If you've been curious about the Xbox 360's Japanese RPG Blue Dragon, then this video will no doubt shine some light into your darkened Western mind. Until it comes to the U.S. or you speak Japanese, this is pretty much as close you'll come to the game. After watching this, what do you think?
I'm no true RPG fan but I like them on a playing handheld, don't think this will do it for me. Not impressed with the monsters and the shadows. All looks a bit corny to me.
The only RPG that's coming out on a console soon and has my interest is Rogue Galaxy for the PS2, than again it's already out in Japan I believe and don't believe it was a big hit there. So in that sense MS might have done the right thing.
Christpunchermpls: I hope you were being facetious.
Anyway, after seeing that video, I'm less convinced about the game then I was before seeing it. I guess I'll have to wait and play to really make a judgement about it. It looks fun, but it doens't look ground breaking in anyway.
Its more than ground breaking dude.
Its a pedigreed game.
It's got a star packed design team. not just in one position, but all over the fucking place, story, music, ect..
If it turned the Japanese on to Xbox. 80,000 units in 4 days, some of those sales were bundles.
It's 3 disks long.
The battle interface while similar to traditional TBRPG's is far smoother and more in depth than anything I have seen before. It's got some quirky little extras that look intriguing to say that least.
Your not forced into battles when on the world screen, like so many TBRPG's you select when to fight and when not to.
It's eye candy to look at.
If this game doesn't get your attention, than your just plain hard to please as an RPG'er,
and if your not an RPG'er then the hell which cha..
respectivly of course.
To answer your question, Final Fantasy VII was 3 disks, Final Fantasy VIII was 4 disks, and I think Final Fantasy VIII was four disks too but I'm seriously trying to forget how bad that game was.
I guess the big thing to remember here tho is that Blue dragon doesn't use CG cutscenes; All the Final Fantasies past 7 used them and who knows how much disk space those took up. So I guess 3 disks IS kind of a big deal. I suppose?
I'm not all that interested in this game to be honest. There's a lot of solid stuff in that video, but nothing WOW about it. I'm not big on Akira Toriyama's art style in the first place, and honestly I thought the environments and enemies didn't look all that impressive. Again, it's probably the Toriyama art.
Who can really say about the story without playing it. The battle system is kind of neat, I guess, but nothing that makes my mouth water.
I guess the real question people need to ask themselves are 'if I own an Xbox 360 and like RPG's, should I play this game?' and I think the answer is unquestionably 'yes.' It might not be an overwhelming yes, but surely it's worth a shot.
This is my kind of game. I personally love the DBZ art style and the classic Dragon Quest RPG game play. This game will get me to upgrade to the next generation. That song had seriously better be changed before it's released stateside, though.
Honestly, the video didn't do it for me. I know heavy hitters like Umeatsu and Toriyama are involved, but I can't shake this feeling of mediocrity that I get when I watch the gaming footage.
Oh, whatever. It'll be a long time before I ever get any of the new-gen systems.

I'm liking that circle of influence mechanic, and the game overall looks really well done.
But good lord, what was up with that song at the end? "
agreed completely!!! i hope it comes out on the PS3 too!!! i really hope it does... then i won't feel bad about not owning a 360... :(
and dear christpunchermpls:
If this game was on a PS2 with PS2 graphics it would only need 1 disc... however, it's on a 360 which means it's in HD... HD takes up a lot more space than ED (excellent) or SD (standard), so it needs a lot more room. If you notice, a 720p 3 minute HD video is about 100 MB or so while the same thing in SD is about 10-15 MB (ok granted 420p is a bit more).. on the PS1 however, FFVII and FFVIII used up 3 discs (at least on the PC in addition to the install disc), and FFIX used up 4 discs. The reason for this is that a CD is 0.7 GB as opposed to the 4.9 of a DVD. does FFXII use a dual-layered DVD?
but you must realize, had this game come out on the PS3 it would have used only 1 disc (dual layerd BD-ROM = 50GB, dual-layerd DVD-ROM that 360 uses is about 9.7 GB? not sure exactly how much)... so the number of discs isn't really all that relevant...
@thisisami -- Blue Dragon doesn't use FMV sequences like Final Fantasy. The mere fact that you went into detail, with numbers and estimations without knowing that, boggles the imagination. Especially how at the end of your post you say "it isn't relevant" despite the effort you put into creating an argument in favor of Sony consoles, saying that if done on either PS2 or PS3, it would only require 1 disc, despite the huge tech gap between them.
lol
As for the music, it sounded just a bit like Ozzy Osbourne could sing that song. =D

Dragonball Z graphics aside, Damn, i cannot wait for this game to come to the states.
Well that's because the guy who designed this is Akira Toriyama, the guy who created Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball mangas, and designed Chrono Trigger as well as most of those Dragon Quest games. Probably my main reason for buying the game is his involvement coupled with that of Sakaguchi.
thisissami -- pre-rendered/pre-recorded video takes up more data then real time engines. So comparing HD games to HD video is just stupid on your part. PC gamers have been playing in "HD" for the last 2 years already yet where are the multiple DVD PC games? Where are the 20+ GB installs? HD video at 1080p is about 2.1 megapixels. 1920x1080 @ 20mbps (2.5MB per second) is 150MB per second or 13.18GB for a 90 minute movie.

I can't remember a 3 Disker..
Were any of the FF's 3?
can't remember one that was..

I've heard mention of it in forums, but I don't know for sure.
I like the design and the characters though! It's an astounding pedigree they have there :)

It's an exclusive title. Microsoft is the publisher after all.
