Well Hello There.....

Ah yes, a Star Wars reference of the great Alec Guinness to get your attention!

Greetings Destructoid Community!

I lurked and watched this site for a long time, I was lurking and goofing off back before FNF’s even started. I’ve always loved gaming, and well, I suppose gaming has always loved me. =)

I guess you can say I’m making a return to the gaming world after a very long absence; I even sold all of my consoles. I purchased a PS3 yesterday, and I love it. I had owned an Xbox 360 for many years, and it always left a bad taste in my mouth. I liked the FPS’s that it had to offer (many late nights with the Dtoid crew in Halo3 and CoD4), but I really love platform and strategy games, and nothing ever seemed to quench my thirst on the 360, and if the game was actually decent, the controls always felt so awkward. So the PS3 seemed the logical choice, and I’m rooting for Sony to start making some good decisions to give the PS3 a little stronger foothold than it has, and expand it’s user base, only time will tell however.

You can probably say life got in the way of gaming, and life has brought me back to gaming. With the recent and unexpected passing of my mother, and 1 more semester of college, life has taken some unexpected twists, and forced me to reform from my high roller, successful business owner (Residential Contractor, Furniture/Cabinetry Craftsman), and college student life style, and get back to my roots of being a home body. It’s also opened up my calendar until the spring to leave me with a lot of free time on my hands. So picking something up to keep me entertained, and picking back up where I left off seemed logical.

Along came the purchase of the PS3. I also picked myself up a copy of Killzone2 as from what I had read, that was one of the more popular online titles. I’m a competitive person, and sometimes it gets the best of me, but I like games where I can play online, especially FPS’s and Racing. My competitive nature is probably why I have been so successful in my business adventures. I also love the casual platform/strategy style games.

I suppose what I’m looking for from the PS3 owners of the Dtoid community, are some recommendations on some decent games to pick up to expand my Library, MGS4 is an obvious, but beyond that, I’ve fallen out of the circle in the gaming world in knowing what’s hot and what’s not. I’m headed off this evening to the local game stop to browse through the used selections, and see what I can find. I’m also headed to pick up a Bluetooth Headset. Does anyone out there have any recommendations as for games or a headset that works well? I’m looking to pick up a headset, and 1 or 2 new games tonight.

So what do you guys think? What’s popular for FNF’s and will be for some time to come?

Well, off to fire the BBQ for some 4th of July awesomeness! Nothing beats a black hotdog and a cold beer on the 4th! So you all have a wonderful 4th yourself.

Until next time,
The ole Backwoods Wood Butcher…

Yeah, I saw that BlazBlue was a big deal last night. I also saw taht a lot of people play Socom, and I'll look into Burnout Paradise. I might be able to get it for 10$ out of the local bargain bin.

Welcome. you'll have a good time here.

Welcome to Dtoid.

BlazBlue is indeed pretty big on FNF now. Yesterday we had a pretty big amount of players in Burnout as well. Which was quite random because it wasn't announced in the rotation. There are indeed quite a few Socom players here.

About Platform and Strategy. I'd say get Ratchet and Clank and Valkyria Chronicles. R&C is a great and beautiful game. Same goes for VC.

If I could play only one game on the PS3 it would be MGS4. It's cheap now. I'd get it if I were you.

So basically try to get your hands on some exclusives first. Uncharted, Resistance, MGS4, Ratchet and Clank and Valkyria Chronicles. That'll keep you going I guess.

Have a great 4th of July.

BlazBlue
Socom: Confrontation
Burnout Paradise
Headset

Remind that if you get Socom, you get that spiffy headset too. I believe it's included but if not make sure you get that edition. If you've got some spare change left I'd recommend the PS-Eye as well. It's great for video-chat and Burnout. I use it as a mic, works great but you'd have to get headphones then.

They don't ship it with the Headphones anymore, so it's hard to find. That's what I originally planned to do.

I'll probably just get the PS3 headset. Then buy Socom/Burnout used, get them cheap. Grab a copy of Blazblue.

Welcome :)

As people here have already suggested the obvious, you could the Playstation Store for all the mini games and other things. Flower, Flow, Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, PixelJunk Monsters, Pixeljunk Racers, Pixeljunk Eden. Little Big planet is good. Mirror's Edge too.

Sorry to hear of your mother's passing. :(

.. but congrats on the PS3!

Regarding games, Killzone 2 was a good choice and the online seems to be maintaining it's popularity. Battlefield 1943 is coming next week to PSN (and the price is under $20.) and it looks like it might offer decent online play and be a good "interim" online game until some of the heavy hitters coming in the fall (primarily MAG I guess).
SOCOM still seems popular (though I hated all the server problems in the beta and haven't bought it), and I hear that there are still problems - but SOCOM fans are rather used to that. Many seem to be wanting to switch to MAG when it comes out as MAG is being done by Zipper who did the original SOCOM games. Slant 6 did the most recent SOCOM: Confrontation game and the feedback hasn't been overly positive.

An older game that is still immensely popular online is Warhawk. There is ground battle, tanks, jeeps and planes. The teamplay is fantastic with clear objectives and solid strategies. The planes are INCREDIBLE to fly even if you're not into flying games. The game is a lot of fun and the rumoured Starhawk will likely be a huge hit so starting out with Warhawk isn't a bad idea if you're into team based games with a lot of stuff going on (no campaign mode though). The servers are almost always busy still (almost 2 years from release)

The Resistance series is also worth a look. R1 can be bought pretty cheap and the campaign is really good (you can also play splitscreen co-op which is a blast!). Much of the online play has switched over to R2 but they changed the competitive mode and it's not as popular as Killzone. The co-op online is a lot of fun though (and can be played splitscreen online if you have a couch buddy!), and the campaign is fun for R2.

... and yeah, the PS3 headset is well worth the cost - it's nice to be able to mute yourself at times! :)

I seem to remember, Destructoid used to have a 'Warhawk Wednesday'.

I might switch out Socom for Warhawk.

P.S. <whispering> don't tell anyone here I said this, but inFAMOUS was a pretty fun PS3 exclusive too. Worth at least a rent.

Welcome to Dtoid. We do indeed love our PS3s here. I personally sleep beside mine every night. The heat from it's Cell Process keeps me nice and warm. :-)

ok, just snatched up the last copy of BlazBlue that Gamestop had....also grabbed Warhawk and BurnoutParadise. Picked myself up a headset as well...

Lets get the party started
woodbutcherdan84's Destructoid Blog
On a side note, Blazblue is the only Special/Limited/Gold/uber edition of anything I have ever purchased. *lol*

Now the only thing I need is to go out and pick up my HDTV...I'm gonna wait a few weeks on it, hopefully I can catch one on sale or something. If not I'm just gonna pick up a 32" Vizio.

welcome but go fuck yourself for introducing yourself on independence day. you need to be getting drunk and smelling gunpowder or you're a goddam coward. happy independence day bitch.
grafkhun's Destructoid Blog
I'm still a lurker, well at least on the blog side of things, but welcome. All the great PS3 games have been recommended already and I see you got some. Anyways, about your lack of a HDTV, a small vizio HDTV is a good bet like you were thinking about. I have a 22 inch Vizio and it's awesome, just have to sit kind of close to it.
woodbutcherdan84's Destructoid Blog
@Grafkhun

Yeah, I'm thinking of Picking up the 32" Vizio at wal-mart, you can get it under 500$ now. I'm just gonna wait a few weeks and watch for a sale or something, or maybe I'll get a cupon in the mail or something for 10% off or something.

@QRAZE

Nice attempt at trolling, but I sense failure of Epic Proportions. I think I will begin a charity drive to get you your first hooker. I'm sure many will chip in, you will calm down a lot and all the Anxiety from the anticipation of your 'first time' will be calmed.
