My solution for console piracy? The USB dongle.
weedgan | 9:14 AM on 02.21.2008 9 comments

Piracy in console gaming IS an issue.

These days you can find game's on bittorent for download even before they hit retail, this could present a bigger threat to people making these games for 360, ps3 and even the Wii.

Mod chips pretty much override the following.

CD keys

and

Write protection.

Console games have never tried using a CD key for each copy of a game put out, and in all honestley CD keys are not a very effective way to prevent piracy.

But one thing that DOES work very well with software put out these days is the USB dongle.

This, if you've never seen or heard of it before, basiclly is a key, where it enables the software to be installed. Some of you might be familar with music software such as Pro-Tools and such, these all require actual physical hardware (the USB dongle) to be installed and some programs even require it to still be inserted while the program runs.

There are even USB keys in existance that have a led screen and read you a number off to put in for your software. While alot of this stuff is not compltley hack proof, it gets pretty damn close because it is actual hardware, instead of just code.

So my main question is, Why has this not been tried with the console market?

Now I'm aware of the almost immidate response most people would give me, "Production cost would be too much." Well, that's wrong because produceing these things in mass would not cost much at all. And considering how many more copies you could sell if you're game had less chance of being pirated, I think it would defintley be worth it.

I work at a company that buys A LOT of USB keys right from SafeNet, and really It saves us money instead of costing us more in the long run.

I Just hope this idea is put into use in the future, because with the right steps, it wont matter how much you mod your console, if you dont have the right dongle then the game will not run, plain and simple.

It wouldn't be much harder for a mod-chip manufacturer to simply add some code into their chip which emulates the USB dongle, just like groups have done for Cubase and Protools. It didn't work for Cubase/Protool and it won't work for consoles.

You can find both of those programs on any half-decent torrent site. It's not going to happen for consoles.

because this is an absolutley stupid idea, unless they are gonna pack the whole game on each dongle. every time I wanna play a game i got to put the game in and the usb key and it would lead to console installs where i have to enter a keycode from the usb key. Rental market would die, used game sales suffer and the casual market that each company is vying for is thrown another hurdle to jump over further pushing console gaming into the realm of pc complexity

PC yeah, of course, you can run drive emulators.

Console, not that easy.

Also if they could make a dongle, that wirelessly transmits a signal back to the console, that would work also.

Wouldn't work, consoles work on simplicity, every bit you add on to make things harder is just going to push consumers away.

Yeah, but it would be great for the devs, rental market and used game market kill the cash that actually comes into the publisher and developer.

I don't know if it would really turn away customers. You still have to put the disc in you know, the USB port is right in front of you.

FUCK. NO. Nobody wants to deal with dongles to run a piece of software. So I have to put a disc in, and also put a different USB key in for each game? Fuck that. Seriously. Fuck it hard in the ass.

I think that firmware upgrades should be enough to kill console pirates. If the firmware upgrades are automatically part of newer games than pirates would be forced to upgrade and if the console makers just did a little research with the hottest mod chips I'm sure they could reverse engineer enough to come up with some kind of lockout
