There is this thing, it's called Desura. And I'm gonna tell you about it and why you should use it.
What is Desura? Desura is a Digital Distribution service brought to you by the bros at ModDB.
I already use Steam/Xfire/Whatever EA's DDS is/etc. What is the difference?! Well, this is the best part. This is mainly meant for Mods and Indie games!
So does it work just like Steam? Instant downloads and updates Hell yes. It's quite the cool kid on the block right now.
Sounds SUUUUUUUUUUUPER convenient, what else is Desura's goal? To strengthen the Mod community (Within and out of ModDB) and allow a easy medium for developers to contact their consumers.
I'm totes excited, bra. How do I get started? Wellllllllll, it is actually in "Private" beta right now, but you can easily get invited. All you do is sign up at ModDB and then email support@desura.com saying something like "Desura: Invite please!" and you'll usually get the invite very quickly! After you get invited, follow the link provided and login and download!
Thanks, you're awesome and amazing and you're my gosh darn savior
Yeah, no problem.
Okay, here is why you should use this...
• Direct download and installation
• Automatic Mod Updates
• Talk to the mod devs themselves
• Grow closer (so close) as a community
• Become exposed to some awesome independently developed video games and mods!
• Sexy look
• Why the hell not?
Now here is some official stuff...
In case you have been wondering why updates from ModDB staff have been a little slow lately, it is because the team has been busy working on a secret project codenamed Desura. While Desura is far from complete and far from perfect, it is time to stop working in silence and to start inviting select teams and members to the private beta we are launching today. Desura (like Steam, D2D, Impulse, GamersGate etc) is a digital distribution service for PC gamers. Unlike these platforms however which are just shops with little to no interaction between the community and the content available, we aim to bring the power and openess of ModDB to digital distribution. We hope to achieve this in three ways: Developer driven We don't make games ourselves, so we are entirely focused on helping game developers and publishers show off their wares. All tools and functionality provided by Desura to game developers, are provided to empower them to create a better game, and share its features in all their glory with the Desura community. Developers control the flow of news, images, videos and content through their profiles - we don't put up walls and barriers.
Community run Every member of the Desura community can post comments, submit reviews and upload screenshots. We are not some mysterious editor in an ivory tower controlling content - it's anybody who can put pen to paper. Our screenshots aren't limited to some airbrushed press releases - they're taken by the gamers who want to make themselves heard.
User made content There are plenty of great free mods and user made addons out there for games, which few know about and even fewer can install. Being able to customize your games is at the heart of everything Desura does, and we aim to make user made content as accessible as possible. From simple maps through to entire conversions and even whole new games, we hope to put what you want to play at your fingertips.

If you would like an invitation to the private beta, please post a comment here. Mod and indie game teams, if you would like to release or sell your game using Desura please contact us to discuss. We hope this is the first step to creating a platform which gives all developers on ModDB the opportunity to release their content to millions of gamers. We have worked damn hard and though a ton of work remains to be done, we hope you are as excited as us by this news. As always, please post your questions and I will endeavor to answer them, as I am sure you have many.
