Blu-ray discs are about to get even bigger photo

As if Blu-ray discs weren't big enough, a new report has revealed that they're about to get even bigger. Thanks to new production methods, the old per-layer storage capacity for BDs has been increased to 33.4 GB.

"Read and write at 33.4 GB per layer would be implemented thanks to the use of partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) signal processing," writes Nikkei, using words I don't understand. "The new method can continue to use the existing Blu-ray optics: a blue-violet laser diode with a 405 nm wavelength, and an object lens with a numeric aperture (NA) of 0.85."

The important part is that Sony is a huge supporter of the new discs, so it would appear that PS3 developers have even more disc space to feel with uncompressed madness. Final Fantasy can have even more graphics, and Metal Gear Solid can finally realize its dream of the ultimate six-hour cutscene.

Good times are ahead, my friends! Good times indeed.

From 25 to 33.4 GB per Layer, Even Larger Blu-ray Discs on the Horizon [Nikkei]

Because what? 50gb across two layers (with no delay between layers and position on the disk like DVDs had) just isn't enough?!?

Is there any doubt that the next Microsoft console will use Blu-ray?

They didn't need to be bigger, the only reason that MGS and other AAA games claim to be using up all of the space is because they weren't using tricks to cut-corners, likely so they could come out at the right time.

Also timtheterrible you have just made me LOL

How many games could even TOUCH the limit in the first place? If I don't see a game which is TWO actual human lives rolled into a disc, I call Blu-Ray a shiny disappointment.

Oh boy, still riding that train.

Yes, games do look a bit better when optimised on the ps3. But the majority of the space is taken up by uncompressed audio. not graphics.

That still doesn't explain why an entire season of South Park can't fit onto a single Blu Ray. Or even the entire Full Metal Panic (13 episodes), which occupies 2, with no special features to speak of.

If I remember correctly, most blu-ray players including the PS3 can't read BD discs of higher capacity than 50GB. If that is the case, and unless this new tech can be implemented with a firmware update, this doesn't concern gamers at all. At least not in this generation.

Also, @ JustLikeBuck: Kojima said that MGS4 needed to have parts of it compressed, as 50GB was not enough space.

Sorry for double post, needed to find that story :)

Maybe they put them in multiple discs to justify the price of those complete season box sets. Also, Tessa is definitely hotter than Chidori.

If the general read time improved, this is a welcome story. If it doesn't address the current read speed. I will just wait for next storage innovations.

The best thing about blu-ray is that it meant you could take apart broken PS3's and turn their disc-reading laser into a bright fuckin' purple burny laser pointer of death.

@sprldr: I believe spamming like you do on everyone of Jim Sterling's articles is a bannable offense.

If the PS3 won't even be able to read the new discs, I'd like to see SonyDefenseForce use this as some kind of pro-ps3 thing.

the hardware is exactly the same. the only thing that's changing is the way that the data is being read. to quote joystiq (and i feel sad quoting them): "According to Nikkei Electronics, i-MLSE is a processor-intensive method that will allow players to properly calculate the read-error rate, a stumbling block that prevented larger capacity discs." this means that a firmware update is all that should be needed to allow for more space to be used on the discs.

You clearly dislike Sony, so why does Destructoid let you report on PS3 related news? It'd be nice to read an article about a system I own without your anti-PS3 bullshit thrown into it.

Agreed Necron117.

SixthHero needs to quit QQing about unrelated bullshit.

Seriously, more space is great. It used to be that we didn't have enough and now we have more than we can do with which is the way it should be. Advancements in technology that relate to video games news belongs here, not people's negative comments towards Jim and/or this article because the can't comprehend the long term usage.

Biased journalism is biased.

This has become the FoxNews of videogame journalism with all the tounge in cheek (and also blatant Sony) bashing.

You know the games and tech on the PS3 are way fudging better than the xbox so you prefer to look like a moron and try to bash it? Jim, report the news when it's news time, and write a column I can skip when it's time to write an opinion piece. Go to journalism 101 or create an xbox website schmuck.

Time to rss joystiq again.

How is this biased and why are you angry? Putting an opinion at the end of the story doesnt change the quality of a story. It would be biased if after the header it said, "and a great deal of good it will do for this hobnobbery of a system the PS3 is," but alas it does not.

What's with all this "Jim hates the PS3" crap coming from? I read nothing in that article that was even remotely negative about the PS3. If its the 6 hour cutscene comment then seriously, you PS3 fanboys are pathetic little shits that need to get something in your life to actually care about. Get a puppy, or a girlfriend. @Xzyliac: Agreed. I don't see where Jim bashes either Sony or the PS3 in this article. He pokes a little fun at MGS4's super long movie sequences, but it wasn't malicious, and even the most hardcore of Sony fanboys have to admit that you could eat a whole bag of popcorn during some of those cutscenes.
