Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
This was Sony's stab at a FFVII clone, trying to jump onto the 4-disc bandwagon if I remember right. And though I loved it in seventh grade, I played it again my freshmen year of college and it's nothing special. The story is a real mess, dialogue included; none of the characters have any personality; and the combat is really bland. Defending heals you 10% of your life, or something similar, and you can only cast Magic when you're in Dragoon mode (think Limit Break bar filling up over time and going away after just a few turns). I always wanted to save my Dragoon powers for a boss fight, so every non-boss fight literally was constant attacking and defending. You can do timed button presses to combo attacks, like an expanded Super Mario RPG. That kept me on my toes. But you can't change combos within a battle, so you really do watch and perform the same moves over and over and over.
I don't remember liking the music; I remember the same tracks playing over and over again and making me sick.
If anyone does play it, do yourself a favor and don't use Kongol. He's annihilated by magic in every single boss fight, so it's like playing through the game with a party of two.
Honestly, LoD was one of my favorite RPGs back in the day and still to this day do I love it, even though I haven't played it since I was in middle school. I don't want to ruin the experience I had with the game by replaying it an noticing all the flaws.
More likely than not playing an older game such as LoD in 2009 is going to get a reaction like "Wow... this sucks."
And yes, Dart was an awful name for the protagonist. I'll definitely give you that much.
