Call of Duty 4 Is Lonely...

Versus posted a blog about CoD 4 and it got me wondering why I don't play it as much as my other games despite it being made of awesome.

I've been playing CoD 4 on and off over the past few days. It's fun and I feel is a much more "intense" gaming experience than TF2. While Team Fortress 2 can have some epic battles and is basically non-stop action the cartoonish and un-realistic nature of the game tends to continually remind me that I'm just playing a game. CoD 4 is serious business. I'm paranoid, looking behind every bush, listening intently for footsteps. I like it.

My big problem with CoD 4 isn't really a flaw with the game. It's that in on my regular TF2 server everyone talks. There are always people talking about strategy, where the enemies are, and now that we've all played together for so long we talk about real life shit while we play. Then there are the server forums where the discussions continue and of course the LAN parties that people travel to. It actually feels like I'm playing with friends.

In contrast every CoD4 server I've been in has been silent, aside from one guy named "myassmyass" shouting "MY ASS" every couple of minutes. I start feeling like I'm playing a single player game with amazing AI. Sure at the end of each match there is the obligatory "gg", but other than that nothing is said.

I'd probably get a lot deeper into online play if folks actually used the talk feature. Personally it just makes it more fun, you feel more like an actual team. Then it might help me learn the layout of the maps, including the spots to look out for and good places for cover. That would be useful because if you compare the CoD 4 maps to something like 2fort there is a lot to learn and the learning process can take awhile when you're suddenly dead. Yes there is the kill cam feature, but if you don't know the map layout it's really not going to do much good.

I've talked to a few people about this non-talking issue and they've suggested that because the game play is so fast and everyone is constantly moving there isn't much chance to talk. At first I thought that might be a good point. Then I remembered all my time playing CS and the Rainbow Six games online. Everyone was chatty.

All in all CoD 4 is awesome and I'm happy I have a PC that runs it well. The only flaw I've seen so far is the silence. I don't like it.

Well, on 360 it's got quite the vibrant community. Then again, more people own it on the 360 then the PC. I dunno man, that sucks for you. I don't talk unless gaming with friends though, so I've got no problem with people being silent. It's calm.

I'm with EDS. I'm playing a realistic FPS. I like to talk to friends yes but I don't like it when you hear babies crying, people having a tea party and other mindless yelling. I hate it when people talk utter nonsense and then shoot the crap out of me. But then again, maybe I should be the one shooting them.

I talk. Team death match doesn't have much to say but search and destroy is almost impossible to play without communication

I talk too, but generally we just use one of the fof-accounts to get a party going that is big enough for us to all kinda know eachother in some way or another and its also great to be able to talk in your native tongue :-)

Join a clan and play other game types besides team deathmatch. But I completely understand what you're saying. TF2 has way more teamwork. I want to play it but I can never get into a MOTHER FUCKING GAME!!!!!!!!!!!! For you see, I have it on 360. And we get fucked in the corn on a regular basis.

I just hate it when people don't shut the hell up. There's a fine line between communicating and talking. Too many people are annoying as shit on 360.

I choose to have my mic off for when I say shit to myself (like my personal running commentary of how badly I'm playing or how cheap the other team is being) and only flick it on when I need to communicate something important to the team. Then again, from my experience, I'm the exception and not the rule.

So there's no in between? The PC version is too quiet and the 360 version people don't shut the fuck up.

100% agree: talking > not talking, it makes the game infinitely more fun. I play TF2 quite a bit and I've gotten fairly deep into the community that runs the server that I play on (I even got admin a short while ago), but that's only because I played on a shit ton of servers until I found one cool enough to call home.

I'm sure there's a CoD4 server out there where people are talking, just gotta find it.

PC FTW over Live by the way. I can't fucking stand the "community" on Live.

Yeah, TF2 is much more objectives-based than anything in CoD4, except for Search and Destroy, and possibly Sabotage. Like GHost said, finding a good (and hopefully where people are talking) server and sticking with it makes a huge difference in the experience.

Only problem with a cool server where people are talking is that you meet jerks who join your clans A-squad and then spend all their time posting about CoD4 on Destructoid....

Jerk... :D

I talk if I have something to say, that's if I'm playing with strangers, if I'm playing with friends we usually try to communicate unless we're losing badly in which case everyone goes deathly silent.

I sadly haven't been able to play COD4 yet, but other than talking with my team for strategy, I honestly wouldn't want to hear that much talking. If I wanted Halo, I'd go play it.
