GTA Headshotted by Saints Row
zgerhard | 9:32 AM on 10.13.2008 22 comments

Saints Row 2 comes out tomorrow. Excitement! Let me break it down for you why Rockstar Games should fear for their GTA franchise:

Saints Row, the first Saints Row, is vastly superior to Grand Theft Auto IV in regards to the fun factor. Yes, Grand Theft Auto IV has the brand name, the better graphics (which, by the looks of it, Saints Row 2 will beat) and the hype, but Saints Row gives GTA a run for its money, and Saints Row 2 will be what Grand Theft Auto IV should have been.

Grand Theft Auto IV has you run mission after mission after mission, and by the end of some 20 hours of gameplay, being told that you have to drive to point A, chase person B, and then kill him just makes you say wow, again?. Saints Row mixed up the action of these chase and kill missions with activities and gang pushbacks. Insurance Fraud activity? I don't think I have laughed that hard before playing a game like this. Mayhem activities are also entertaining, and the Escort activities made me giggle. These activities, among others, just make playing the game hilarious. GTA's recent capitalization of realism has turned the laughs and the "this is so ridiculous - it's great!" feeling into more of a "wow, so, this is what it's really like to be knee deep in horse manure" feeling. Doesn't quite carry the same fun factor.

Grand Theft Auto IV took a step back for the GTA franchise and Saints Row has stepped up to bat. Tomorrow, everyone will take notice to the new reign of the open world, hoodlum gang genre: Saints Row.

This Is Vegas, scheduled for release in the future, might even put the GTA franchise in third. Look out, Rockstar Games. Just like Tony Hawk's game franchise got dumped for Skate, GTA will get headshotted for Saints Row.

What...no video? No pics? Shame...

eh, I don't like GTA or sandboxes so I will have to pass on this one. Dead Space is calling.
MrSadistic's Destructoid Blog
ew Dead Space.

Saints Row II has been done before. It's called Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Also, This Is Vegas? Really? I mean Grand Theft Auto IV isn't the greatest game, but saying This Is Vegas will top it is kind of a stretch.

You're right on about the last GTA being too realistic and ruining the fun. I'll keep an eye on Saint's Row 2 to see it fills the sandbox killing void that the GTA series used to be.

DEAD SPACE! I wonder how similar it will be to System Shock 2.
covah's Destructoid Blog
Yeah after a while I got sick of GTA IV sooo much. It really is "drive from point a to b, chase this guy, wash, rinse, repeat"
Rockvillian's Destructoid Blog
I just want a GTA style game where you can time travel. Preferably in a Delorian. I just do. Badly.

Yeah but... food court gangsters dude. Food court gangsters.

GTA had its fun with cheap thrills > grew up and gave us a more mature experience, which may say more about the kind of person that was able to appreciate the game.

Or.....

Fark it i dont actually care what other people think about any certain game as each experience is subjective.(sighs to self)

"the first Saints Row, is vastly superior to Grand Theft Auto IV in regards to the fun factor."
No

"Grand Theft Auto IV has the brand name, the better graphics (which, by the looks of it, Saints Row 2 will beat)"
No. Doesnt even have bullet holes for goodness sake.

"Saints Row 2 will be what Grand Theft Auto IV should have been."
[b]No. Not unless youre talking about the perspective of a 13 year old.[/i]

"This Is Vegas, scheduled for release in the future, might even put the GTA franchise in third."
ROTFLMAO!! No

@ Covah

That really is over-simplifying the game. You can say that about anything. Oh, CoD4? It really is moving from one point of the map while shooting guys in the face. Final Fantasy? It's just running through an area fighting monsters until you level high enough to get to the end. Fighting games? You're just fighting one guy after another.

See? It's easy to be negative about a game when you strip it down to it's basic gameplay.

And yes. GTA is about chasing a car from point A to point B. That's what it's always been. That's GTA.
PwnanObrien's Destructoid Blog
Saint's Row is a soulless imposter of the GTA serise with a few "no-shit" improvements that make it seem more like GTA 3.5 dressed up like a clown.

LOL..................NO

I would fling a lot of constructed arguments why you're completely wrong about Saints Row 'taking out' GTA4, but
this

'Grand Theft Auto IV took a step back for the GTA franchise and Saints Row has stepped up to bat. Tomorrow, everyone will take notice to the new reign of the open world, hoodlum gang genre: Saints Row. '

Proves without a doubt you have no idea what you are talking about, GTA is awesome, it's 'grown up',now, no longer just a murder simulator, simple as.

Oh and TOO MUCH COFFEE MAN, is right.

@Rockvillian

Do want! I was so hoping the Delorean-esque car in Vice City would fly and time travel when you hit top speed!

Gaming needs more time travel.

YOUR OPINION IS WRONG.

GTA is now grown up, LOL, you sound like of those kids who play M rated games only. And if you thought GTA was a murder simulator that proves that YOU have no idea what you're talking about.

I love coffee man's post, "YOU'RE WRONG, I WON'T SAY WHY BUT YOU JUST ARE"

GTAIV was utter shit, repetitive missions, a huge gigantic city with nothing to in it and a story that died around the time you reached the second island, Saints Row is just trying to be by offering an over the top alternative.

Snub your nosses if you want, you keep playing your grim and realistic sandbox game, I'll be over here running through the streets of Stillwater with a katana and then killing zombies with friends.

@Sadistic

Saints Row offers WAY more customization than San Andreas.

Just read this from the people at cracked, it covers the issue that GTA IV has quite well.

If this gets decent PC reviews, then I'll buy it this week. I'm just worried it might be a shitty port.
Skribble's Destructoid Blog
ugh

why make this post?

you actually think saints row 2 will RUIN one of the -largest- franchises in video game history? That Rockstar will see SR2 and say "Holy shit guys...our game was horrible compared to this, lets just stop"

Seriously, hide this fucking fail blog. Saints Row 2 looks fun, GTAIV was fun as hell, your opinion is not wrong, just fucking moronic and not thought out.
zgerhard's Destructoid Blog
@skribble

Skate was like MONDOOSH OWNAGe over any tony hawk game ever. IF you are saying that Saints Row 2 (when its not evne out yet) has NO POSSIBLE CHANCE of doing that to the GTA franchise, you're an idiot.

Saints Row 2 could be the start of a new leader in the sandbox genre. And yes, one hugely successful title will make another company worry. You are dumb. Good day.
Skribble's Destructoid Blog
Dude, what are you even saying?

"Skate was like MONDOOSH OWNAGe over any tony hawk game ever. IF you are saying that Saints Row 2 (when its not evne out yet) has NO POSSIBLE CHANCE of doing that to the GTA franchise, you're an idiot. "

Again, this is YOUR OPINION and not a fact, get that through your head; just because YOU think that Skate was "monodish ownage" over Tony Hawk, doesn't mean everyone else does. Skate didn't ruin Tony Hawk because it offers a completely different experience; one is realistic and grounded while one is over the top and outrageously ludicrous. They offer two differing styles of gameplay and story, just like GTAIV and Saints Row 2.

You do not have to CHOOSE which one is "better" just because they are similar. Learn to like both on their own merits and not on how they compare to eachother.

"Grand Theft Auto IV took a step back for the GTA franchise"

Again, just because YOU don't like something, does not make it lore for the world. You are free to throw your opinion around, that you will like Saints Row 2 a lot more than GTAIV because of X and Y, but to come out saying that Saints Row 2 will kill or hurt the GTA franchise is most definitely ludicrous.

GTAIV brought an amazing amount of new technology and gameplay to the series, it didn't reuse old ideas, it provided a nice storyline and a very gritty and realistic feeling; how the hell is Saints Row, a game were you can dress up like a hotdog and use a sewage truck to spray feces over crowds of people, trying to compete with GTAIV? Because it is a sandbox game based in a city? Wow, nice logic. I guess Wheelman killed Mafia II, and True Crime killed The Getaway, and Crackdown killed Imagine Party Babiez, why the fuck not.

Look, I'm sorry for getting all shitty at you. It just irritates me when someone makes a pointless comparison between franchises. What I'm saying is that you can't just decide GTAIV is IN TROUBLE because you think Saints Row 2 looks better than it; that's just absurd. What proof do you have that SR2 will hurt the GTA franchise? None. You are basing this on your personal opinion of both games and what they offer you.
zgerhard's Destructoid Blog
K let's get academic.

Of course it's all opinion. Heck, even the value of stocks are just the opinions of the investors. But yes, Skate was "mondoosh ownage" over Tony Hawk because 1) critics reviewed the game very high - much higher than Tony Hawk games and 2) it offered a new experience to the genre.

Will SR2 offer a new experience? No. Will it be a lot more fun? As a veteran of the GTA series, yes. I think so. GTA IV did, in fact, take a step back in the GTA franchise because it weighed too much on the realism of the game and it lacked the in depth customization players came to love in GTA San Andreas (a feature that Saints Row 2 maintains).

And, just like Skate offers a completely different experience than Tony Hawk (while still being a skating game), Skate has been proclaimed by critics and players to be superior to Tony Hawk because of this. Loosely related, those scores will have an influence into what people purchase, in turn hurting (or in Skate's case, helping) sales of the game.

If Saints Row 2 ends up, as I predict, to be what GTA IV should have been, then that will turn heads of critics and consumers to look at the developer of SR2 and Rockstar and that will weigh heavily in the anticipation of the future releases of both franchises, so yes, a very successful SR2 will make Rockstar Games tense as they will have to come up with a game that competes with what players loved about SR2.

SR2 encompasses more fun and hilarity and customization than GTA IV and this is why I think it will be more widely liked. People loved the airplanes, the helicopters, the car and character customization of GTA San Andreas and GTA IV tossed that out the window. Instead, GTA IV was a (in the beginning) an engrossing experience - the storyline in the opening of the game was gripping and the game looked great, but the gameplay was lacking. The missions became repetitive, having to hang out with your in game friends became a chore, and the fun trickled quickly. Saints Row is a bit more whacky and off the wall, sure, but it has activities and such that are fun to participate in. I'd rather do mayhem activities to boost my respect than to go bowling or a strip club with my horny cousin.

I'm not deciding GTA IV is in trouble. I'm saying from the looks of it, SR2 will be what GTA IV should have been and will knock GTA off its pedestal because, as I said previously, GTA IV dropped some of the more fun elements of the series to make it more grim and movie like.

Games do come out of left field and demolish the competition and this is a manifestation of my prediction of that outcome.

Point is, GTA IV left out some features that were popular in the previous iterations and SR/SR2 has maintained those features. That, my friend, is a fact.

And I do hope you respond.

I am a relic of the golden glory days of PC gaming, yet I am only 23 years old. I have been tinkering with computers since I was only 6, playing Lemmings on an old DOS machine and a paper floppy. I've had an interest in this tech ever since I was born because my dad was a stay at home dad (sissy) and also a computer programmer. I want to be a writer more than anything. There is nothing better than sitting at a coffee shop with a notebook and headphones blaring trance. If I could make a living at this, I would kiss your feet.

I was born and raised in Sweden and moved to the states when I was a little bit older so I have a very different view of life than my fellow Americans. This sometimes causes conflicts of interest. For instance, baseball is boring to me but put on hockey and I'm glued to the TV. I also like socialist ideas and will preach them for as long as I can. I also believe you should take care of yourself, your friends, your community, your planet... you get the idea. We all live here, we are all in this together, there's no reason we shouldn't all chip in. I am against gated communities.

I find video games, movies, books, and laying on the beach (even though I am capable of sunburn in the winter) to be the best things on Earth and I try to do a little of it all in between my daily rut managing a much hated specialty video game retail store. 5 cool points for those who can guess which one that is.
