Goodwill Hunting episode 1: SNES and the blank cartridge photo
Want your blog on our home page? Answer this!

[Editor's note: I'm promoting this one as a friendly PSA to remind you all that Goodwill and thrift stores do hold good finds every so often. -- CTZ]

[Goodwill Hunting is a possibly weekly series about my gaming adventures at local Goodwill Stores and thrift stores. Sometimes it will be interesting and sometimes it won't be. Just like Goodwill. I may occasionally hold contests for games I find and already own or don't feel like keeping, so keep your eyes open for that because everyone likes free stuff, right?! This first episode occurs over a period of about two weeks.]

It all started around Noon on a Friday. The location, a little home owned restaurant with my mother, brother, and fiancee. I had ordered the American burger special, all beef patty, cheddar cheese, onion, mayo, mustard, hold the ketchup. Soup or salad? Soup, clam chowder.

The soup comes. It's delicious. I'm not usually a clam chowder fan but this is an exception. Everyone else with me is eating salad or nothing at all because their meal didn't come with anything. Sucks to be them, right?!

Soon, the main entrees are delivered and the table is mostly quiet while our mouths are filled with food. My fiancee asks for a to go box as we get ready to leave as she still has about half of here tomato tortellini left.

We leave. She forgets her box. She becomes sad.

Across the street is a Goodwill. It's about 12:15. I work at 1. It takes about 30 minutes to get to work from here.

There's enough time.

I instantly go to the area where the videogames are usually displayed although it is not the only place. I have occasionally found games in the board games section, the toys section, and the VHS section as well.

In the display case sits a Super Nintendo cartridge. It's body stripped bare to a dull gray plastic. There is no label and the cartridge has lost it's identity.

I contemplate for a minute. I don't own a Super Nintendo, but that doesn't mean I won't eventually. I was born a Sega child but that doesn't make Nintendo things bad. Just different. Plus, this game could be Earthbound! I can get Earthbound for $3.38! How did Goodwill think of $3.38 for videogames, anyway? Couldn't it just be $3.50?

So, I decided to buy the naked cartridge that it's owner's had so obviously abused. It's like adopting a little puppy from the pound that's never had a good home, except what I'm doing is even more noble. I could be buying a fucking sports game for all I know.

And that's how that day ends. Soon I went to work and the day went on as usual. But in the back of my mind at all times was the cartridge. Its gray plastic glow staring at me with its label-less eyes.

What game is under there? What secrets do you hold?

About two weeks pass and I'm on one of my regular Goodwill visits. I work part-time at a local university teaching 3-D animation and just down the road is a Goodwill I often visit after work. I still did not know what this blank cartridge held and so was constantly on the lookout for a Super Nintendo system. I instantly went to the usual videogame section and there it was sitting on the glass counter. Wrapped up in large amounts of packing tape: Two Super Star Wars games, two Controllers (one Nintendo, one Interact), an AC adapter, a RF Switch, and the Super Nintendo console. Stamped on top $25.38. I'm buying it. I have seen Super Nintendos here before but never complete like this. Usually, there's just a lone console, no cords or controllers. This was a rare find. I bought it instantly.

After taking it home it took me a few days to finally hook it up and find out what this blank cartridge was. I didn't really want to ruin the mystery. For me it could be some rare valuable RPG but in truth it had a better chance of being something crappy. Why ruin my disbelief? Why tell the kid that Santa isn't real?

But I eventually did find out.

My fiancee was over and she wanted to play Super Mario World, which, I had recently purchased. I started cutting off the mass amounts of packing tape that had been applied to the Super Nintendo system. I plugged the AC adapter in. Hooked the RF switch up to the TV. Blew in the blank cartridge and pressed it firmly into the cartridge slot and turned the power on.

The Capcom logo appears. This is a good sign.

And then...

Breath of Fire II

Not a bad find, I say. I've heard about the series before and never have actually played them myself. It may not be Earthbound but it's definitely not NFL Quarterback Club either. A quick Amazon.com search shows the game's value to be around $20. I'm happy with my purchase. I saved $17. Now, someday I might get around to playing it although I might look into getting Breath of Fire I to play first. Only time will tell.

Until the next Goodwill Hunting!

Yeah, not bad. I was fully expecting it to be Pit Fighters or something terrible.

good luck on your next trip...BoF2 isn't my favorite in the series, but you could have done a lot worse. It could have been Revolution X

That's the best part about Goodwill shopping, you can do every day of the week and find something new. Great find!

In a similar situation, I once found a Japan-only SD Gundam game that was stuck in an Out of This World casing.

I don't care what anybody says but I think that RevolutionX is the shit. I just got really good at it as a kid on my sega, moving the crosshairs around with the d-pad was annoying at first but then I grew very accustomed to it. Soooooo yeah, I was young then but I would still play it now to see how enjoyable/lame it is in these current times.

There's probably no better way to break out of the comfort zone than by playing Russian Roulette with this kind of thing. I look forward to future installments.

I was extremely surprised that the game actually turned out to be something decent. 90% of the time Goodwill just has sports games so I was mostly expecting that. I look forward to doing future installments although they won't be quite so mysterious. This is the only time I've actually found a non-labeled game. Usually I'll probably give a weekly rundown of what games I found and probably review and critique them, but I'm sure there will be some strange stories to come. It is Goodwill.

That's actually a pretty good game. The translation is pretty bad though. Actually, Destructoid did an interview with a guy who headed up a fan translation of the game.

I found a LucasArts SCUMM game boxset for $15. I go on ebay to find its value, and lo and behold it's going for upwards to $95!

I found a copy of "Under a Killing Moon" for PC at a goodwill once for 3 bucks. It has been a conversation starter at my place ever since.

Wow, reminds me of two weeks ago when I found a Dreamcast, all the cords, two controllers, and two VMUs for 40 bucks. I bought it, took it home, opened it, and what was sitting in the console? Fucking Shenmue II.

You did the right thing, for three and a half bucks you've got to succumb to the curiosity. When I lived in Virginia there were a couple of good thrift stores that would have video games in pretty frequently, and I got more than a few from 'em. Unfortunately the ones in Minnesota I've been to were massive disappointments.

What's the Canadian equivalent to Goodwill? I only search used game stores, but most of them charge more than you can get them on Ebay.

Yeah, well I bought two DreamCast's from my GoodWill for 25 dollars. I don't think they knew it was two, plus about six controllers and 4 VMUs in an apple box. Only one AC adapter. But you know what was inside them? Fucking NBA 2K and TrickStyle. I win.

Man I wish I could make encounters like this. We got a Bookmans not far from here and bought a GameBoy Color with Tetris and Oracle of Ages for 35 bucks. I think it was an ok purchase, but finding nlank cartridges is something that I should experience once.

Thanks for sharing.

I work at Goodwill (in MO)! You will not believe the stuff I've seen people give away. What's funny is that there are 3 game stores within a mile or so from the store....one's a block away. It's been rather dead lately, (nothing cool in terms of games or systems) but it should pick up around Christmas-New Years....I urge all of you to check out your local Goodwill around then...

I'm glad you've all enjoyed my post. You just can't say no to a happy ending.

@16bitmonster - Can't I just keep it for a little while? You can have the *cough* brilliant *ahem* RPG for Genesis, Sword of Vermilion. I think it's a fair trade.

I worked at Goodwill in Los Angeles(Beverly Hills/Hollywood) and you wouldn't believe the stuff people give away. Dolce & Gabana(sp), Gucci, sealed packages of SuperScope6™ Super Nintendo Entertainment systems, etc.

Good read! Look forward to more.

There's no need to play part 1 first. 2 was an amazing game and hopefully you'll give the rest of them a chance up until part 4.

The last time I went to goodwill I think some collector had just given away part of their collection...got shenmue, house of the dead for saturn, and skies of arcadia...all for 5-8 dollars each. I love that place.

I got a sealed copy of Total Distortion for the PC...sells for 30-50 bucks on eBay so I guess it wasn't a total loss. I dream of finding a 3D0 or something completely off the wall one day.

The local Goodwill by my house has probably scored so much off my dad, who always took it upon himself to get rid of systems I didn't play anymore. He never believed I should have more than 2 systems at once as I lived between two houses.

This means that when I got into collecting older gaming systems (I was born in '91) he single handedly gave away my NES with about 20 games, my Atari 2600 with 100 games, and my 3D0 that I got at a yard sale complete for $20 with Samurai Shodown, the original Need for Speed, Road Rash, and 3 or 4 other awesome games.

Needless to say, I don't keep consoles at his house anymore.

i call injustice for Sword of Vermilion! But since i have played BoF2 a couple times maybe it is time to let someone else have the joy..

also, guess we should continue to squash the beef between sega and nin boys... always up for a throwback duel in the streets tho..
