Halo 1 was a quite nice shooter on the Xbox 1. Well, it was actually the only good exclusive shooter for this platform. Steroid guy in a green armor shooting aliens with some lame 'pew pew' weapons.
Halo 2 was also the same.
Guess what. Halo 3 IS EXACTLY the freakin' same.
When you're using weapons, you feel like shooting from a powerless water pistol. Story is lame. EVERYTHING IS FREAKIN' LAME.
Except the main character, which is looking awesome - is it all that game needs to achieve such a success? It is sad that this area of market is ruled mainly (there are many older gamers playing Halo, but i've never heard 'em while playing online - only screams of 13 year old kids) by kiddies, choosing games with good looking box.
Halo Wars is a sad spin-off, which is not even good. As for console RTS, yes - it's nice. But in the whole area of RTS games - they'll never make good strategy on console, ffs, why they're even trying?
I don't like ANYTHING in Halo. It's boring, not fun, story is not interesting, bla, bla, bla and bla.
WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE SEE IN THIS GAME.
WHAT.
TELL MEAH.
I... i just want to understand.

WHY HALO IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SERIES IN THE LAST DECADE
it's like the super smash brothers of the xbox world, easy to get into, challenging to master.
Also, I really liked the Halo 3 story, really grabbed my attention.
WHAT DO YOU SEE IN THOSE GAMES.
WHAT.
TELL MEAH.
I... I just want to understand.
Ok, seriously? Because a lot of people like the game. I enjoy it. I like Chief, I think the gameplay is fun (and Ive never understood the 'weak' weapons thing, i know of no other fps games with noticeably 'stronger' weapons), and the story works to make for some fun levels.
You dont have to like it. You can hate it if you want. If thats the case, you're never gonna understand why others like it. But that has no effect on you, does it? Go play the games YOU like.
ALso I played a bit of Halo 3 on the 360, still not impressed =\
A lot of people like the Halo games so there must be something good about them. I personally loved Crysis and i know loads of people thought that was mediocre, so there you go.
I'm sorry but this doesn't warrant a blog post. Also, forums.
Whatev, I'll assume you're not...
Topsellers and top quality content are rarely hand in hand, in any medium.
Also, the Halo games happen to be pretty well put together. There are glitches, yes, but nothing especially game breaking. On top of that, its pretty accessible, since controller skills have a lighter learning curve than the good ole M&K (Mostly the K part, I figure)
Not to mention, the depth of features is pretty top notch. Decent enough solo campaign that isn't too hard to plow through, expansive and robust multiplayer, a number of secrets and earned unlockables, vehicle play, a level creation tool for multiplayer and the ability to save replays of not only multiplayer matches, but also the last 30 minutes or so of campaign gameplay.
Never mind that there's isn't much challange, and there isn't some deep well of great characters and interesting story.
1. It isn't broken
2. Its easy to get into and you feel/look like a badass
3. There's alot of different things to do with it
4. And yep, it looks pretty cool.
5. There's lots of people playing it, which keeps the gameplay going
Same could be said about World of Warcraft, Madden, RockBand, and PokeMon. Crazy, right?
I assume its so popular because the Xbox needs exclusives and it's a solid title (eg: plays well and has sustained sequels and spinoffs).
Also, poor worded blog posts with thin arguments are sweet.
I think there's more literature on the Internet about why Halo is good/bad than there is on anything else, and you have to ask us? Read all the 10/10 reviews I hear you thousands of people are the only ones to disagree with if you want a defense of it.
But I think the real question is why after all these years, long after the media shut up about it, you're wondering why a game you find mediocre is successful, and haven't just started on another game.
Also, I'm not a fan. I played through Halo 3's campaign on Legendary with a friend, and never touched it again. Just doesn't tickle my tingler, yanowhaimsayin?
Also, marketing.
Don't even dare to put TF in the smae sentence as GAYlo .
TF is not or ever will be as popular as Halo.
Also, 4ums.
But, I can't resist putting in my two cents on this "blog": PEOPLE LIKE DIFFERENT SHIT.
Personally, while I play the campaign (mainly because I've enjoyed the books a lot, without them the story is WEAK. There are lots of little tidbits you wouldn't get without having read them), I hate the multiplayer. Reason being, I generally don't like games that require more than 1 or 2 headshots to put someone down. Also, I don't like respawn games as I want each life to really matter, people play much more carefully which heightens the intensity for me. It also prevent lame asses from just camping to pick off people trying to get back in the action. I wouldn't have played CoD multiplayer if it wasn't for hardcore S&D.
But just because you don't care for something, doesn't make it shit. Many people *FAIL* to get that point. See what I did there?
I'm going to have to quote SA here, jokingly. Lurk more!
I'm sorry, but I have to agree with De Bloo on this. Putting TF in the same sentence as Halo is a disgrace to Halo ;) ... Okay okay, I joke I know, but honestly TF2 really isnt that great. It doesnt have the same staying power that Halo, COD, or big brother CounterStrike even have.
Maybe not on consoles, but TF2 gets played a hell of a lot on the PC, it's still one, if not THE most popular FPS on the PC.
Millions still play it, so your assumption that is has less staying power than other shooters is invalid, heck even the original TF still gets a few players, over 10 years on.
To end the argument, it's universally considered by neutral parties that TF2 is harder, more team-oriented, and is a deeper game, although it is fairly niche.
Halo is universally accepted as the "frat/popular" shooter, and is easier to just pick up and play, especially since you can system link. Anyone can pick it up and play it, and while there are a ton of serious team/MLG players (I used to be), we can all agree that the majority of Halo fanatics are FFA junkies.
I'd say TF2, from a neutral standpoint (I never got into TF2, just TF, and I stopped being a Halo fan past 2), is a better game, but Halo is more successful, and more fun in short bursts. Apples and Oranges.
MY JAR-BASED KARATE BEGS TO DIFFER.
It had a great atmosphere, fantastic set piece battles, fun levels, and the ring world concept provided for some varied environments.
On top of it all, there was an insanely fun and customizable mutliplayer experience that allowed for up to 16 players on one map using four linked Xboxs.
Now, realize how revolutionary this kind of things was on a console. The first Halo was a great game, and it's really unfortunate that the sequels couldn't live up to its legacy.
Don't be an asshole who hates something just because its popular. If it hadn't been so successful it wouldn't get the amount of flak it receives from people such as yourself.
Holy fucking shit you guys, did you totally miss the part where I said I was joking? Really?
@Mushman
I wont deny that its super popular on PC. But that's also partially due to the fact that it has almost no fucking legit competition on the PC market outside of Counterstrike.
@Silverdragon
If its such a balanced class system why the hell does it keep getting patches? I'm sorry to say it, but alot of people dont think TF2 is that great even compared to its predecessor (which I did like, for the record). It stays strong on the PC community because its a familiar name, very similar to how Halo stays popular on consoles via familiarity. Also the PC community still has a giant hardon over anything Valve makes.
@Magnalon
Yes, its apples and oranges. But throwing it into the category of 'frat game' is kind of a slap in the face to alot of the people who actually play the game, both seriously and for fun.
Let's just agree that people like Halo, and people like TF2, and both are good games. If you would have just said that to begin with people wouldn't have come down on you like a ton of bricks.
If I had to choose a favorite console FPS, Republic Commando would most definitely be it.
@SilverDragon - Tribes 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and the original Call of Duty are my all time favorite team-based FPSs. The support and playerbase for those games has dwindled so I generally don't play them anymore (though Tribes 2 recently got a player-surge of which I am a part!).
I feel these games do the class system just as well or maybe better than TF2 (BF1942, BF2, BF2142 were also very enjoyable), but they're considered outdated. I just wanted to point out that there really are plenty of other amazing team-based objective games to enjoy, even though they're older; they're not dead, though.
@SephirothX - I seriously doubt Valve is continuing to update the game because they felt it was unbalanced. Their content packs are there to keep the game invigorated and fresh. The additions themselves may have balancing tweaks soon after they become live, but the game is generally balanced very well; each class has its purpose and strengths.
@Everyone - I'm sad that this blog is the location for this debate.
Also, I take Madden very seriously, but that's a frat game too.
Sad but true.
