X-Play reviewed Spore and gave it five stars out of five stars. Here is the video review if you haven't already seen it: http://www.g4tv.com/xplay/reviews/1826/Spore.html.
I'm going to just flat out say this: Spore sucks. PC Gamer gave it a 91% and listed "rudimentary gameplay" under one of the game's cons. If a small, independent studio from a basement in the Ukraine developed this game and the gameplay was deemed "rudimentary," they would get such a low score, prospective consumers would just buy a game like Two Worlds instead. But, alas, Will Wright developed this game! Yes, Will Wright has developed amazing games in the past, but Spore just is not one of them.
X-Play mentions that this game is "highly polished," but the creatures you create have a serious malady of clipping. Especially when they sit. And all the creatures' animations are practically identical and they all dance the same exact way. The world lacks detail, and you can enjoy eating all the food you want. Or, should I say the universe's limitless supply of crab apples?
The gameplay is so dull and basic that a five year old could master this in about ten minutes. The only real appeal of Spore is the cosmetic customization you have at your fingertips. But, if you want a game with any meat at all - go play a good game, like Sid Meier's Civilization, WarCraft III, or hell, World of Warcraft (which is Spore's creature stage... on crack, heroin, alcohol, steroids, meat sandwiches, and a dose of interesting gameplay). Forgive me, but picking between two attacks in the beginning stages of creature phase - bite and spit - to attack opposing creatures and watching my little creation just continuously bite and play a very Pokemon-ish animation is not anything to drop your panties for.
Bottom line: Spore should not be praised as an amazing game because it lacks what amazing games have and that is solid gameplay and replay value. And no, running into a limitless amount of bizarre creations does not count as good replay value. You can browse these creatures on Spore's website and see more in less time.

@Daxelman: There's more to The Sims in terms of depth due to the more complex social networks that you develop and the way your Sim people develop personality and traits. Assuming you're into that sort of thing there's plenty to it. Something that can't be said about Spore.
Of course, if the Sim genre doesn't particularly interest you, there's no point trying to understand what people like about it.
That sir, is why we have wars.
Does he get the comment of the week award?
Still waiting for Spore Wii.
But that's just my opinion. Some people, like my wife, love it. I think it's a good game for casual players.
Also, go take a xanax or something.
