With E3 happening right now the fanboys have been let out of their cage and let loose around the internet forums. Usually Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo fanboys never really bothered me, but this year it seems they’ve gotten to me. I’ve been trolling a lot of websites these past 24 hours and after all of Press Conferences to view a lot of people’s reactions. What set me off to write about fanboys and hardcore gamers was what I would read: “Microsoft sucks, SONY IS DEH BOMBAH” “Nintendo’s gay, HALO RULEZ!!@!” Not giving any incites to what they thought of the companies E3 line up, just utter nonsense. Sadly, this is what most of the gaming market is composed of.
I will openly admit I’m not even close to being a mediocre Halo player but I love to play online. Yet, I hardly seem to play online because of the “Hardcore” players. Yes, nowadays it seems that being a hardcore gamer is being able to play Halo, Gears of War, and Madden online, talk smack about your opponent, and whooping their ass. I always felt being a hardcore gamer was not necessarily being an Elite at a game, but being able to enjoy the game, graphics, gameplay and storyline. A hardcore game in my eyes is someone who doesn’t hate all systems out there but has respect for the industry and the work these programmers and artist put into a game. Sure everyone has their favorite console and game but to go online and flame another person about what they like is ridiculous. Yes when we kids back in 90’s, eating at lunch to rip on our friends about how old Mario is or to listen about how gay Sonic is was considered our flame wars of the time. Now it just seems ridiculous how out of hand these wars have gotten. I was watching G4’s coverage of E3 last night and they had just had a hands of Heavenly Sword (Which looks amazing) and they had a Stickam called who of course was just complaining out how the PS3 lacks this and that. Not giving any respect to the developer that had made such an amazing demo. Joel Gourdine had to keep getting the kid on track about how great the game looked and played but the kid kept going back to how bad the PS3’s line up is.
Now of course these comments are not aimed at anyone at Destructoid. I’ve been a reader of the site for a long time and always enjoyed and respected a lot of the reader comments. I think Destructoid is composed of what a lot of gaming sites lack and that is their community. The community here has a great voice and is given respect for it especially with these community blogs.

Unfortunately i have some fanboyish tendancies so i can't really say much without sounding like a hypocrite.
However, i also agree with your point about online gaming. I too am not a fantastic gamer when it comes to FPS' and my online experience is always ruined when some douche has a go at me for absolutely nothing.
Or betrays me so he can have the mongoose i was driving, thus meaning that my team mate who i had just driven to the enemy flag now had no escape route. We eventually lost the whole game.
Then the player who betrayed me slagged everyone off in the post game lobby.
The only way i can remedy this is to get a full friends list and be part of a game full of people i know won't act like twats.
Though i only have 5 friends so that's gonan take a while lol
I think Hardcore gamers don't have to play multiple systems, just plays a lot of games.
I mean I have played games all my life, I love them. But it was only RECENTLY that I acquired an opposing console, does that make me anymore hardcore cause I have 2 consoles? Was I was less hardcore 5 years ago even though I would stay up late playing a new game?
Read watup's comments at the end. Exact definition of a fanboy, it's a little entertaining and pathetic at the same time.
White, brown, cream, or giblet, I don't care, but daddy needs his fix!
Oops, I though this was my therapy blog. Wrong site.
I think a hardcore gamer looks at a game, and thinks of how many meals he'll eat at home instead of at Arby's or Wendy's to buy that game.
I think a hardcore gamer will buy a game in the face of ageism and play it anyway. (So fuck you Mr. Gamestop employee. I will take that copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix! I don't care if you think 30 is too old for a kiddie game.)
I think a hardcore gamer will be the one who doesn't cheat, doesn't own an action replay (unless it's for import games), and thinks Brady has made a killing off of the uninformed and unenlightened.
I think a hardcore gamer reads Destructoid.
I think a hardcore gamer doesn't give two shits about console fanboyism, but he has his heart in one system anyway, even if he owns more than one.
A hardcore gamer doesn't buy EA sports games, but knows people who do, so he keeps his street cred up with the "normies" by roundly stomping their asses at Madden and NHL.
A hardcore gamer still has a two-generation old system still integrated into their AV system.
A hardcore gamer has AT LEAST thought about fapping to DOAX.
A hardcore gamer knows the name/location of at least one independent gaming store and knows the owner by name.
A hardcore gamer has most likely worked for EB/Gamestop/BB/CC, and now disavows the company's relevance to the gaming community at large.
A hardcore gamer HAS waited in line for a console.
A hardcore gamer reads Penny Arcade, VG Cats, and GameFAQ's boards for his source of humor.
Anyone else?
That is a keeper.
This whole what is hardcore thing will rage on for years. A lot of people call themselves hardcore just to feel superior to others. It's lame.
Fanboy's will not go away either. They'll always be there to piss you off in one way or another. I consider myself a Nintendo FAN. If they screw up, I'm mad at them, but as long as they put out some quality titles I will still buy their hardware and games. I like my PS3 too. I've only had it for a few weeks but I've had a great time with Motorstorm and Resistance and I look forward to a lot of games from them as well as the back catalog of PS2 and PS1 games that I missed.
I would have gotten a 360 if they had issued their 3-year warranty sooner, because, for cereal, the RROD was a huge turn off. There are a lot of quality games, and a lot of people play XBL all the time on Dtoid. I wish I could afford one just to play Uno with Snail and Tazar.
Anyway, I think I just rambled.
@DVD, Gravy is Awesome-sauce.
Also, I don't think there are any independent video game store.
Being a hardcore gamer is spending $15 on a sealed F-Zero GX "Race Official" shirt that was used for the contest at GameCrazy before the game comes out and wears it to work! Right? Am I right?
( I lawl'd when I saw DvD playing Harry Potter. You ARE hardcore! )
There's a yo momma joke about Expelliarmus'ing the dick outta her mouth that could be written, but that's just too nerdy to try in public.
@Blindside
CAD is only funny when Ethan isn't trying his latest Decemberweenmas storyline or the current one about religion. For some reason, the more he strays from straight gaming jokes, the less funny it gets with his comic.
Also, Ethan breaks daily comics artist tradition of capping your storylines at one week arcs. He may be a MWF only comic, but I don't wanna read a month's worth of comics to get one story line.
Bloom County was the only comic that could pull off multiweek story lines, and that was mostly because it was as political as Doonesbury at times, and the events were worth keeping the storylines alive.
I was on XBL playing Gears in Co-op with my buddy who lives in Japan. Suddenly he got real silent in the middle of his game. And then the explanation came, as he was "busy" with a blowjob in mid game. But somehow, he carried on and managed to not only not die, but cover my ass from some exploding Wraiths.
I fucking hate him sometimes.
Fucking perverts in Japan get all the fun shit, without any of the social stigma
Personally I like CAD, VG Cats, PA, but I also enjoy 8-Bit Theatre, PvP and Dueling Analogs
Your friend is a lucky man. I get the death ray look from my girl if I even mention gaming or want to play a game if I'm around her.
:)
I didn't notice until he started talking about Heavenly Sword... I was like "wtf, why is that game at E3?"
