Help Me Help You: Lemon Needs Photoshop Learnings
water lymon | 1:58 PM on 08.16.2007 46 comments

Alright, I'm just going to dive right into this one.

I suck at Photoshop. Like, I'm not good at it. At all. As evidenced by my extensive portfolio of sucking (there, I did the blow job joke for you) I can only add text to photos, while occasionally adding strokes and shadows to already beautifully produced text fonts. But unfortunately, without using the magnetic selection and distort tools, thats about the best I can do.

But I want to be better.

So I need your help, Destructoid. I need you guys to help me by, if possible, helping me get better at Photoshop. Don't email me a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a specific picture, but if possible, link me to any tutorials or any sort of book, or ANYTHING at all that you use to learn how to use Photoshop or even just to create digital images. I feel like pursuing a career in digital/graphic design in a way, and just anything that could be used to be better at this not only for myself, but for a career, would be just great.

Now I'll step away from the mic to give the tl;dr version for Kif.
Give me graphic design (Photoshop, preferrably) books tutorials.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

cool man, as long as you're teaching yourself photoshop, why not learn aftereffect? they are somewhat similar and you can get much better jobs with aftereffects, as not that many people know it. heres a few links

www.tutorialized.com

I use this site all the time, its got tons of stuff on it for every program imagineable

also I'd recommend actually getting books on photoshop, they will teach you a lot about the basics

lemon for really good tutorials on photoshop especially when it comes to design, I recommend http://www.cgsociety.org/ industry professionals go to this site all the time, they even host online classes, and have a ton of free tutorials on their forums. You can even build your own lil portfolio page on the site and get input from the community, I was thinking of recreating my profile.

You know what is really sad about this? I was reading it, and then I skipped down to see the comment, and saw the tl;dr version and my name, and I thought "Goddamn I am an asshole on the internet".

So I read it all the way through again just for you electro. Don't worry, be happy.

I don't know shit about Photoshop though, so I'm useless here. I use Pootato for some stuff I do, but that's it really.

The books (Classroom in a book is what I used) on Photoshop are a godsend.

Have you seen the shit I post on the front page? I'm probably the worst add-text-to-photo-er on the staff.

I suck ass at Photoshop too, so I feel your pain.

I'm in about the same boat, but I can change colors and tints, as well as transform stuff pretty good. Need to know that?

Personally, I'm trying to tile an animated .gif and then crop some of that, so I can make a blog banner with a moving background. And all of that needs to be in the back layer. If anybody can help with that (Or recommend a better program for the job) I'm all ears.

actually electro, the best resource is this set of two books by trish and chris myer - tutorials are good but to really know the program you need to understand how it all works together, not just how to make a cock fly across the screen. although that's definitely useful. check out this link

it is a little expensive, I know, but seriously it taught me more than a three month class I took. it is like the aftereffects bible

also, like mentioned before, the aftereffects section on www.cgsociety.org is an excellent resource

Fuck all the tutorial bullshit.

If you want to learn how to use Photoshop, do what I did, take a paying job for it. You learn shit a lot quicker when you're under a deadline, and anyone that's ever accepted a complicated graphic design job will tell you, you bust your ass to make shit look good.

Granted, you'll still have to read the tutorials, but shit will make sense if you're under a deadline...

TRUST ME.

I cut my teeth on Illustrator for the job I hold today. I didn't know dick about it, still got hired and now I use it constantly.

True story.

My previous job was training people how to edit video, do motion graphics, design DVD's (!), and do graphic design for print and video. I never once cracked open a single book on Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, or Combustion. I had to for Avid because Avid sucks dick. AVID SUCKS DICK. DO NOT BELIEVE ANYONE PEDDLING YOU SHIT THAT SAYS OTHERWISE. THEY THINK THEY'RE MEGA-HOLLYWOOD PEOPLE, but in reality hold $10 an hour internships for a living.

If you want to learn After Effects, my place to start for total beginners is Creativecow.

http://www.creativecow.net

They have REALLY simple tutorials that don't overwhelm. Handing someone a copy of AFX is like handing you the keys to an aircraft carrier. You know you can do cool shit with it, but you don't know what thing does what. It's really intimidating at first.

To learn After Effects, watch TV and find something that isn't strictly just video that you'd like to emulate.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=QuQJL6m4y9s

I did these by watching something on TV and copying it's look outright in many cases.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=3ZQQpurZmDk

I did this one in Combustion and Premiere after watching a bunch of old Disney educational shorts.

Like Grim said, get a book, preferably a thin one that doesn't treat you like an idiot. The Library has a good selection for free. Also, the internet is a big place, I'm sure someone else knows how to Photoshop.
