I should have a formed opinion on GDC (that it's a mini E3 at this point and that they could just scratch the C out of that acronym and add a S for Showcase) and write about what this year will be all about based on these last weeks exciting news. That sparkle never ignited a flame in me. Instead I'm starting to feel overwhelmed with game news and debates to the left of me and canons to the right of me. This year started off with two great AAA titles (DMC4 and Burnout Paradise) and following last years crescendo of games I've finally found time to sink my teeth in Team Fortress 2, Call of Duty 4, Unreal Tournament 3, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Project Gotham Racing 4 and many others that I want to play more of.
What I am starting to feel however is a contempt for the common consensus that is being perpetuated throughout the gaming community about PC gaming. I have taken it upon myself to start supporting my favorite platform more than I have in past, not just from buying games but to actively preach about it to friends and E-tards (thanks Jack) on the internet. I am not alone and I feel obligated to thank everyone here at Destructoid who also have taken it upon themselves to start setting the record straight for what PC gaming actually means for the consumer. However, this is both a case of preaching to the choir and arguments falling on deaf ears, as this community hardly stretches outside the realm of hardcore gamers, who either have already picked a side and chosen to stay with it. That term I just said, "picked a side" sounds awful, by the way. When did this become a war? Is co-modification actually a good future after all? What bothers me about the current state of mind in the gaming community regarding PC gaming is that it also involves that strongest proponents of the platform. Listening to my favorite podcast this week, 97.5 The Brodeo a.k.a. GFW Radio, and watching the latest 1UP Show, and hearing all the talk about PC gaming from GDC, I found that it all came down to smaller indie-games as the future and savior of the platform. That bothers me. There is a lot of talk about the PC these days and we are seeing a lot more attention to it, now that the next-generation consoles are the current-generation consoles, and thats a good thing. What bothers me is that the talk always involve indie games and casual games. The fact that UT3 and Crysis were two commercial disasters on the platform is the indication that the platform is dead and that those AAA titles with amazing graphics fit better on a console, are arguments that bothers me. Microsoft's keynote at GDC mentioned nothing about PC gaming. Absolutely NOTHING (hey, say it again)! That, in conjunction with the enthusiast press, is turning the PC into an casual gaming platform that "you and your whole family can just pick up Peggle on and try and beat each other's scores, yeah!" That bothers me. A lot. (I must pay homage to Sins of a Solar Empire to break loose the chains and pushing PC gaming even in this day and age, strategy games will play a huge role for the future of the platform) So, to sum up what bothers me, if you haven't noticed, is the direction the mindset of PC gaming is headed. Not just from developers and consumers, but from the actual enthusiasts themselves. They play into this notion and are desperate to save their platform, just as much as I am, that they forget what the system is capable of and what platform RPG's, FPS's and racing games first emerged on. Take a look at the history of videogame consoles. In what direction is their technology heading in? They are essentially turning into PC's. That's why we are seeing this paradigm shift in consensus of what a platform is capable of and on what platform a certain genre of game belongs on. To me, casual games and arcade games are preferred on a console, whereas graphically impressive and intelligent game experiences are best played on a PC. I can tweak the settings to my liking, I can chose to play with a controller or mouse and keyboard, I can hook up my PC to a 50" plasma or LCD TV if I want and I can alt-tab out to check my mail and stocks just before a boss battle if I want (not to mention the ridiculous amount of porn available to me from the get-go). I do acknowledge the hassles of owning a PC and having it as a gaming machine. If you wanna be on top, it's gonna cost you. But if you wanna be able to squeeze out the amount of graphical power like the 360 or PS3, expect to land at a lower price point compared to buying either one of those consoles. You buy peace of mind with a console (for the most part). You know it'll work and what the game will look like on your screen. No driver hassles and no crashes. But if you want to play games in higher resolutions and more optimizing capabilities, the PC has more to offer (if you didn't know, not one current-gen console game runs in 1080p). All anyone can do is buy games for the platform they enjoy to play on the most. But know your options and educate yourself. The internet is a good place for education, but it is also the best place for indoctrination. Get out there, make an informed decision and support the platform you want to play your games on. Don't contribute to diminishing other platforms and turning them into something they're not. That goes for meaningless bloggers, for the enthusiast press and for the developers, publishers and manufactures. And please, stop flaming other peoples choice of gaming experience. War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing...

It is great to know that games like World of Goo and Audiosurf are out there showing the innovation possible on the PC, but to see games like UT3 and Crysis seemingly bomb on the PC is worrying.
In addition because so much is being distributed via steam we don't see NPD numbers. We still have a lot to look forward to in 2008 including Spore, Fallout 3 (please dont suck), and maybe Starcraft 2 if we get lucky.
STARCRAFT 2
Yep, I took the indoctrinated bait there myself and only looked at the US sales figures. Crysis has done, and continues to do, extremely well in Europe. And not to forget the ever increasing number of digital distribution via Steam (I bought the Orange Box via Steam, of course). Thanks for spinning this cynical post into something more positive.
And yes, we have A TON of PC games this year! I long for Far Cry 2, Fallout 3 and many, many more...
I prefer to play FPS's on my PC when I can. Currently, it's too old and the 360 does play them, so I play most of them on the 360 instead. If you remove FPS as a PC-only genre like RTS/Strategy and MMO's, I'm not sure if that much has really changed.
Sins of a Solar Empire was a nice try for instance, but it still doesn't rival Galactic Civilizations 2 or even Master of Orion 2. We haven't had that many great RTS in the last 4 years either: C&C3 maybe, Supcom and World in Conflict? Consoles had 10 times as many JRPG's, arcade racers and FPS ports in the same time.
I don't think that PC gaming is really dead or that much in decline compared to previous years. Consoles just sell more games, more people have them and they are getting more and more good games that are not playable on the PC. That's a lot different from the N64 days, when the PC ruled supreme in pretty much all aspects. The consoles have just caught on more, and most people don't seem to mind playing an FPS with dual analogs.
I do agree that this change seems to block any attempts at great PC-only games like Tie Fighter or an actual new Transport Tycoon. Also, porn + HDTV should settle any dispute from now on.
RPG's and racing games are excellent examples of genres that have slowly switched to the console side, and that formula is now being applied on FPS's.
Look for example at games like The Witcher as far as RPGs go. Also Oblivion, while I absolutely hate the game, its at least playable on a PC via modification, something you can't do on a console.
As for FPS games, I don't know how you can play TF2 without custom maps. CoD4 on PC gets the same deal, allowing customs and game mods to make the game more enjoyable. And while UT3 on the PS3 may get the PC content, it only gets a fraction of it and in order to have that content, you HAVE to have PC player make it, the PS3 user base is dependent wholly on PC Gamers making things.
i totally agree with you. i prefer rpg's on the pc (although i'm quite new to the genre) and games like the witcher couldn't have worked on a console.
as for fps's, the pc side of things will never ever frigging ever stop, but if you look at sales (which publishers and developers want to do 'cause they want to make money) the console version (apart from The Orange Box) of fps's sells more on console than on pc.
We don't all have that luxury of custom maps; sorry for being console scum :(
Theres something like 30 maps on the PC TF2 server, and Ive been working on making my own for the past 2 and a half months. :)
10 dollars for some new maps for halo 3 vs 20 new maps for TF2 for free on PC?
The decision is easy. PC gaming is long from dead.
what?
just to put things in perspective: caffeinepowered is the biggest tf2 pc gamer i've seen, so you have to take that into account when he says things like "I don't know how you can play TF2 without custom maps". to (i ahte to use this term) the average gamer six maps is more than enough. in fact, i think having just six awesome maps is a feature, not a bug.
And no, the forge is Halo 3 is not a substitute for Hammer in the Source SDK.
and yeah, if you play a game hard enough you get bored with the same maps after a while. but i still rather have 6 totally awesome maps than 16 half-ass ones.
And LOL@ the PC fanboys attacking Halo 3 again, the argument is old and played out, Halo 3 is a fun game, GET OVER IT.
Halo 3 isn't perfect but its fun and custom gametypes break the monotony quite well, TF2 has even less maps than Halo and gametypes.
Whatever, nobody's gonna listen anyway cause Halo is the enemy to the PC fans.
*facepalm* They wheren't attacking Halo again, if anything they where attacking the fact that consoles are ruled with an iron fist by their manufacturers so that custom user made content isn't an option...
Why are you trolling PC posts all the time? Did a PC game drive over your puppy? Do you feel threatened in your e-peen? If you don't like PC gaming, that's fine, leave us who do discuss it in peace and accept that not all people only play consoles....
I had fun with it, got bored and moved on. I was making a point about maps and how they can help lengthen a game's lifespan. As far as TF2 goes...theres ~450 listed on FPS banana, the TF2 server has ~30.
There are 15 maps for halo 3 including the map pack which you must pay extra for.
There are also 9 default game types for halo 3. As for TF2, there are 5 (Control Point, CTF, Death Match, Territory Control, and Escort the Cart), not including custom scenarios like all snipers or all melee.
If you are going to flame, please at least try to do a good job at it and back your points up with something.
I never even said the game as a whole was bad; I just said that the maps were terrible. It's a decent shooter but the only exceptional quality is how far its stuck up its own ass. I put it in the same league as Fable; it wasn't so incredibly hyped up, I might actually have enjoyed it.
There is no argument that the amount of customization you can do on PC games is far greater than with any console games, which makes the PC the better option for certain games (TF2, COD4, and even Halo when it's released). And even though consoles are catching up, online multiplayer is just plain better on PC.
Hell I know Caffeine sits with me on this one that ever since the days of DOOM and QuakeWorld, with the original Team Fortress mod for quake and all the customizable wads for doom, gaming on the pc is just far more open. I don't think I could walk away from that. To have all those customizable options for almost every game that comes out.
Thats why the only console I got from this generation was the wii. Its something I can pick up and play every now and then with friends, its inexpensive, and most of the games are rather different from the other consoles. "OH NOES KIDDIE GAMES LOLOLFEG!" Dude don't knock it till you try it, most of those 'kiddie' games for the wii are actually fun as hell with other people.
I respect the console market I do, I love what they have done for gaming as a whole, and its only going to evolve from there. But until I can use my keyboard & mouse along with customizing the games in any way I see fit, the PC will still be my main platform.
Rumors, there are Rumblings.
I'm glad this is POSSIBLE.
PPL just can't count out anything anymore.
@brainderailment
the games are here and they're coming, it's just that their console siblings are getting all the attention.
i call two major factors for this shift of high-end graphics games being played mostly on consoles:
1. what this entire blog post is all about
2. piracy
so, these two working together just inflames the other. which in turn starts a downward spiral. i believe, if we can change the mentality about pc gaming in general and help prevent piracy (which, probably is never going to happen) we can make the pc a healthy platform to produce games like Project Offset, The Secret World, Far Cry 2 (it's a pc game, they've said so themselves) and rpg's like The Witcher.
Saying that Halo 3's forge is a joke is demeaning to the effort that Bungie put into it, in any other console shooter I can't do anything but shoot other people, in Halo I can tweak the game mechanics and do great stuff, I can make maps look totally different.
New for console gamers sure, but its still great, saying "LOL PC modding is much better than that crap" is a very arrogant statement.
You know why I argue so much with you powered? Or any other uber pro PC fanboy?
Because you're arrogant or at least you come off as one, so what if you own multiple consoles? It doesn't change your attitude.
youkilledmyguy is the only Pro PC guy I've seen on this sight who merely speaks his mind on the PC and leaves it at that, the majority of you don't, you must all REALLY like playing shooters.
Well, compared to the modding abilities of PC games, Halo3 doesn't offer much. Forge is awesome and people can do ridiculously cool things with it, and it's perhaps one of the deepest shooters out there when you think about it. But the whole community with Bungie.net and everything is reeaally cool and I hope console developers look to Halo3 when they design their online game.
I like Halo3, but if you were to compare it to the PC modding community it's a totally different thing.
And again with the whole shooters thing, didn't we have that discussion before? And some people pointed out examples of games released last year that weren't shooters (or RTS games).
Forge at least is more akin to Gary's Mod than something like Hammer.
And yes, I will throw the I 'own other platforms too' card, why pay for something you think sucks :)
The only reason I'm discussing with you is because you're the one who comes off as arrogant. The first comment I read from you was "Well, the consoles have all these other kinds of games and the PC only has two" in a thread about PC gaming nonetheless.
I don't talk much shit about the consoles because they do have good games, just like the PC has good games. But fanboys like you, who start posting "ZOMG, PC SUXORS" in threads where PC gaming is the subject are just annoying.
Besides, I don't play shooters much besides TF2 from time to time. My main interests are RPG's, (of the non-J variety), strategy (mostly of the turn based variety) sims, (of non-dollhouse variety) adventure games, platformers, and new interesting games. (Like audiosurf and a lot of stuff we've seen frontpaged lately)
Now for most of these games the PC is the best choice but I also love my DS and Wii because they provide gaming experiences the PC can't give me. The PS3 and 360 interest me the least atm because they don't provide stuff that I'm interested in at the moment but as soon as they have sufficient games that tickle my interest and aren't coming to the PC I'll get those as well.
The PC is my preferred platform because my favourite types of games are on it or play the best on it but also because the amount of user made content (as in mods but also as in indie games) that is available on it.
So please, just stop trolling PC threads. :)
I'm sorry your blog got drug into this, I won't resume this.
For the constructive part:
The PC is still quite popular around here, (The Netherlands) so much so that I don't know any 360 or ps3 owners, 4 wii owners, 2 ps2 owners and 20 PC gamers. That indie games seem to be the best thing to happen to the PC for 2008 is a Good Thing(tm) imho as what I've seen from GDC where some of the most innovative and cool looking games I've ever seen. Most bigger developers don't take risks anymore and go purely for the shiny factor. So maybe 2008 will be the year of the indie game?
