Finish Games? I Don't Really Even Start.
youkilledmyguy | 9:45 AM on 02.20.2008 20 comments

I was reading naia-the-gamer's post about not finishing the games we start and it got me thinking about how my own gaming habits have changed over the years. I began to think about how I used to sit for hours and play until I could finish a game and check it off my "need to complete" list. Then I realized that I actually never did that.

When I was younger I did finish more games than I do now, but it still was never a large number. Usually only one or two a year, if that. As I write this blog I'm thinking back and questioning why this is. I love video games so I should explore and enjoy games in their entirety right? Why is it that while other people have fond memories of completing numerous classic titles and current releases, I could take three minutes and write up a list of every game I've ever completed.

Perhaps it started back when I was a kid. The only time I got new games was on Christmas and my birthday (which was two days ago btw, send presents). The only access I had to games outside of my very limited collection was through rental stores, the kind where you'd go into a gas station and rent stuff. I'd go pick out a game and then have a day or two to play it. With such a limited time to play the games I suppose I got used to never finishing them. I'd just play and enjoy the parts that caught my attention over and over again because I knew that by the next time I was allowed to rent a game I'd have forgotten what to do or my save file would have been deleted by someone else.

So that explains where my inability to finish a game started, but what about now? Well I have my own money now so I can buy pretty much any game I feel like, and while I do have enough free time despite taking care of my son, I still don't finish games. Upon trying to remember the last game I completed the last title I remember is Halo 2 on Xbox... when it was released.

It suddenly dawned on me that the reason I don't complete games now as an adult is because I don't play them. Well I play them, but not the single player modes. My entire gaming experience is mostly made up of playing against other people online. Even if a game has a great single player option I don't use it. It could be that the gaming habits which were forced upon me as a child have now left me with the idea that I shouldn't waste my time with the single player mode when I can instantly start playing against other people.

I think I'm missing out on some good stuff. Maybe I'll actually check out the campaign mode on CoD4 today... then again I'll probably just go frag noobs.

Also, games back in the day actually provided a challenge. Nowadays games just give you the ending. I mean look at Alone in the Dark 5's ability to skip a section if it is too hard?

Yeah gaming is a whole lot easier these days. With the advent of new tech games allow you to go with all sorts of alternatives that make the gameplay easier opposed to the straight on approace of games back in the day.

I hate multiplayer and rarely will play online. I enjoy single player much more. Granted I am getting into TF2 with the PS3 crew..but even then I haven't played with them yet.

I wantes to say the first game I finished was Star Fox 64 but now that I think about it, it was actully Kirby All Star (SNES). I did complete a couple of SNES games when I was younger or I got as far as I could get before realizing I was screwed.

Now that I'm older, ANY game I get, I try and complete it. If I have a game, chances are I'm going to make sure I beat it before I move on to anything else. Becuase now that I'm older I can play games a lot better and I know I have the skill to complete them (eventually).

I wrote a post about this too, but I think the main issue for me is that when I was a younger there just weren't that many awesome games. Now that gaming is mainstream there are way too many and it's like I've got gaming ADD. I can't wait to finish one so I can play another, and often I don't.

Man i have to finish a game. In fact I have a rule that I don't play another game until I've finished the first. I'm also not that much into multiplayer unless its with friends so I guess Iahve mroe time.

The hardest part about finishing games for me has to do with release dates. When several come out at around the same time, it's easy to start on one, just to have it pushed aside by the next.

I used to finish every single game before moving on, but these days it's hard to do. I still squeeze some in there.

I know I mentioned this in some cblog in the past, but my issue is that it's hard for me to start games just based on how many come out and how many I buy. I got Super Mario Galaxy, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, and Kingdom Hearts II all at about the same time. To this day, I've only completed Galaxy and started Mass Effect, having not even touched Assassin's Creed. (I might have made more progress in Mass Effect if I could find where my missing copy went.)

@ Necros:

Don't buy so many at the same time.

Alot of people are like this. I usually try and finish the campaign before I go online, but it's too hard to resist. Online gaming has changed me, for sure.

Awesome post meng. Keep writing!

Everyone has their collection of games they've either never started or never finished.

I still haven't touched Okami or DQ8, and haven't finished -- and probably won't ever -- FF12.

I feel just about the same here. Back then we could finish games even though they're hard. Now when we finish them, it's either cause it's too easy, too quick, or actually just finishing a 3-4 year ignore of the game and finally decided to sit down and play it.

I will admit that I had some nice ole PSX RPG runs back in the summer (Xenogears and Chrono Cross are probably the biggest 2.) I'd go over my mom's house for almost the complete summer and as soon as I wake up, eat some food, and wash up, I'd glue my ass to the T.V. for the rest of the day. Only getting up for bathroom breaks, food, or a good show that was on. Really felt like what you should do when a good game comes out.

now that i'm alittle older and don't have that free time (and some money constantly in my pocket.) I find myself buying more games than playing them. Especially my 360 collection. Out of the recent games i've bought (DMC4, Gears of War, Naruto, Mass Effect) I've finished DMC4, only started Naruto, Still early in Mass Effect, and haven't even taken the plastic off of Gears of War yet.

It varies really on the game for me. Games like DMC I'll sit down day to day just to finish cause I know I can beat it and i'll enjoy the many modes. Whereas things like Blue Dragon I need to play on and off to keep myself interested. And then there's games like Disgaea where you need to completely shut yourself off from everything that's not named Disgaea and PS2.

I only finish games that interest me. Recently it was DMC4 and Turok because I found both to be stellar games, in the future its gonna be Lost Odyssey because the story is interesting enough for me to see it through.

But before that I finished Mass Effect back in November, I'm not gonna waste my time with games that I lose interest in, and I hate multiplayer.

I rarely finish RPGs or games I don't like, but for the most part I make a point to finish what I start.
I also replay a lot of game I've finished along ago. Right now I'm playing through Xcom: UFO Defense again, and last month Deus Ex and System Shock 2.
