Blu-ray is a rotten format - literally! photo

Just when things couldn't get worse for Sony, it looks like karma has yet another surprise in store. According to several members of the AVS Forums, Blu-ray copies of The Prestige are starting to rot like old Star Wars toys. Identifiable by little spots underneath the surface of the disc, the mould renders an unlucky copy unplayable in a manner similar to the rot that has befallen certain Laserdiscs, CDs and DVDs in the past.

Reports of the rot are, thus far, isolated in one forum thread and seem to only be of real concern to those who bought The Prestige. That said, news about BDs rotting so soon after purchase is likely to be the last thing Sony needs right now, with all the bad press it seems to be attracting like priests to a daycare center. Whatever you do, make sure your games don't get wet and never feed them after midnight. Wait, that's mogwais. Either way, if I were Kaz Hirai, I'd seriously be wondering if God saw me drowning those puppies, because this is luck that can only be described as ... rotten. Ha ha, I slay me.

It's funny how you only get this kind of backlash from Sony fans, really. I guess the fans of the other companies have nothing to feel so insecure about?

The post was light hearted, bitches. Settle down, settle down.

@tehuberone, so what reason is Sony giving you to bash them at the moment. I can understand people wanting to bash them in the past, but at this moment, what is it that you feel they've done to deserve your ire? For example is the shiny coating on PS3 made from ground baby bones or something?

Sony has some loyal troops, who glady put their lives on the line to defend its honor. Where is the Sony Defense Group? *Snicker*

I manage a game store and I'll say this about blu-ray discs: They never come in (as a trade-in) scratched. One of the less lauded aspects of the format is the new plastic they use. I won't say it's scratch-proof, but I will say that while I have to buff discs from every other format, PS3 games are always pristine.

Who the fuck are you again? I'm kidding. I thought your post was very ... punny ;)

@Gameboi

I think they are called the Sony Defense Force (SDF).

Huh, learn something new every day. However, this is attributed to cases that fail, and delamination isn't the same as blackspotting.

@TheStripe

I just googled DVD Rot. Picked one and pasted it. If you read the article more closely, you'd see it talks about delamination AND DvdRot. Either way, it isn't only a Blu-ray dealy, it happens to DVDs and has happened to CDs. Usually the case of a bad manufacturing batch than the technology in itself.

I don't know too much about it tho, past that article and a quick wiki lookup. You could probably find out much more about Dvd Rot if you did some research yourself.

My copy is fine, looks like some assholes don't know how to take care of their disks and some assholes don't know how to write anything nice.

I nearly crapped myself when I saw the title of the article. I was like WTF is organic in optical media? After reading all the comments it now makes a whole lot more sense.

Sounds more like poor quality control and someone getting lazy and not switching out some chemicals at the production plant.

This week, Blu-Ray discs rotting... next week a PS3 overheats in Australia and the entire continent disappears in a mushroom cloud.

@Aex - I'm sorry, but it's still a moot point. It doesn't actually matter that this has happened to DVD's or CD's or Laserdiscs before. It also doesn't matter that this is a manufacturing defect. What DOES matter is that it happened to blu-ray, and that Sony is going to be catching hell about it. This America: The land of big cars, slimy lawyers, and the kick-em-when-they're-down mentality. You should be one of the first to see that, through your Sony-colored glasses, even here on d-toid. When Sony is failing, people/press will lash out. I hardly describe this article as said lashing out, given that D-toid's audience is relatively small compared to, oh, say CNN. If the advisors in mainstream tech media get ahold of this info, even though it's so far been isolated to one title, they're going to rip Sony up. What this is going to take for Sony to come out less scathed is a corporate, no-questions-asked replacement. They don't have the capital or the loyalty of PS2 customers to ignore it and deal with the pissed off customers on a case-by-case basis. If this spreads wide enough and Sony does nothing, it's going to bite them in the ass, which they surely don't need. It's not just gamers attacking blu-ray, it's mediaphiles too, because they don't trust Sony with new media types. Blu-Ray looks good on paper, but in-the-wild malfunctions, failures, and manufacturing defects are going to set sony and blu-ray back for the non-gaming home consumer. Yeah, it happened to CD's and DVD's, and Laserdiscs. Which ones of those medias had actual competition for formats? CD? Nope. DVD? Nope. Laserdisc? Not really, unless you count DVDs, and by then Laserdisc was dead. In a vacuum, it's easy to compare established format failures with the Blu-Rot, but that comparison goes out the window when there's a competitor that's not having the same issues.
