About Me
OMG GAMES.

I'm a student in Manchester over here in the always sunny UK. I can juggle, like cats and can't say the alphabet backwards very fast.

The Podcastle is sexy, listen to it.

Games have become a backward-looking medium. Because game designers rely on the language of cinema, they have not sufficiently developed a new form of storytelling based on the language of video games. - Daniel Radosh 28/09/07

Quick Question: If Radiohead made Bioshock, how much would you pay?
wardrox | 4:37 AM on 10.04.2007 11 comments

After the revelation of Radiohead's next album “In Rainbows” being sold for a price you choose I got thinking: how well would this work for the games industry? Are the people who buy games willing to support the industry they love, or would they just leach it for all it's worth and leave it in a gutter somewhere?

For example, with a game like Bioshock, how much would you pay (hindsight is allowed)? I know I wouldn't pay the full asking price, however I would pay at least half, around the £20 ($40) mark. This is how much I would pay for a Starwars box set, and so for things which give me this level of joy, this is the price I will pay. How much would you pay? If anything.

Be honest, we're all friends here.

I'm paying radiohead a dollar per song. I still download Virtual Console games when I know I could get the ROMs for free, so I suppose I'm already participating in a little voluntary purchase program.

That's deep Wardrox...

Honestly, cereally, I would have paid $60 for it, in foresight and hindsight. I knew it was going to be amazing. For other games though, I would probably "test drive" them for free, and then go back and pay however much I felt would be appropriate.

I was thinking myself that a "pay at the end" system might be better. I know I would love that in the cinema.

I'd pay the full 60 for bioshock for sure. As for other games, I probably wouldn't pay more then 30 if possible and yes that includes the haloz.

I think what radiohead is doing with their new album is awsome. I plan on waiting for the retail release so I can buy that box set I keep hearing about.

I'd make $40 my price for most releases I'm excited about and try every other game for free... but that would really hurt small studios.

I gave them about 9 dollars for the download last night. Finally, an opportunity to pay 0 dollars for something, and anonymously to boot, but I couldn't bring myself to totally rip them off. They are relying pretty heavily on the inherent decency in people and I think it is working well for them. They are getting tremendous press for it and I imagine tons of respect as well.

I can't wait for next Tuesday.

Oh, and BioShock? It's worth the 70 bucks I paid for it. I've played it through twice, will eventually play a third time, and had one of the most memorable experiences with any entertainment medium I've had in my life. Well worth the money I'd say.

Radiohead sucks and I will never give them any money. Bioshock rules and I think the 60 bucks I paid for it was worth the money seeing as how I'll probably be playing through it for a third time in the near future.
