Play IX. Its atmosphere and characters make it feel like a 3d version of the original. Plus its got ViVi (that should be enough by itself)
final fantasy IX
i rlly liked it
or XII
both very excellent
VII Definatley (i no i spelled it wrong). I never played it, but i think you should start off with that. I heared its good.
Buddha: ff12 sucked ass. so did 7.
Start with 10.
I have a similar problem, yuiichi. I am good at buying RPGs, but horrible at finding the time to actually complete them. :)
Final Fantasy IX was my favorite out of the ones you listed-- it reminded me the most of the earlier games. Final Fantasy VII is also good, but if you are new to RPGs, Final Fantasy X might work well for its easy difficulty.
also IX is probably the easiest besides X. but playing X and trying to go back to the PSone games might ruin the experience
DJMegaMatX with the assist
It's funny - the two I got the farthest in are IX and X. I'm actually ready to fight the final boss in X but I forget the story (since it's almost 2 years since I last picked it up). I'd be playing from the beginning again.
This is another post that is better suited for the forums...
Anyway... Start from the first one, seriously.
The series mostly improved through out the years.
You might miss something from, lets say Final Fantasy X, when you play Final Fantasy VII after.
Most of the stories don't really mesh togther, I havent played 8 or 9. I'm 25 hours into FFX and I'm not lost at all, it's its own story. And you dont miss anything if you don't play FFVII, other than the experience of what was.
If you're leaning towards VIII then go with that. I loved the atmosphere of the game and the school setting. While it does start out a little slow it's a great game
i went from X back to VII and then to IX. i would say that maybe you should start with IX. Its something of a tribute to the old FF games like VI and such. But some people hated what they felt was a step backwards after playing VII and VIII. It really is a good game though.
