Buy one of the half-damage things and use it on the Wily stage where you fight all 8 bosses. It's still in effect if you die and restart the stage.
The spike absorber thing and Beat (picks you up when you fall in a pit) might also help you get past some of the rough parts leading up to Wily.
If you need to harvest screws to buy all this, I believe Sheep Man's stage has like 60-some screws each time you beat it, plus anything that enemies drop.
