I was thrilled to see the VC releases today. I downloaded Startropics the minute I heard it was released. This was one of the first games I ever played, and I can remember how much I loved it. The weirdest thing is that my mom beat it before me (crazy, huh). Anyways before I get to the first dungeon, I noticed something odd. In the original game the first weapon you get in the game is a yoyo, but on the VC version of the game you get a "Star".

This is from the original NES game

And this is from the VC game

Whats the point NOA? Is it less offensive? because the sprite of the yoyo seems unchanged. Is the word "star" easier to put in the game? Because the word "yoyo" and "star" are the same amount of letters. Heck, Is it a homage to "Super Mario"?

I mean why change it? Because, lets face it, Most of the people that will download it will be fans that played the game before. Why not keep it the same for them. It really doesn't bug me that they changed the yoyo (Well, it bugged me enough to blog about it) but it seems like a pointless effort on Nintendo's part.

Now I know what your thinking, "This isn't nearly important enough to blog about." and to that I say, "you know what, I guess your right, but I'm doing it anyways."

Either way it goes the fat shirtless guy with facial hair is still creepy.
my ancestors used the yoyo as a hunting weapon like how sukeban deka does it. It must be a something to do with the translations and stuff. They must've used the original japanese rom of the game and did a retranslation and that just got past NOA's QC.
Wow, this has GOT to be the most important blog I have ever seen in my ENTIRE LIFE!!!1

9 out of 10 firetrucks
That picture gives me the impression that I'm probably going to get raped by Ron Jeremy in the near future.
@ Redzie
I thought the same thing but the wiki page says it was only released in America and Europe, so i don't think there ever was a japanese rom of the game. but what do I know.

@ 007
Greatest. Post. Ever.
made my night.
Yo-yo's aren't cool anymore. Stars are the new hip thing. They're just trying to keep things hip and fresh to appeal to kids these days.

Also, yo-yo's are offensive to people who suck at them. I can't walk the dog to save my life, therefore I don't want yo-yo's in my games reminding me that I suck.
I agree.
Maybe... they put up a PAL version or something? I dunno, I can't see why they'd go and change that line.

Also your mom beat Star Tropics? That's hardcore right thar. I remember my mom would stay up on the NES after I went to bed, but I don't think she could ever beat Bowser in SMB.
That really makes no sense.
isn't that saddam hussein?
@Linuxguy:
LOL.
It is possibly, y'know... Jesus Christ IT IS! Nintendo is incorporating a terrorist dictator retard guy... Thing... Into our games now. Joy. Does Saddam have any business with YoYo's or Stars? o.0
STTTAAAARRRRSSSS!!
Although some what unrelated, does anyone know what they did about the letter? I haven't sat down to replay it yet.
Maybe this is a hint for an unlockable second quest in the Virtual Console version... I can already picture it.
