Blu-ray is a rotten format - literally! photo

Just when things couldn't get worse for Sony, it looks like karma has yet another surprise in store. According to several members of the AVS Forums, Blu-ray copies of The Prestige are starting to rot like old Star Wars toys. Identifiable by little spots underneath the surface of the disc, the mould renders an unlucky copy unplayable in a manner similar to the rot that has befallen certain Laserdiscs, CDs and DVDs in the past.

Reports of the rot are, thus far, isolated in one forum thread and seem to only be of real concern to those who bought The Prestige. That said, news about BDs rotting so soon after purchase is likely to be the last thing Sony needs right now, with all the bad press it seems to be attracting like priests to a daycare center. Whatever you do, make sure your games don't get wet and never feed them after midnight. Wait, that's mogwais. Either way, if I were Kaz Hirai, I'd seriously be wondering if God saw me drowning those puppies, because this is luck that can only be described as ... rotten. Ha ha, I slay me.

Blu-Ray discs can rot? I had no idea...

Sony can talk around the early lack of games, they can talk around the price, but how do you talk around the fact that your Blu-Ray discs start to "rot?"

It's probably just the shitty media used to create the discs, but yea... this can't be good for Sony.

My copy is fine....

Either it's a small run of the discs having a defect, or a viral campaign by the HDDVD group who knows their format is failing.

It's not that big of a deal for Sony.

Lawl is exactly right, its an isolated incident and is being blown into proportion by fanboys of HD-DVD. This is not rot, it is a manufacturing defect called "blackspots". It happens when lazy ass machine operators don't change the required resin properly, the resin gets burned and causes spots on the surface and sometimes inside the disc. You cannot clean it because the spot has been burned. It happens often and usually the discs get rejected. In this case someone did not do their job in the manufacturing process properly. This is not rot, so stop spreading lies.

To clarify my comment above, I don't think the Blu-Ray format has anything to do with it, just that some of the discs the movie were burned on were cheap/faulty.

Defects can happen in any format when you use cheap ass media.

you guys understand that this is a tiny tiny TINY problem that only affects 2% of people of who own BRD. this is grasping for straws if you ask me.

Even the smallest problems can be used against Sony, seeing how it's cool to hate on Sony now. But I guess I'm glad that it's not even a problem so they don't have to worry about fixing defective Blu-Ray discs and can focus on a price drop.

But it's Sony! It's obviously all part of their devious plan to sell more Blu-Ray copies. And then Capcom will sue them for defective products followed by Capcom moving all of their titles to Nintendo... again.

It's all part of Sony's NWO conspiracy. INVESTIGATE BLU-RAY!

Ok so that's like what .0000000001% of all BR discs? And this led to the title blu-ray is rotten.

Man the balance in this site went to absolute shit when Summa left.

It's not the one headline. It's the constant Sony bashing that's getting fucking old. Whether it is true, false, deserved or not deserved Sony will get shit on. And people are getting sick of it. Don't they give you enough REAL reasons to bash on them?

Since you've been scanning forums to look for any negative sony posts to blow up into stories I'll give you some help by giving you something REAL.

http://www.elpasotimes.com/entertainment/ci_6164939

It has to do with Blockbuster's choice of support for HD video format. See something like this actually has value and can affect people's decisions. Not like this BS post.

The best part about your comment is that I'm probably one of the nicest writers toward Sony on the site, and didn't even bash Sony in the article. Funny what you think you read when you have your defensive goggles on. Then of course, there are your claims that the post doesn't have value while still contributing to the discussion it has started.

Continue to dance, puppet.

Even if you are the nicest writer to Sony here, it gets kind of old constantly hearing false presumptions and constant mockery and bashing of Sony with any and everything that goes wrong. It seems that most gaming blogs ARE biased against Sony though so it's nothing I havent seen before(Joystiq is MUCH worse and probably get paid by the big M$). I do enjoy Dtoids mockery and wouldnt want you to stray from it but spread the love. I'm beginning to doubt the integrity of popular gaming sites seeing that M$ would pay 50 million for downloadable content alone!

its just a fucking funny article. Does it really hurt your feelings to barely poke fun at sony? As far as I can tell, dtoid is an equal opportunity mock-fest, and is pretty fair in what they decide to poop on. Just cause I'm really happy with the 360 doesnt mean i'm going to get my ire up cuz they posted a song about the red ring of death, and thats a much worse, factual problem. Its not like everything has to be about choosing goddamned sides, its so fucking immature. HD-DVD rules, by the way.

If Sony stops giving the people a reason to bash them, then perhaps it might stop.

Until then I got my bashing stick.

On a side note, if you want dtoid to start bashing M$ or Nintendo send some reason for the bashing to tips@destructoid.com and I'm sure you'll get your fill.

Also I never actually to the time to find out but is the bashing mostly Sony 'cause I don't pay attention.

Does anyone keep track of sales of blu-ray players vs hddvd players, the way that NPD does with game consoles? I'd like to see which is selling best. (And don't just say it blu-ray b/c of PS3, I remember reading somewhere that only 10-15% of X360 and PS3 gamers play on HiDef screens - so most PS3 users probably don't buy blu-ray movies just yet).

If you were a PS2 fanboy who ripped the original Xbox and its fans apart and you are a PS3 fan, you now know how it feels. This is to be expected. While I don't necessarily agree with constant bashing, you simply can't deny that Sony brought most of this on themselves.

I have to agree with you, Buck, on that point. I fucking loved the PSone and the PS2, and xbox was a fucking awesome improvement. I loved it, but people would still refuse to play it because it was apparently like cheating on sony. Which is wierd, cuz as far as i can tell, thats a one way relationship. although with the 360, Live is really an awesome thing. Except for denying free content.

This is what happens when dreams are smashed and the neighborhood kids no longer respect the $600 trophy.

To all who are like "it's just a manufacturing defect," It is. But does sony need anymore bad press? Especially since their thoroughbred game machine basically does nothing but play resistance, motorstorm and Blu-Ray, and now that Blu-Ray functionality, (and integrity of the media,) is coming into question. All I can say is that I've never ever purchased nor heard stories of blackspotted DVD's getting into wide enough circulation for there to be any cause for refunds or exchanges beyond the retail level. While this article fails to explore the fallout from this particular event, if it's something on the scale of which that requires an official response from Sony, it's certainly not good news. It's unfortunate that anytime something negative comes out about the PS3 that all who are disillusioned with their state-of-the-art game console come out to call the reporting agency (and all the "PS3, more like BS3" commentary) haters, then go over to a new post about a Wii or 360 game, not even a "this game sucks" post, but merely a "check out this game [that isn't available on your $600 box]" post, and comment how much that game or it's supported console sucks. When Wiimotes are causing millions of cases of tenis elbow, you're more than welcome to come make fun. But when those of us that do enjoy nintendo's little white box really fucking hate it when you trolls come lurking in posts completely unrelated to your console. Maybe it's a little backlash, maybe not, but some of you slimy fuckers certainly deserve a little shit.
