Crisis Core proves Final Fantasy VII should not be remade.
xSledgewick | 12:56 AM on 07.01.2008 12 comments

So, I originally posted this on Square Insider as a reply to another member commenting on a post I made. You can see the original here.

To preface this though I just beat Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core; despite wanting to put it down every second I played after Act IX. I know it's a bit late, but I just went on vacation and got the opportunity to play. In a fury though, after completion, I ran to Square Insider, posted my hate, ranted, and eventually came to find this about Square and Crisis Core.

My post begins...

I really can't explain it. I tried typing a huge explanation, but it was really poorly written and very... convoluted. I can only tell you that it's pretty apparent the "cool factor" and the "nostalgia" were the only parts working for this game.

The "cool factor" is mainly a beginning half of the game thing for me and dried up as soon as the plot fucked itself into oblivion. Angeal fit in pretty ok in the beginning, but as soon as Genesis got to be a bigger character, the story just... it's so dumb.

The "nostalgia" parts were spread pretty thin and really, there's only like two fucking characters that get it the most. Aeirth and Cloud, of course. I also felt for Zack for a lot of the game, but again... as soon as Genesis stepped in, everytime I would be overwhelmed by how much he didn't fit.

This pisses me off due to how I can tell Square views their own game. It's cheap to them; an easy way to gain money. They think it's just plain "cool" to the fans and if they can remake some moments even more "cool" and add some old characters, they'll gain money. They forget the reason why each individual person loved the original game. For me, it was the dark, but hopeful storyline and the colorful characters. The cool for me was when I didn't expect cool shit to happen and it did. Now it's just expected. They've reduced those things I've loved into "awesome lines for those cool characters" and "cool shit to do" to be frank.

The characters felt pretty cliche also, to be fair. Angeal again was awesome in the beginning, but became any other sacrificial mentor. Genesis' persona has been seen at least 17 times before in various movies and games. That one bad guy who retells lines from shit and who wears a lot of plastic.

I don't know what else to say. Most of this was ranting because I'm just so overwhelmingly terrified at what could pop out if Square decides to do a FFVII remake. I prey they don't now. Advent Children was done pretty ok, why can't they just stop and think before they pop something out like they did with AC?

As I said near the end there. This game makes me fear for a FFVII remake. Based on how this game was made, Square is apparently not ready to make this game. Crisis Core was completely made for cash, no doubt.

Fin.

This post may seem random and ill-written and ill-linked, but uh... I just wanted to get some community feedback. How do you chaps feel about Square and all these new compilations and remakes? Are they really focused on these titles still or just cash flow?

obviously square has realized the amount of demand for a final fantasy 7 remake, theyve realized to well that they are making some large sums of money off of fans of the origional, all the while delaying the inevitable
either because they actually don't want to remake it, or because if they did people might think twice about how good the game was.
ever since enix and square teamed up its just been about spin offs and sequels and I'm starting to hate them.

however I feel bad that you actually pay for your psp games.
crack that shit.

not a bad post, but not a great one.

I've long since lost faith in squenix to make any good games at all :| much less remakes... They have gotten steadily worse and worse. Ever since they emerged with Enix they've gone downhill.

Now I'm not saying enix is a bad company, it's a fantastic company, so is square soft. They shoulda stayed that way and then they woulda been winners.

i kinda said the same thing in my blog. Square aint the same. Those companies were better off separate.

Umm.. wouldn't a Final Fantasy VII remake be just Final Fantasy VII, but umm.. prettier?

If there was a Final Fantasy VII remake, they would probably try to shoehorn in the plot elements created between Before Crisis, Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus. It would likely suck pretty bad since I hate the stuff created in DoC that had to be shoved into Crisis Core to 'flesh it out'.

Hell, I always thought LOVELESS was an idol singer on concert tour when I first played FF7 as the camera panned away from Aerith in the opening. :P

Square needs to stop fucking around with all these crap battle systems and just stick to the damn ATB or just make the game pure action RPG, none of that weird FF12 system that try to combine the 2 and fail miserably. Just give me back my ATB or action and we will be all good.

All I know is that FF7 is not that good, and a remake will only be bought by FF7 fans. Like it or not, FF7 fans are a small minority of the gamer market, and for a FF7 remake to make money, it must appeal to a broad market

@Chocobo Knight: That's exactly what I was thinking. DoC and Crisis Core destroyed what I love with all these new "rad" and so-called "awesome" plot elements. They're trying to give the games a style they shouldn't have. Devil May Cry is what I see when I play DoC and Crisis Core.

@King3VBO: I adore Final Fantasy VII, yet I agree with you completely that the market isn't big enough. It's just all these compilations and tech. demos that get me excited and worried all at the same time.

Along with that, I'll say that Crisis Core and DoC may be good when it comes to attracting new people due to how easy the "awesomeness" is to grasp, but... if people want to see what these games stemmed from and Square actually does follow through with a remake... well, it will be infused with the shit that attracted new people.

Does that make sense? Speaking is difficult for me, haha.

Too much drama for a not so great game.
FFVII was a great game, it`s one of the only RPG`s i`ve finished twice, and leveled characters to lvl 99.
And Crysos Core, was a really good game, not too long, nice combat mode, catching story, good graphics for the console, idk it was a really decent game.
The plot for FFVII isn`t one of the best things written in history.
There are reamkes, ad sequels to a lot of games, but only one of two recive this amount of drama and boo boo's as Crysis Core.

I don't fear the FFVII remake. I await it so that it can finally come along and retell the story and retcon a bunch of the convoluted crap from the original that didn't make any sense.

I think that Crisis Core was necessary to pave the way for a remake so that they -could- justify any type of retelling or retcon of the story that comes along. Hell, I'm fairly certain that Squaresoft complained when FF7 was released that they didn't get to put as much in to the game as they wanted.

I think thats where the compilation comes in. Square is finally getting around to telling the story in its entirety using all sorts of media to fill out the whole thing.

Yes, it could be different from the initial game you played all those years ago, but that difference could make it better considering how misunderstood the entire game was at the time despite its popularity.

@DAO-SKIP: I don't think that's fair to say at all. Square was on the decline long before the Enix merger. That started about the time they stopped producing anything but Final Fantasy titles.

Hmmm...

I happend to love FFCC, I thought the story was well done and for they did it just right making it on a portible system. Save anywhere, smaller missions, or stay on the main story line.

Graphics were amazing, story was great, 10/10.
