Bob Hoskins on Super Mario Bros movie: 'The whole experience was a nightmare.' photo

In an interview with the Guardian Unlimited, legendary actor Bob Hoskins talks about his life, career, curses like a sailor and more importantly to us, talks about the worst movie he ever did:

He accepts there have been flops, and films he's detested, but that's the nature of the game. "The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Brothers. It was a f*ckin' nightmare. The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent. After so many weeks their own agent told them to get off the set! F*ckin' nightmare. F*ckin' idiots."

Wow, a movie director butchering a videogame franchise, that's a shocker. I've only seen it a couple of times when I was really young so I can't exactly remember how horrible the movie really was. Plus, after reading Reverend Anthony's legendary article, Why the Super Mario movie is an under appreciated masterpiece, I don't think I can ever hate this movie.

We still love you, Bob.

They really should make another though. Who wouldn't go see it?

I wonder if he ever fucked Jessica Rabbit. I mean granted she's a cartoon character and technically not real, but there have been falsified romances from actors and actresses in movies before.

It was truly heartbreaking in the movie when Yoshi ended up looking like a real baby dinosaur (not cute and kawaii, like I like it dammit.) but I think the part that killed me was when the little bobomb had a sponsored Reebok logo on the bottom of its foot. Does anyone else remember that?

I barely remember that movie. Not sure if I was half paying attention, or if it sucked so bad that my memory wiped it. Could go either way.

That's one sexy picture of Bob. If I were forced to do him at gun point, let's just say you wouldn't hear many complaints.

After reading this I had to go back and re-read the "why super mario bros. is the best," No shit I wanted a bob-omb. To have all that destruction in the palm of an 7th grader leads to me ruling a small European country.

As said, it definitely fit the "so bad it's good" role. For the guns they used, they were Super Scope 6's, painted silver. I mean, really.

Yeah, the SMB movie falls into the "so horrible it's hilarious" pile. (I won't say "so bad it's good" because it wasn't good by any definition of the word, but it was quite hilarious.) Street Fighter is the same way.

Unlike any given Uwe Boll movie, which is simply "so horrible" without the "it's hilarious" part.

I like Bob Hoskins because he is an excellent actor. I haven't watch the SMB movie in a long time. I should probably rent it and watch it again.

Haha that picture reminds me of that shower scene in "The Long Good friday." How long was that scene? It broke the mood so much it was funny.

The movie wasn't amazingly bad. It was just bad. Used to like it as a kid though.

It wasn't that bad of a movie. I'm obligated to say that because it was filmed where I live. But it really wasn't that bad.

But my friend says he's got an original script lying around somewhere that says it could have been alot better. I have not read it, but I heard this movie was hell to work on and that they kept rewriting the script every day.

Still, it wasn't THAT bad of a movie, but it definitely wasn't an amazing one either.

I actually liked that movie. I dunno which part of that is nostalgia talking and which is actual 'I liked the movie', and, granted, I haven't watched it since about 1993, but I have fond memories of that film. I should watch it again and see if I hate it now. I worked at Blockbuster, a little while back, and once I told some of my coworkers there that I liked SMB, they stopped letting me give movie suggestions.
