but it's simple to figure out his thinking. If online play on XBL was free, more people would be playing CoD on it and that would be a bigger audience for them to sell stuff like maps to.

If any other publisher said this I'd be more willing to say it was a valid claim. Activision on the other hand, instantly Malraux me not care.

@HEL105 Think the point went over your head.

Kotick just wants to slap ads on something and get a revenue stream going. I seriously doubt 60% of live players got Live solely for COD, I think he read something wrong or had something READ TO HIM wrong. Most likely the statistically data he's quoting is that 60% of Live players play COD, that hardly justifies him in attempting ANYTHING let alone benefit from a revenue scheme from MS for this. This is just one moment in history and to cement something new at this point in time would be dumber than shit on rice.

Also what the hell is he talking and smoking on about other devices? Leading into phone apps or what? The DLC is a good enough revenue stream as it is, one that Activision is not unknown of to milk.

The guys a fool whos only achievement is sitting on a publishing house and letting others run it, I've yet to hear the guy say anything intelligent.

think about it this way... if activision is making money off people playing on live, they could be providing even better services to their playerbase

then map packs might be free

fuck kotick, his greed is going to single-handedly destroy one of my favorite franchises with the dismantling of infinity ward...and then he has the gumption to talk about the level, equal distribution of monetary gains. Last time i checked, kotick didn't pay microsoft to build the 360, develop live, or issue refunds when consoles crashed. However, Microsoft has given Activision its most profitable platform to rake in this ego kotick has seemed to develop for himself. Scenario: Kotick makes money off other peoples' hard work while he sits up on his mountain bitching about not making enough money off said people...and then sues when said slave labor decides they've had enough.

fuck. that. dude.

Activision getting into the Console War confirmed!

Think about it, Call of Shitty and World of Warcraft as ActiBox's exclusives? That's at least 20 Million sold right there(rough estimate of WoW+CoD userbase).

well hes more than welcome to risk billions on r&d, manufacturing and branding on an activision console if he wants to if he wants. Youd probably need to insert your credit card to switch it on though. Im sure microsoft execs are currently laughing at this little shit. This almost beats his threat to pull ps3 support as the most hollow impotent statement ever

@Buga If they charge players in another way, the map packs might be free. Did you put thought into that? He's talking about the live subscription fee, basically your saying MS should lower their quality, servers, customer service, so that you can get some map packs. Sounds awesome.

well because of XBL charging, I don't think other companies are willing to charge more for their game's online play. We'll keep it free to play their actual games, but the service may or may not be free to play (lol console fanboys)

He does have a point, especially on the heels of Valve's comments regarding Steam on consoles. It's a proprietary system that leaves little room for benefit or creative freedom for third parties, which in turn limits the options of the people on the network. It looked like a great idea at first, and I'm sure it made gobs of money, but it really stifles possibilities in the long-run.

map packs will never be free on consoles, the only reason they've been like that for the PC was due to people hosting their own servers, etc. Now that Steam has fucked that up, EVERY ONE will pay for DLC. That was the goal the entire time. Free?! lol.

No, that didn't go over my head. I wasn't defending or supporting what he said, I was just pointing out that free XBL would increase the audience that Activision could sell maps and such to. I wasn't commenting on ads or any supposed service he might want to run. Don't hit me because I didn't call him an ass or anything :-)

Your right that Microsoft is bigger. But there are millions of XBL users who only pay for gold to play CoD: MW2. As much as I dislike the game now, it is definitely pulling in a lot revenue for Microsoft.

Either way though, MS would survive without it.

that's not actually true...ask any Chromehounds players if Microsoft is still maintaining those servers. In fact, Microsoft never did host the servers as it was just Sega paying out for it. That's also why EA shut down a lot of games on their servers.

I think a lot of people are missing the point. The problem that developers are having is that XBL is a closed system. They can't reach customers directly, which cuts down on what they can offer in terms of services. Live wants to be Steam, except that it sucks. If Microsoft doesn't let go of their stranglehold, then it's the consumers who are going to miss out on opportunities, like they are with Portal 2. This is also why getting an MMO going on Xbox has been an uphill struggle.

Why stop at XBL Live fees? Why not have ISP's share their revenue with game publishers? Then the power companies should share their revenue with Activision too because, after all, the Xbox won't work without power. You can see where I am going with this.

I'm sure that he would like a business model that poured a steady stream of cash into Activision's coffers simply for playing but they can always make and sell DLC, which has been very profitable for them. But to say that it's not fair that the publisher doesn't benefit financially after the initial sale is ridiculous. Activision sells you the equipment but the platforms provide the playground. I don't send K2 a check every time I go skiing just because I bought their skis.

You want to know why you're not getting more money? Okay Bobby I'll explain it like this: You buy a microwave.

You do not require to pay whichever microwave brand you got said microwave from for it to work even though they made it and it is their product. You do however need to pay your electricity bills because your microwave will not work without any fucking electricity.

Unless your microwaves are suddenly fitted with transmitters that stop it from working without that payment you're not going to give them any money. Why not patc- put them in you ask? Well Bobby because it's a teribble idea. n
No one is dumb enough to buy microwaves they need to pay for every time they want to reheat some shit when they can go get a normal one like everyone else.

Especially when yo- they just fired and sued the people that design their best microwaves because they asked for their fucking paycheck. You dick.

@NoGod

People are way too hateful towards Kotick. He's just a business man, and video games are an industry like anything else. I think what he's saying, perhaps not so artfully, is that Activision devotes resources based on profits (like any good business) so when microsoft is making all the Xbox live money from their game, and they aren't seeing the profits from that platform, they can't devote as many resources to it. Where as if every MW2 player was giving activision 2 dollars a month, they'd be able to pay a team to work on making the online experience even better, with maps, or weekly tweaks like valve's mutations. If they can't pay a team to do this, they can't do it. Activision is not like valve in that most of valve's revenue stream probably comes from their distribution system (steam) and not from their games. i.e. valve can afford to do whatever they want when it comes to games and activision can only convince its shareholders to devote resources based on what brings in profits. That's why a subscription call of duty would be a higher value, b/c they could afford to devote more real time resources to it.

@framesbond Ya you can just say something is plain this or that. Like war, why not just nuke a country at will when they start a war, like Iraq or Afghanistan casualties are just a part of war right? Meat Packing company, why not pay everyone $2.12 an hour and hire children to play with sharp objects, it's just a business. Why not sell cocaine in vending machines? There's a consumer out there, and were just selling to them right, no big deal, it's just a business.

It's called Ethics, look it up.

"We would really like to be able to provide much more value to those millions of players playing on Live, but it’s not our network.” ...Kodick said

Well how about fixing the busted ass game that is MW2. This has to be the worst case I have seen ever in lack of support (from the top down) to improve upon/fix/patch one of the biggest titles to ever launch. You would think by that statement from Kodick that Activision was actively trying to fix it's game to improve it's "value". puh

As soon as we get another descent shooter, COD is dead.

@lAboMbA L4D2 (Steam) last campaign update was free, there are free things on PS3 all the time usually Resistance or one of the other main software lines on PS3, UT3 is an example of unlimited user created content. Co-op stuff for Read Dead Redemption. They might not be free on Live! because it's a requirement by MS that everything have a fee, because they don't want to create an environment where some companies are giving away things for free and others are not, because then people will question why they are even being charged and a thinking person is dangerous. If free became the norm then people would question every purchase, right now on console everyone just expects a fee. Hell the first company to list something for free on Xbox360 had to fight to do it, and I think that was Valve or Epic.
