We recently had a chance to play upcoming PS3, Xbox 360 and PC racer Blur split-screen multiplayer (more on that later today) and it was there that we had a chance to see what the game's really about: The power-ups. There's a lot of racers out there, so we appreciate that Bizarre Creations is trying to do something a bit different. What's different here is that the game revolves around these power-ups. Sure, good racing technique will get you far, but being a vindictive little sh*t with these devastating weapons will get you much father.

In the video, you'll see what each of the power-ups does. Most of them are for blowing your enemies off the road, like the Shunt projectile. Shock allows you to stun another racer and then do what you wish. You could drive on by, or fly on by with a Nitro, or better yet, blast them with a Shunt to add injury to insult. I think Barge looks to be the most useful. It pushes other cars out of the way with some unseen force, clearing up the track for you to blast by.

The end result is mayhem, with cars flying off the road everywhere, all around you. It's quite fun. Look forward to our preview of Blur's multiplayer action later today

So basically it's Mario Kart with real cars?

Nascar rumble did it 8 years ago and better. Can you shoot tornados? No? I rest my case.

I think they are feeling the crunch from split second. Would be nice if they pushed weapons and the such on the vehicles rather then coming out of no where.

@kauza: Yeah, actually. They've made the Mario Kart comparison numerous times.

So it's power-up racing that we all had back in the N64 days in an age where nobody really goes for that anymore.

This new game I've never played before is obviously worse than some old NASCAR game no one but me was ignorant enough to pay attention to.

As a hardcore sim racer, these types of games only encourage the activities that the racing community loathes.

I hate Blur already...

Damn, JDigital...
I like the occasional kart/crazy racer. What's wrong with that?
I like sims, but not just sims.
ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKE JOHNNY AN ELITIST.

Still looks like Mario Kart. I like Mario Kart but only when the racing aspect is more important than the combat aspect (so the SNES and DS versions). The more I hear about Blur, the more I just want to play Split/Second.

This could either work brilliantly like RC Revenge where the weapons are secondary to the racing or poorly and make the weapons rubber band the racers together throughout. What id give for an RC sequel.

yeah this is a total rip off of midnight clubs multiplayer. just in old fashion NFS single track racing. or is it open world racing?
if you can turn off the power ups and the racing is still good, then it might be worth buying.

mix of midnight club multiplayer and wipeout with weapons on.
but not as cool as either separately.

if you can turn off the power ups and the racing is still awesome (like wipeout) then it might be worth it.
but if the racing sucks by itself then its just trying to rely on the power up gimmick.

so its not open world racing? which i have been wanting lately. like old NFS(HP) those i miss..

this one can go either way.

Reminds me of lego racing, except this is real world. Not original or tweaked by any means.

I'm currently playing Midnight club LA (temporaryily no internet, needed racer or RPG to get me through) - and i was quite enjoying it until i got to the "Choose a special ability" bit.

Sonic wave that pushes cars out of the way? - Fuck off.

I hate it when a dev can't make an interesting exciting racer without throwing bullshit like that in there.

Give me cars, tracks/openworld, speed, and fun. Not silly fucking weapons and shit, save that for mariokart / modnation.
