Blurry photo journalism: Xbox 360 price drop confirmed photo
     Microsoft

Well, looks like the rumor has finally been confirmed. For all of you who have been chomping at the bit to get a new Xbox 360, but were just a few dollars short, Microsoft is dropping the price on the 360 Pro (20 GB) by $50 on Sunday the 13th in most major retailers. Now at $299, the console will be within arm's reach of the Wii's $250 price point.

Here's the tell-tale proof in the gallery. If you can't read it, it's essentially saying the price drop is coming on the 13th, and they cannot sell the system for less until that date. Also, be prepared for plenty of promotions, including shelf signs and window displays advertising it.

This is only the continuation of a huge push this summer to get the 360 into everyone's hands. I've already been bombarded with three or four national TV campaigns where the main prize is an Xbox 360 -- Domino's Pizza is the first one that comes to mind.

So now that the 20 GB model is this low, how many of you are going out to get this? I've yet to get one myself, and this $300 price point is rather tempting. But I must resist! I need to actually have money for the summer!

Is it just the Pro or are the other ones going down in price as well?

I don't think they're trying to compete with the Wii on price. They know that's silly -- a Wii is cheaper to make. Nintendo hasn't even had their first price drop (and why should they?).

There is no way the 360 will ever be cheaper than the Wii, nor should it. They bill it as a high-end piece of videogaming hardware; how would it look if it were cheaper than the console aimed at 'innovative fun for the lowest price'?

So I wonder if the rumor of them just being refurbished units is also true, in which case, I'd recommend people to be very careful what units they buy.

what about the rumor that the 20gb unit is being taken off the market in favor for a 60gb, but then the price is put back upto 350....talk about temporary price cut.

I paid 400 last April for my premium system. I love the console, but I feel somehow angry that others get the same thing cheaper. Not to mention they can clean up with some of the systems best games being less than thirty clams.

Glad it's just for the Pro. If the Elite dropped, I would probably be a little...meh. Regardless, it's good.

That's technology for you. It happens all the time.

I'm still waiting for the hardware problems to be completely fixed. The price drop is pretty tempting though.

Lovely, if only the elite will follow suit shortly.

If animal crossing wii E3 is a no-show, I'll be trading/selling my loaded up (with VC) Wii in to get a 2nd 360 .. no joke. My g/f plays my 360 way too much, and I can has one of my own.

I've recently sold most of my 360 and wii games to get a PS3, mostly to play MGS4. Most of the games I sold were good games, but I know I wouldn't play them again. I wish the price of the PS3 would go down. But that 80gb/with MGS4 PS3 bundle seems like a good deal, dont you think so?

Euhm this pricedrop has been in Europe for quite some time allready...

360 Arcade: 199 €
360 Pro: 250 €
360 Elite: 300 € ( not 100% sure about this last one though )

and the Wii is still at its original price of 250 € so in Europe the cheapest current gen console that you can get is actually the 360 :-)

@kielejocain

If the Pro drops, the others will, too. If that happens, the Arcade will drop to either $249 or $229, so you'll be eating those words in 3... 2...

@Novakaine,

$199 is that customary pricepoint that analysts keep talking about. You are actually in the majority with that statement. Over 90% of the PS2s sold were at $199 or less. This is why Sony is in a rougher spot than people realize, because they will have a much tougher time dropping the PS3 price to $199 than MS or Ninty.

So how about the elites price? Though I really just want a 60GB with built in WiFi and HDMI port, and a BD player would be very welcome. But WiFi is most important to me, or at least drop the WiFi adapter to $30-$50.

What do you need an XBox 360 for? Don't you still live with Necros? I know he's got one.

It still needs:
Built-in WiFi
HDMI
Blu-ray
bigger HDD
USB charged controllers

@Dexter345 That's only during the school year, and plus, he gets all antsy about unlocking any achievements on his console.

@Dan CiTi: Last time I checked the Pro and Elite both have HDMI now, and I thought the 360 controllers could be charged with USB. I don't have a 360 so I can't say for sure, so maybe somebody else can confirm this?

I plan on getting a 360 after the price drop, but I want to wait until after the Microsoft E3 presser just to make sure that they're not gonna pull a fast one on me. Chances are, they will, but if I keep waiting and waiting for a lower price and better features, the next Xbox will already be out.

FUCK! I just exchanged my dead 360 on Best Buy and only got 50 dollars back (i had paid 400 for it last summer...like 1 week before the price dropped -o- )Should've waited to get 100

fuck.

@BluFire, I think he's talking about not having to buy a play and charge kit so you don't have to buy AAs all the time. But yeah, all 360s have HDMI now. Either way, this change doesn't effect me.

It keeps tempting me, but these bricking stories really push me away. Fable 2 looks really awesome, but I just don't know if I want to buy into MS Xbox brand, then I'm screwed next gen wanting two consoles from the get go (not Nintendo, they lost a fanboy with the Wii over here...).
