If there's one thing Sony knows how to do, it's a crazy advertising campaign. It's something of a shock then that the new campaign is actually quite tame in comparison to the insane war veterans, silly cartoons and deformed heads that we've seen in the past. As reported before, Sony is going back to its schizophrenic marketing by pushing the Blu-ray capabilities of the PS3 above its games, because it's not just high definition -- it's higher definition!
Marketing Manager for PlayStation 3 Kim Nguyen says that "the theme of this year’s campaign uses computer animation to model key PS3 iconography in a black onyx world." I've no idea what that babble means either, but it basically amounts to an animated banner that looks something like this.
When is Sony going to realise that real gamers just don't care about Blu-ray? Superior visuals have not been a deciding factor in the past several console wars. If they were, then the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 would never have been so successful. Gamers go where the games are, it's as simple as that. I don't know about any of you, but mention of the Blu-ray format just irritates me at this point.
Am I alone here, or has that banner been enough to sway some of you?
[Thanks Donut]

Now I want it.
Yeah. That'll make a lot of sense to the soccer moms.
"Black Onyx World" I think of the casing of teh BS3.
They've LOST their Never-Existant Advertising Skills. Just think teh game to push BS3's this "Holiday Season". Unreal Tournament 3 is now 2/1/08!
I sold minw allready,
Sticking with 360!
I'll stick with my HDDVD xD.
the competition, wi: next gen controller with a last gen console.
360: last gen dvd, next gen graphics, and current gen processing(ala duo core type stuff).
so the ps3 nailed next gen in all areas, no one else did. what makes them stand above the competition more than anything? BLUE RAY. and i love blue ray, didn't think i would, then i bought a trinitron xbr 34 inch wide screen crt. and watched monster house. WOW never seen anything like that before. it really did blow me away in 1080i.
So what do i do, i play a lot of 9 and 8 rated ign reviewed games, like warhawk, heavenly sword, skate, motostorm, resistance fall of man, graw 2, rainbow 6, flow, super stardust hd, and wait for unreal 3, haze, killzone, metal gear, grand theft auto, final fantasy, little big planet, home, rachet and clank, drake's uncharted, assasins creed, folklore, eye of judgment, call of duty 4.
well if i had a 360, i would wait for the same multi platform titles cept, i would have halo which is okay, gears, which is ok. but not much else, mass effect, bioshock? ok. but seriously. they got nothing on sony.
eye of judgement is kick ass and innovative. as is little big planet, also mgs4, haze, killzone, drake's, final fantasy, heavenly sword and warhawk in my honest opinion are way better exclusives than any of the microsoft stuff. oh well. its a taste thing. and i picked sony for the games, and blue ray.. don't regret it at all..
Paragraph of the day!
Mind you, have you even played the 360 games you've decided to judge?
Fanboys are funny.
then i get into these stupid arguments with the gamestop people about how they claim the ps3 is hard to code for, when its just something new and next gen. So they try to port their lame ass pc windows code to the ps3 and it chokes because its last gen bs, works on the 360 because it to is last gen processor tech and works great with that windows based code. but honestly the 360 hasn't shown us anything that a pc couldn't do.
ps3 has shown us things a pc could not do... 360 is nothing but a half glorified windows gaming platform. ps3 is truly next gen. and they are still learning how to program it..
oh yeah, and i can't wait for infamous by sucker punch as well, another great exclusive ps3 title..
I have a PC. Gears will hit on the PC in November, Mass Effect will be out on it probably within a year of release.
There is nothing really I can play on the Xbox I can't play on my PC. That's what the "Games For Windows" is really all about, the D3D10 feature carried by DX10 that allows porting from Xbox to PC. Xbox is needed by people who don't have good PC's/can't afford them.
Console wise, I'm all for the PS3, once they get the shit ROLLING already, IF they get it rolling (only because I can't play shit on it on the PC - if I could, it'd be worthless too). Until then, the console market is dead to me personally.
i mean honestly, the 360 is a pc, the ps3 is beyond what a pc is, blue ray, and cell. vs multicore power pc that is much like the duo core intels but way more stripped down. oh ahahah and out dated dvd. once blue ray discs drop in price to 19 bucks like they will for sure in a year or 2, no one will buy dvds anymore... just a matter of time. blue ray is an even bigger step from dvd, than dvd was from laser disc and vhs etc..
most people see hd on some crappy cheapo plasma or lcd. i love hd crt, especially the sony xbr crt. no other display touches this quality of picture and real colors and real black...
When you WATCH! the trailers for MAJOR & MOST "PS3 Exclusives"... They LOOK! like a higher cinematic production value. Even GRAW2 & DIRT, LOOK, better on teh BS3 than Original Platform...
They Also Play LIKE they're supposed too for teh BS3. ( Control Scheme ). Hence better overall feel.
The Only reason 360 Users are so hip on their software & hardware, they get so much HYPE!
Halo 3 & Gears sound like the second coming to teh end users! So they essentially learn to like it!
I bought the BS3 to see how much BIGGER & BANGIER the games were on Blu-Ray. Next-Gen Games... That's why PS3 Owners buy. 360 Users buy HYPE!
IMO
LOL, keep telling yourself that. I already sold my $600 movie player 5 months ago. As for PC ports, how many are on the PS3?
And like I said, have you PLAYED all those games you said were better exclusives? Like, the ones that aren't out yet?
Also Hexfix, you are idiotic.
sony has yet to fail, even the psp has done something in the hand held market no one could do before.
soon the ps3 will be a 400 dollar movie and hd next gen gaming player. in about 2 years a 299 player... then what. 360 2? cause everyone will want hd in 2 years.. because tv will finally be 80% hd by then...
i think the 360 will have the same life span as the average pc video card, 3 years, then it will fall off. ps3 will last 8.
Dude, PS3 is done allready!
Every system sucks when it launches, but no system has ever started off in last place to win the so-called "console wars." Not that it matters, though. The 360 has been providing games, the PS3 hasn't. It's that simple. I don't go where the systems are, I go where the games are.
SSBB & Galaxy will most likely be million dollar sellers within a month.
What game on the PS3 will sell that much?
By the time MGS & FF comes out there will be 10:1 AAA games ratio between 360/Wii to PS3.
Get it a rest
980,000 consoles sold in the first 48 hours? Yeah, what a terrible start.
But yeah the ps3 sux right now, and will do untill the games start coming, blu ray means cocks!
You are wrong. I'm a real gamer and I care about blu ray. I'm not just a gamer, I'm a videophile and a gadget geek. There are lots of other gamers like me who are "real" gamers and also care about blu ray.
thank you
YOU HAVE THE GIFT SIR!!! YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE TO BRING ALL CONSOLES TOGETHER!! YOU HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE! The Alliance has been assembled as you have requested your majesty. Truly your insight and wisdom supercede all of us unworthy infidels.
"Lord Hexfix, will you tell us the grand tale of how you rescued the kingdom of Consolia!? Tell us of your grand Blu ray that slew the Gates dragon!!"
"Yes Lord hexfix please!"
"LONG LIVE THE BLUEST RAY OF THEM ALL!"
that was some funny shit!
You mean the phantom console?
As for gaming, it will remain mostly underutilized for years to come, id be willing to bet. The simple reasoning is, that the 360 has a massive install base, compared to the modest numbers of the ps3. Hence, most developers want to make their games for the 360 as well, and thus the ps3 will be limited to having some higher res textures, or more of them, or whatever. No new content, or amazingness or anything. Of course, it has its exclusives... which its losing left right and center. I doubt that having a blue ray player will be important for at least another 2 or 3 years, if ever.
nah not that this was in the golden age of video games, before the PC was a mainstream and amiga ruled the land!
"yes there are good games on the 360, good windows type pc games that i would of bought for my pc if i hadnt jumped onto the mac for a safer virus free spyware free, secure unix based os that is more stable for music production that i do."
As a mac user, I am now shamed to have you speaking about what I use. And stable for music production? YOU produce MUSIC? Oh Jesus.
But I must admit that seeing into the future is a kick ass gift! So how will China fall? Will the United States of Iraqica kick China's
communist ass?
What are you doing on here then? I’m no nerd and yet I enjoy playing video games, stop categorizing people you twat!
It is by no means the selling point for a console if they are only using it to publish shitty content.
I am looking forward to several games now though so hopefully this investment was worth it. :)
Oh and the PS3 is not going anywhere. 3D0, Gamecube, neither one of those had the brand recognition or third party support that the PS3 has. I know by now it's cliche to say but MGS4 and FFXIII and FFXIII Versus alone will move units in massive numbers.

Look, I care about Blu-ray like a father for his child (well, okay, maybe not quite in that way). It was one of the reasons I bought a PS3 — in fact, I own several Blu-ray titles (including 300, Planet Earth, and seasons 1 and 2 of Weeds), and they all look fantastic on my HDTV, even though it’s only a 26" LCD (I can only imagine how they look on a 50" 1080p plasma or something). And while it makes perfect business sense for Sony to promote all of the features that its console possesses, including its high-def capabilities, they have to be very careful about how they do it. They should only market the Blu-ray feature set in specific spots that are tailored for video enthusiasts — like at Best Buy’s Magnolia Home Theater or something. I mean, the PS3 is the cheapest Blu-ray player around, especially now that the $400 40 GB model has been confirmed, and that’s important to videophiles. But they need to focus on the games. That’s what it’s all about.
@qwerty: No, Sony could definitely not afford to buy Microsoft twice — probably not even once.
When is Sony going to realise that real gamers just don't care about Blu-ray?
I have to take issue with this. As evinced by glitched, among others, it’s not fair to make blanket statements like that (in fact, it’s irresponsible to do so as a journalist, no matter how much any mention of Blu-ray may irritate you). As I said earlier, I’m a gamer — I consider myself a pretty hardcore gamer, actually — and Blu-ray was a difference-maker in my decision to purchase a PS3. Obviously, that wasn’t only because of the movies and such available on Blu-ray — as Taicho mentioned, Sony was thinking ahead when they decided to make Blu-ray the centerpiece of their console because of its storage capacity for games. I’ve read that a single level in Killzone 2 takes up around 2 GB of data — last time I checked, that was over a fifth of a dual-layer DVD-ROM, which is, of course, the storage format for the Xbox 360 and the Wii. Though Blu-ray’s immense storage capacity advantage hasn’t reared its head in a big way as of yet (except for a few instances here and there), it seems obvious that it’s only a matter of time before we start to see that happening. And real gamers do care about that.
