Whoa, that Fragshark Splitfish is actually kind of interesting. I've wished at times I could use controller/mouse instead of keyboard/mouse, since that way you can get analog control for movement. I assume the "mouse" actually just emulates the right analog stick. And $88 isn't too bad for such a specialized piece of equipment, assuming it works well.
I'm way more hardcore than them. I ducktape all my console together into a single super gaming machine. What are you gonna do when I go tearing through the space time continuum on my PSWii360PC strapped to a a Saturn V rocket? Nothing. That's what. I seriously doubt anyone would need a 105mb connection to play COD, especially since its gonna lag no matter what you do. I also doubt anyone needs a $4000 TV, or a $3000 PC, or 95% of anything else mentioned in the article. Its like saying the real cost of eating food means you have to buy an entire restaurant or hiring a world class chef full-time in case you get hungry.

I have spent more than 17k on games overall....over my entire life. Never in a year, that's just stupid.
You know I play alot of fucking games and last year I bought a brand new top of the line PC and somewhere between 40 and 50 games and I'd be surprised if I spent 2 to 3 grand, and I consider myself someone who definitely spends too much on games.

Bloomberg is stupid but I do agree with the fact that being a video gamer puts a sizable dent in your wallet. We buy consoles, accessories, games, junk food, monthly online fees, high speed internet, collectibles, special editions, Thinkgeek.com
17K over my entire lifetime? Sure. Perhaps. Kinda doubtful. Though in the past, oh 5 years? I would say max 6K-8K. Mind you this is building two new computers, PS3, and a crap ton of PC games. And seriously that number is grossly over inflated. That would probably include the freakin' electricity to run the stuff. Christ. My friend and I both calculated the "real cost of being a gamer", keeping in mind someone who has NEVER owned a handheld, console, PC, TV, or games. The abosolute MAX we could reasonably come up with was around 6k.
$2,385 dollars for a 3DS, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360 w/ Kinnect, and a $1500 PC (with all the assumed accessories, mouse, keyboard, speakers, monitor, etc.)
$600 dollars for a 42" ish LED-LCD TV 1080p (HDMI thrown in here as well)
$200 for miscs. costs (Xbox Live, Internet, an extra controller this was a figure we kinda had disagree to agree upon)
$3000 dollars for 15 games per each system at $40 (A total of 5 systems so 75 games in total) This was chosen as it makes the total value of the games roughly %20 greater than the value of the console, a great amount.
In total $6,185, again an entirely arbitrary amount, easily reducible by as much as half without so much as even a bat of an eye. 17k is just ridiculous.

I spend roughly $500 a year on video games. What really kills my wallet is collecting Thomas Kincaid original paintings.

Clearly, the numbers are inflated to reflect ultra high end, but realistically if you had to buy *everything* today to start over completely, 7-10k is not the slightest bit unrealistic.

This number makes no sense. Is that over a lifetime? Over a year? Without any quantifying timeframe the number is meaningless.
Yeah, most of that stuff isn't stuff you're going to buy, though I am considering a UPS because I think my apartment has electrical problems. I don't think you blow a motherboard and 2 PSU's out of sheer force of will focused through lengthy, ranty, commenting. I don't really need those costs extending to my console setup.

Because I'm trying to jimmy my budget around to make the Vita work in it and I'm not feeling very "what I WANT to spend on it" about it, when I HAVE to buy a memory card (not bitching, just making a point) or because I feel like things to protect the screen are necessary to protect my investment. Optional still, but necessary to me in the long run.
