Introducing the TeraDisk; Half As Powerful as SterlingDisc, Still Can't Hold All of MGS4
water lymon | 12:32 AM on 03.10.2008 15 comments

All of the SUPER HD BLOOM™ and different tones of David Hayter yelling "Metal Gear?" as an old man will take up a terabyte on its own.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but using some mirrors, splitters, and surprisingly simple logic, someone has created a TeraDisk. This TeraDisk is basically a simple disc which modifies its write technology to allow it to hold 1TB of data, though its not exactly the record. Though most discs can hold at most 4.7/8.5 GB of data, and a BluRay disc can acclaimedly hold 50GB, those discs have 1/8 laters respectively. The TeraDisk boasts about 200 fucking layers. Jesus.

If you're wondering why this hasn't been done before, its because of the limitations of the average disc. You see, a disc has data read by light passing through it and reading each layer, each layer holding about 5GB each. Problem is, as light passes through the disc, it loses intensity and becomes distorted, which is why discs being scratched is a problem for data on the outermost layers. I'm hoping it becomes the new standard for video games, because the developing company says it will be cheap and readily available by 2010.

Hm. That sounds cool. Technology is one of few places where being smaller is a good thing.

This has been kicking around since August, pretty sure.

Still, I don't understand how they do it. It's explained in the article that right now 8 layers is the most you can have on a disk, then it says that this one has 200? Make up your mind, is more than 8 impossible or not.

Screw it, bed time.

Gimme a huge SSD drive, super-fast internet and digital distribution. I'll be set for life. And obese.

Horribly obese.

Protein coated discs, if we ever re-engineer rhodopsin correctly, would be bad-ass. 50TB might be enough to hold all of the variations of Snake saying "huh" or grumbling while the codec displays an ellipses.

Campbell: Snake, you're totally fucked! They're coming from all sides!

Snake: Huh

Campbell: Use the fork you found as a bayonet on your pistol!

Snake: ...

Sounds like a good idea, if they can beef up scratch-protection and make this affordable.
