Well, looks like the rumor has finally been confirmed. For all of you who have been chomping at the bit to get a new Xbox 360, but were just a few dollars short, Microsoft is dropping the price on the 360 Pro (20 GB) by $50 on Sunday the 13th in most major retailers. Now at $299, the console will be within arm's reach of the Wii's $250 price point.
Here's the tell-tale proof in the gallery. If you can't read it, it's essentially saying the price drop is coming on the 13th, and they cannot sell the system for less until that date. Also, be prepared for plenty of promotions, including shelf signs and window displays advertising it.
This is only the continuation of a huge push this summer to get the 360 into everyone's hands. I've already been bombarded with three or four national TV campaigns where the main prize is an Xbox 360 -- Domino's Pizza is the first one that comes to mind.
So now that the 20 GB model is this low, how many of you are going out to get this? I've yet to get one myself, and this $300 price point is rather tempting. But I must resist! I need to actually have money for the summer!
There is no way the 360 will ever be cheaper than the Wii, nor should it. They bill it as a high-end piece of videogaming hardware; how would it look if it were cheaper than the console aimed at 'innovative fun for the lowest price'?
That's technology for you. It happens all the time.
I'm still waiting for the hardware problems to be completely fixed. The price drop is pretty tempting though.
360 Arcade: 199 €
360 Pro: 250 €
360 Elite: 300 € ( not 100% sure about this last one though )
and the Wii is still at its original price of 250 € so in Europe the cheapest current gen console that you can get is actually the 360 :-)
If the Pro drops, the others will, too. If that happens, the Arcade will drop to either $249 or $229, so you'll be eating those words in 3... 2...
$199 is that customary pricepoint that analysts keep talking about. You are actually in the majority with that statement. Over 90% of the PS2s sold were at $199 or less. This is why Sony is in a rougher spot than people realize, because they will have a much tougher time dropping the PS3 price to $199 than MS or Ninty.

I plan on getting a 360 after the price drop, but I want to wait until after the Microsoft E3 presser just to make sure that they're not gonna pull a fast one on me. Chances are, they will, but if I keep waiting and waiting for a lower price and better features, the next Xbox will already be out.
fuck.
