Using a PS3 controller on your PC
whiteskwirl | 1:43 AM on 02.05.2009 24 comments

So I was sick of using my keyboard to play old SNES and Genesis games on emulators. It's just not the same, so I was thinking of either getting a PC gamepad or a USB adapter for my SNES controller. Then I thought, hey, my PS3 controller uses a USB cable to connect to the system to recharge. Maybe I can use it on my PC.

I did a quick search on the internet and immediately turned up some instructions for doing just that. So I thought I would share this in case there is anyone else out there who didn't know about this.

It requires some software, which you can download here: http://dl.qj.net/SIXAXIS-driver-for-PC-Tools-and-Utilities-PlayStation-3/pg/12/fid/11679/catid/518. There's instructions on that page, but I will reiterate them here.

1. Download the file on the page I linked to above.
2. Unzip/unpack it.
3. Install the libusb-win32-filter-bin-0.1.10.1.exe file.
4. Plug in your Sixaxis controller into a USB port on your PC via the USB cable you use to recharge your controller.
5. Run the ps3sixaxis_en.exe file one time.
6. Press the PS home button

And that's it. Worked for me anyway. I've used it on the GENS Genesis emulator and the ZSNES Super Nintendo emulator. You just configure the controls in the program as you would any gamepad. I haven't tested it on anything else and I don't know if a Dualshock controller will work or not, though I don't see why it wouldn't. I'm using Windows XP as well. It's supposed to work on Vista as well, but I haven't tried it on anything else.

Anyway, hope some of you find this useful. Enjoy!

Thats pretty cool. Only problem is I don't use emulators. If you find out thins works for some FPSs, I'd be interested.

Or like action/adventure games. Basically anything not an emulator.

I found this out awhile ago, quite a nifty trick. I used it to play left 4 dead splitscreen on the pc with a friend when the demo was exploitable.

Wow I didn't know this. This is great actually, as there are a few PC games out there that you know would just feel better with a controller in hand.

You should mention the fact that these drivers will not work for a 64-bit operating system such as XP 64 bit or Vista 64 bit.

So if you're like me and use one of those, you're out of luck. These are for 32-bit only.

@agentmoo: I've never used a gamepad on a pc, but XP recognized it the same as when you plug in a USB drive or a printer, where as soon as you plug it in the little speech bubble comes up saying what you just connected. Also, PS3 controller will be listed in the game controller section in control panel.

I have Vista 64 bit, and it hasn't been working. Fuck. I thought I was in 32 bit mode.

I will definitely try this later. I hate using the keyboard for SNES games.

Use the GameSaike drivers. They're much better.

I usually use my PS3 controller for emulators and the occasional old-school PC game.

I've been doing this for a couple months now and I love it. Works like a charm. The only thing that sucks is whenever you unplug the PS3 controller from your PC, it will turn your PS3 on.

oh and if you have linux just plug the thing in and it'll work.
you can also use it in bluetooth but that needs some additional software

Protip:

Install you favorite flavor of linux and you can now emulate your game while playing on this big screen AND with a Dualshock3. Or you could also just hook up your pc to you HDTV. I just prefer installing linux wich will also give you region free DVD playing.

I'm debating on whether or not to get the PS3 Street Fighter IV Fightstick and PC SFIV since it doesn't seem like that version will have any multiplayer. I may get the Fightstick anyway to tinker with it's mod-ibility anyway.

this doesnt work at all.
when I run the sixaxis thing, nothing happens, and then I press the PS button like stated, and my ps3 turns on, and nothing happens here on my computer, the controller ceases to work.
controls wont work, even though the sound signalling a USB device has been connected\disconnected DOES sound when the controller is plugged in.
whats wrong?
