My Video Game Collection, Also Known As "I Have A Problem"
zombiekiller13 | 9:30 AM on 08.14.2009 26 comments

I started my wild and crazy path into the world of gaming back when I was a wee lad of 4. My aunt would babysit me while my parents went to work, and what better place to take a little kid than a bar?

Yes, I said a bar.

While it probably wasn't the most kid-friendly of places, it did have a couple pinball and arcade machines. The bartender would give me a chair or stool to stand on, and I'd go to town playing whatever machine was available at the time. People in the bar, friends of my aunt, would give me quarters to keep me happy. I have no idea if I had to do a crazy little kid dance or carry beer to their tables; it was a simpler time in 1981, so maybe they just gave them to me without any goofy requests. Thankfully, I walked away with only a video game addiction and not a love for booze.

Anyway, flash-forward 27 years, and I've now got a nice little collection going. Nothing like the collections you'll see online where some dude has every single NES game, or has an entire room filled with games and consoles. But, I'm proud of what I have and figured I'd share it with my fellow Destructoid members.

Here's a shot of everything together, along with a couple game-related figures:

The picture shows somewhere around 410 video games. See? I have a problem, right? I'm just happy that my wife understands my obsession and was kind enough to agree to allow me to display most of the games in our family room (the NES and Genesis are in storage, taken out the other night so I could get them in the picture).

Sadly, I can't find my old Atari games; they are probably buried somewhere in my parents' cellar. And my SNES games were given to my little brother after my SNES died, so I didn't include them. I'll get them back from him someday.

Here's a closer look at the games:

The NES games, with the few surviving manuals. There are a few that I cannot find, such as the first Megaman. Pretty sure those games are in a box with the Atari games at my parents' house...

The Genesis and GBA games, with two of my favorite figures (Mitsuru and Orange Knight). I actually did not own a Genesis; I came upon the console (not pictured) and games when the in-laws moved out of the house we now live in. My wife has a love for ToeJam and Earl, and when we found the box containing it and the other games, she wanted to keep them. One of her brothers sold the family's N64 (bastards), so we didn't want the Genesis to disappear as well. Her parents were cool with it; we didn't tell her brothers (one lives in Florida, the other still lives with my in-laws). They probably don't care either.

The 360 and original Xbox games. My 360 collection has grown quite a bit since I got the system last June. I only own 4 original Xbox games because I never actually owned the console. I also didn't want to buy a game and find out I can't play it on my 360. Stupid pseudo-BC...

The centerpiece of my collection: the PS2 games (also pictured are a few of the Wii and PS1 games). My NES collection didn't really take off until much later, when I started tracking down games I wanted when I was little but couldn't convince my parents to buy for me. My SNES collection was somewhat small, and while I owned quite a few PS1 games, it was the PS2 era that caused my collection to expand dramatically. The 360 and DS may be taking up most of my gaming time, the PS2 was (and is) the one that, in my opinion, had the best and most diverse library. I'm still keeping an eye out for a few titles I missed; one, Shadow Hearts, I am buying off my brother this weekend. Just have to find the other two in the series, along with a copy of the Mega Man X Collection.

...and the rest; the Gamecube, DS, and remaining Wii games (also pictured are a few PS1 games, which I'll get to momentarily). Funny (or sad, depending on how you look at it); the Gamecube is considered a failure by some, with the Wii being marked as a success for Nintendo. Yet, I own more games for the GC than the Wii, and probably spent more time playing those games.

Guess I'm not the target audience that Nintendo is aiming for with the Wii ;)

Finally, I give you a closer look at the PS1 games; apologies for the not-so great pictures. I didn't want my games to take up an entire wall, so I put the shelves up in a corner of the room. After I started to organize them, I realized that there would always be games stuck in the corner. Since I don't play much of them anymore, I put the PS1 games back there so I could easily grab any one of the newer console games.

I also didn't feel like pulling them all out, after digging out the NES and Genesis games. I'm lazy. Sue me.

The unmarked game is Darkstalkers 3; got the game through Goozex with the disc and instructions.

Pretty sure the game under Incredible Crisis is Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Forgot to look at these the other night to see if any names were blocked, and I don't see that one in the other pictures. Also, both Lunar games contain all the junk that came with them. Almost sold them on eBay a long time ago...glad I didn't.

Sorry about the cut-off on the right in this picture. Didn't realize I did that.

And there you have it, my collection. Good? Bad? I do wish I could find my Atari games; while I have a good amount of them on the Atari Anthology disc for the PS2, I would like to be able to show my kids what started my home-console gaming obsession off (they've seen arcade and pinball machines already). They also probably wouldn't believe me if I told them that a console once had a wood finish on it...

I will be needing multiple views of this. Bookmarked.

I never understood why people would own Persona 3 and Persona 3 Fes. collector's mentality I guess.

also, awesome collection. I want it.
Funktastic's Destructoid Blog
I see we have yet another collector on the site! ^_^ I also see you have "I'm a collector and I NEVER have enough goddamn shelf space" syndrome as well! =D Click here for my setup from a year ago (gained about ~350 games since then) to see what I mean, lol. I'm VERY jealous of your Harvest Moon: Back to Nature! Great collection good sir.

@Manasteel88
I didn't want to trade in the first version of Persona 3, as I wouldn't get much for it. Guess I could've thrown it up on Goozex and stuck FES in the box with the art book.

@Funktastic
The shelves started off as three. Then I added the fourth. When I needed more space, I just figured I'd buy 4 more just so I had enough room to expand. A few months later...I'm running out of space.

And jeez...I thought I had a lot of games! My wife would kill me if I had the amount of games you have. I'll be spending the rest of my free time in between running reports at work looking at your stuff. I'm already jealous of your copy of Skygunner, the game I stupidly traded in at Gamestop a long time ago...
zombiekiller13's Destructoid Blog
Also, Funktastic...I just read you started collecting 4 years ago?? Wow...that's pretty intense. I know for a fact my wife would kill me if I purchased that many games in 4 years... :)

Also-also, what is Cash Converters?
Deathofthedead's Destructoid Blog
@ Manasteel88
You keep P3 because it's rarer (ie more valuable), and FES because it's the superior version to play.

Very nice collection, man! Certain parts look quite a bit like my wall (helped, in no small part, by the fact that you organize your games the SMART way - alphabetically - like me), especially everything between Eternal Poison and Haunting Ground on PS2 (GodHand FTW!).

Few questions: What is that next to MGS3: Subsistance? Is it Metropolismania 2?
Likewise, what's that between Under the Skin and War of the Monsters?
I can tell you're a wonderful human being by your copy of Incredible Crisis.
Also, you're right about Skygunner being awesome, and if you ever do see it at GS ever again, it's only $3.99!
zombiekiller13's Destructoid Blog
@Deathofthedead
Yeah, I used to throw all of my games into the entertainment center, but found it helps to keep them alphabetized. Especially when the collection started growing.

Next to Metal Gear...yes, that's Metropolismania 2. Between Under the Skin and War of the Monsters is...Valkyrie Profile 2 (had to check the bigger image on my laptop).

I'm heading out to the local Play and Trade tomorrow to see if they have Skygunner and Fatal Frame II for the Xbox (another one I've been searching for). I have both up on Goozex, but don't think I'll find a seller any time soon.

And as of this afternoon, my brother is selling me both Shadow Hearts 1 and Wild ARMs 2. Now I gotta make more room :)
kauza's Destructoid Blog
Fucking fantastic. I wish I had a room that looked like this. I certainly can't call myself a collector, and probably never will be, but it'd totally be worth it just to be able to walk among that level of awesome every day.
Bulkmailer's Destructoid Blog
I scored Skygunner from Gamestop, good deal but no booklet with the copy. I hate that.
Deathofthedead's Destructoid Blog
You might have inspired me to do a similar post, showing my collection.
zombiekiller13's Destructoid Blog
@Kauza
Thanks - I will admit that I sometimes will walk over to the shelves and just look at all of the games. I know it's small in comparison to some of the hardcore collectors out there, but I'm proud of my little wall o' games. I've also had relatives come over and stare at them, asking questions like "are all of these video games?" or "how much did this cost you?"

@Bulkmailer
I hate that. You find that one game you've been looking for...and it's missing instructions or the case. I had the reverse happen with Mega Man X Collection; case and instructions were there, but they didn't have the disc. Dammit.

@Deathofthedead
If you do, I'd love to see it. I'm always interested in seeing what other people have.
FatherChesz's Destructoid Blog
A righteous collection. I am even more excited to move into my new place and have a proper showcase set up.
Zoel's Destructoid Blog
@zombiekiller13 Cash Converters is a pawn shop that me and Funktastic always go to. They got great deals on games and have large selection of stuff.

I totally fit the desciption of lacking space. on my setup

Funktastic's Destructoid Blog
@ZOMBIEKILLER13
As ZOEL just stated, it's essentially an "upscale" pawn shop and all. I've ruined it for ZOEL and POSSUMWRANGLER (who is sure to post something here sometime soon) though, since I've developed a kickass relationship with the people who work there, in order to get a lot of stuff. You'll understand if you go through my blogs and such. Be sure to check out their collections/setups as well. =D Also, Skygunner is indeed a very kickass game! d('-'d) Plus it's made by ATLUS! ^_^
possumwrangler's Destructoid Blog
Wow, that is a fantastic collection - I especially like the PSone stuff. I completely feel you on the shelving thing, I put up a few more shelves every once in a while, and they just sort of fill up.

I feel your pain on having your parents pick your games for you/missing out on stuff that you desperately wanted. I'm sure glad that mine got me Radical Rex, and Rocky Rodent, instead of LttP, or Chrono Trigger.
zombiekiller13's Destructoid Blog
@Zoel and Funktastic
Thanks - I vaguely remember hearing about this place now. Don't know if there's one near me in PA...I'll have to do some searching. The only place near me that has older stuff is Play And Trade (which I found a few things today at)...or the farmer's market. But the farmer's market booth/kiosk/thing charges way too much. Pretty sure they check eBay prices and then raise theirs by $20-$30.

@Possumwrangler
Thanks! I have been trying to reclaim many PS1 games that I stupidly sold (managed to score a couple today...c-blog coming soon). I may be expanding the shelves soon...

And I was hit-or-miss with my parents; they bought me Dragon Warrior 1, Zelda 1, and Chrono Trigger (now in my brother's possession), but they also got me Deadly Towers and Top Gun (not horrible, but not great either)
zombiekiller13's Destructoid Blog
Oh, and Zoel...I may have to kill you for that Aegis figure.
wanderingpixel's Destructoid Blog
You have the original PS1 Hellboy game! DO WANT! Also, how did you get that Castle Crashers figure?
DaShiz 21's Destructoid Blog
The things I would do for those Lunar's..lol
JLanphear's Destructoid Blog
Great collection! My collection still sucks but I've posted my gets here and there. One day, when my collection is greater, and more organized, I will post my collection on here. :)
peachboy's Destructoid Blog
super great, also super, super great.
gorobei79's Destructoid Blog
Nice collection. Are you by the DE state line in PA by any chance? All this talk of Play n' Trade and the overpriced farmers market is very familiar.
zombiekiller13's Destructoid Blog
Thanks everyone...again!

@wanderingpixel
Behemoth's site sells them (http://www.thebehemoth.com/store/). I'd buy all of them, but my wife would probably kill me. And I'm trying to remember how I got the Hellboy game...it was a long time ago. Probably bought it at Gamestop before they stopped selling PS1 games.

@DaShiz 21
I actually sold them to my little brother 2 or 3 years ago to fund my recent purchase of my DS Lite. A year later, I realized how stupid it was and offered to buy them back. He accepted...thankfully. I had sold a few games to him instead of eBaying them, because I knew he wouldn't go off and sell them. Unfortunately, Suikoden was not one of them, and now I'm hunting around for that.

@gorobei79
I live about 20-25 minutes outside of Philly. Not sure if I discussed the farmer's market here...maybe I did. Zern's Farmers Market in Gilbertsville. They've got a stall that has a ton of games, old and new. When I first saw it, I nearly passed out. They have a wall of NES games in boxes, some still sealed. Problem is, they charge WAY too much. The first Double Dragon was $20, without instructions or a box. With the box (no instructions), it was $30. I bought all three DD's on eBay for $15. They had Suikoden for $90...just found it on eBay for $54 (which I may have to get).

And I hit Play N Trade this weekend; got the third Wizards and Warriors for $5. Pretty sure I saw it at the farmers market for $30. Really disappointing...I was kinda hoping that place could be my go-to place for retro stuff.
mgmgarcia01's Destructoid Blog
How do you handle dust problems?
gorobei79's Destructoid Blog
ah different farmers market then. Theres one like 20 mins south of philly, right at the PA/DE border. They've got a great selection of retro games at the same bent over a chair feelin prices. I was in there a little while ago and they the original zelda in box, beat to hell for 90$. We just got a Play n' Trade, I'll have to check it out
zombiekiller13's Destructoid Blog
@mgmgarcia01

A vacuum. Not being an ass...but, yeah. Just use a vacuum to clean the shelves, give a quick sweep with a dusting cloth across the top of the games. I'm 6', so I only have to stand on a chair to reach the top pile of PS1 games.

@Gorobei79

Maybe the farmers markets got wise to people using them as a cheap alternative. And if the Play N' Trade you are speaking of is right on the PA/DE border (Wilmington Pike/202, across from a large Wawa), the selection is a little "bleh" at the moment. I went there the other day and the only item that had me almost open my wallet was a Dreamcast. The only thing that stopped me was the lack of DC games. I may go back just to get it so I have it in case I find some purchase-worth games...but really, they had a lot of newer-gen games and very few retro ones.

 about me

I've been playing video games for many, many years, starting at the innocent age of 4 (back in 1981). I have no affiliation to any one system; if a console has good games, I'm there. Currently own an NES (yes, it works), Genesis, DS Lite, Gamecube, PS2, Wii, and 360...oh, and a PC, but I rarely play games on it. With well over 300 games for all systems in my collection...pretty sure it's approaching 400 now.

As of late, my 360 has been getting as much play-time as my PS2 had. My poor Wii hasn't been touched in a long time...heh heh. He said "wii".

Hooray.

I said...hooray.

For my win on Chad's "The Great Retro Quiz! .23: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link":

'Bout time my knowledge of the red-headed step-child of the Zelda universe came in handy. Not counting the CD-i games...they are like the bald, albino street urchins that somehow made it into your house and refuse to leave even after you feed them rat poison.
