That's what this Asshole says. Don Reisinger, who I had never heard of before, seems to think Microsoft will actually topple Nintendo in the family and casual market during this console generation. I have to say, I'll probably never read his shit blog again.

In essence, Microsoft and Nintendo are trying to appeal to the same market in two distinctly different ways. Microsoft wants to attract consumers by offering well-known franchises and providing the new gaming crowd with a host of fun and entertaining games. Meanwhile, Nintendo's main selling point this time around is its hardware. If the Wii was just another gaming console with old-style controls, we'd be calling it a Gamecube. And if memory serves me correctly, the Gamecube was quite a flop.

Unfortunately for Nintendo, I simply don't believe hardware will take the day in the bitter battle for the family. Sure, it has been successful in bringing a unique experience to homes. But as I've mentioned before, it simply doesn't have the software behind it to overcome the rest of the industry.

First off, the part about using well-known franchises. WTF? Seriously, what do they have? I would be the first guy to tell you of the beauty of Viva Pinata, but that was pretty much a commercial flop. It just didn't sell well. And the TV show is far from well-known. In fact, I put it on for my kid one day, and let me tell you, it Sucks. And don't even mention the upcoming Party Animals party game. As we have seen with Fusion Frenzy, there just isn't much of a market for 4 player party games on the Xbox 360.

You could bring up Banjo-Kazooie, a well-known franchise with a good pedigee. In fact, I myself once enjoyed both of those games. But that was like 9 years ago. I honestly have no interest in playing a new one, especially if I'm going to be collecting shit all fucking day for a week. Perhaps it will attract new people, but I would seriously doubt this.

As for the Xbox 360 Arcade, who would honestly want it? It's pretty clear that the non-hard drive 360 wasn't nearly as successful as the Pro and Elite versions. Why would I care for one now? All it has is a big memory card and some free fucking arcade games. Who really cares? Sure, it's technically a good deal, only $30 more for a system that it far superior to the Wii in terms of processing power and functionality, but no hard drive.

I applaud the efforts of MS to try and get some of the family market share, but does anyone really think this is going to happen? Nintendo owns the Family market, and of course, the Japanese market.

Microsoft should just stick to their guns here. They don't really have much of a choice. They will never be as big as Sony was in it's heyday. They lack popularity in Japan, which means they will never be big on traditional Japanese RPGs, and really, who cares? They should remain the place to be for great shooters and PC style games.

As Sony taught us with the PSP, you just don't fuck with Nintendo when it comes to family-friendly and casual gaming.
