Mercenaries 2: Gettin' Bruckheimer On Their Asses!
youkilledmyguy | 11:48 AM on 09.08.2008 10 comments

Spent several hours earlier playing through Mercenaries 2 on my PC and I still have mixed feelings. The menu design is probably my favorite thing about this game so far. It's really good looking and upon loading the game I was actually excited about playing it. I even considered taking a few screenshots to use as my desktop background.

Once I began playing the game my opinion started shifting. To begin with the controls feel muddy, as if I have an old trackball mouse and it's sticking... except I don't and it's not. It could just be that I'm used to a certain type of pinpoint targeting perfection due to using a keyboard and mouse to play games. While I can forgive some of this due to the fact that the game is third person, that forgiveness only goes so far, especially when games like Ghost Recon had it perfect years ago.

When it comes to the story I feel like they shouldn't have bothered. Much like the early GTA incarnations the plot line serves only to give you an excuse to fuck shit up... which I'm fine with. Like so many big budget action movies, this game has been entertaining to a degree but I'm left feeling slightly empty and ashamed that I didn't use my time to play something more interesting. The characters feel like they come straight out of that abortion of a film "Smokin' Aces"... I mean one of the main characters has a fauxhawk... that's just not acceptable.

I'll probably play it again later just to see if things change up, but I most likely won't finish the game. There are too many other games to play, too many books to read, and too many movies to see to invest time into something this bleh.

Um...it's not a fauxhawk, the sides of his head is shaved, therefore = mohawk. And wasn't this game originally made for consoles? Hmmmmm...

@BlindsideDork

The box art and promo photos have varied when it comes to this fuckers hair. While playing it earlier though the sides of his head don't really look too shaved, it seriously looks like a fauxhawk, either way with those little goatee braids and what not he's a douche. I'm also not sure if it was originally for consoles or not, either way it's not excuse for not tweaking the controls for keyboard and mouse properly.

I played it this weekend on the pc as well and I'm ok with the combat because I expected it to be fairly simple but the driving...really didnt work well with me. Especially the part where you have to test out this car with big wheels on an enemy infested track....I almost gave up I tried so many times. I still like the game for its stupid blowing up fun factor :)

That's no excuse for shitty controls. Lost Planet was originally a console game and it's actually a lot better on the PC.

Yeah, this game needs a patch and better mouse sensitivity badly.

Mercs 2 is a buggy unpolished near mess. They actually decided to go backwards in certina aspects which baffles me. The AI managed to get worse than the original, the airstrike interface of the sequel is less fun than the original and the story to me seems weaker despite the fact that Pandemic said they had a guy devoted to creating a more compelling story. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting an engrossing story in a game about blowing stuff up. it's just that Pandemic shouldn't have over-promised in thiese areas. Same thing with the AI, they said the AI would be better but in my experience AI enemies are dumber and often suicidal - with one caveat, they can actually see through walls so is that an "upgrade'? Don't even bother with stealth or tactics in this game - mercs 2 doesn't allow for it.

If you can overlook the devolution of gameplay compared to the original, glitches, top 5 worst AI ever then there's fun to be had in Mercs 2..

Pandemic is a good developer and Mercs Playground of Destruction was a great title. Mercenaries deserved to be better than it ended up being. I wonder if another 6 months would have helped or did Pandemic dail this one in.

D-NEZ is right on the ball. All in all, I enjoyed the game, but goddamn there were way too many times were I thought about returning the game because of the massive amounts of bugs and glitches in the game.

The original Mercs was 100 times better than this.

I still can't believe they actually released this game in the state it's in. What a disaster.
