The 82nd annual Academy Awards are just around the corner, you know what that means – Wild Speculation! Here is the list of nominees along with my own personal choices for whom I want to win and who is probably going to win. And the nominees are… Best Picture “Avatar” “The Blind Side” “District 9″ “An Education” “The Hurt Locker” “Inglourious Basterds” “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” “A Serious Man” “Up” “Up in the Air” Whom I Want To Win: Despite heavy competition, I’m going to be cheering on the animated underdog, Up. I’ve waited years for an animated movie to win best picture since Beauty and the Beast and I think Up just might be that movie. Who’s Going To Win: If Up doesn’t win, then my guess would be The Hurt Locker. My worst nightmare would be if Avatar won, in which case I’ll lose all faith in mankind. Best Direction “Avatar” — James Cameron “The Hurt Locker” — Kathryn Bigelow “Inglourious Basterds” — Quentin Tarantino “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” — Lee Daniels “Up in the Air” — Jason Reitman Whom I Want To Win: My personal preference would be Kathryn Bigelow. I would have gone with Tarantino, but I wasn’t too impressed with Inglourious Basterds. Who’s Going To Win: Kathryn Bigelow in all likelihood. Although perhaps James Cameron’s innovations in technology will put him over, but considering that he already won, it seems unlikely. Actor in a Leading Role Jeff Bridges in “Crazy Heart” George Clooney in “Up in the Air” Colin Firth in “A Single Man” Morgan Freeman in “Invictus” Jeremy Renner in “The Hurt Locker” Whom I Want To Win: This is a tough one, but I think I’ll go with Jeremy Renner, if only because The Hurt Locker was that awesome. Who’s Going To Win: Jeff Bridges would be my guess. Though I haven’t seen Crazy Heart yet, I’ve heard good things. Actress in a Leading Role Sandra Bullock in “The Blind Side” Helen Mirren in “The Last Station” Carey Mulligan in “An Education” Gabourey Sidibe in “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” Meryl Streep in “Julie & Julia” Whom I Want To Win: Gabourey Sidbe, I know that seeing Oprah’s name might have turned some of you away, but Precious was really good, and so was she. Who’s Going To Win: I’d go with Gabourey Sidbe if I was a betting man. Which I am. Coincidently, would anybody mind lending me a couple of grand, see, I owe these guys… Actor in a Supporting Role Matt Damon in “Invictus” Woody Harrelson in “The Messenger” Christopher Plummer in “The Last Station” Stanley Tucci in “The Lovely Bones” Christoph Waltz in “Inglourious Basterds” Whom I Want To Win: Christopher Waltz, because he managed to get me through Tarantino’s longwinded dialogue. Who’s Going To Win: Christopher Waltz, because he managed to get everyone else through Tarantino’s longwinded dialogue. Actress in a Supporting Role Penélope Cruz in “Nine” Vera Farmiga in “Up in the Air” Maggie Gyllenhaal in “Crazy Heart” Anna Kendrick in “Up in the Air” Mo’Nique in “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” Whom I Want To Win: Mo’Nique. Seriously, go see Precious. Who’s Going To Win: Mo’Nique. C’mon, at least read Push. Writing (Adapted Screenplay) “District 9” — Written by Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell “An Education” — Screenplay by Nick Hornby “In the Loop” — Screenplay by Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci, Tony Roche “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” — Screenplay by Geoffrey Fletcher “Up in the Air” — Screenplay by Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner Whom I Want To Win: It’s about damn time a Sci-Fi film won something other then special effects, GO District 9! Who’s Going To Win: I’m thinking the academy is going to go with Clooney on this one and give Up in the Air the nod. Alien discrimination is wrong! Writing (Original Screenplay) “The Hurt Locker” — Written by Mark Boal “Inglourious Basterds” — Written by Quentin Tarantino “The Messenger” — Written by Alessandro Camon & Oren Moverman “A Serious Man” — Written by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen “Up” — Screenplay by Bob Peterson, Pete Docter, Story by Pete Docter, Bob Peterson, Tom McCarthy Whom I Want To Win: Tarantino’s dialogue was a bridge to nowhere, so let’s give some love to Up for fitting so much emotion into just the opening scene. Who’s Going To Win: Most likely The Hurt Locker, though maybe A Serious Man will surprise me. Animated Feature Film “Coraline” “Fantastic Mr. Fox” “The Princess and the Frog” “The Secret of Kells” “Up” Whom I Want To Win: Do you really have to ask? Who’s Going To Win: I swear to God if Up doesn’t win I’m going to throw a baby off the Golden Gate bridge. Art Direction “Avatar” — Art Direction: Rick Carter and Robert Stromberg; Set Decoration: Kim Sinclair “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” — Art Direction: Dave Warren and Anastasia Masaro; Set Decoration: Caroline Smith “Nine” — Art Direction: John Myhre; Set Decoration: Gordon Sim “Sherlock Holmes” — Art Direction: Sarah Greenwood; Set Decoration: Katie Spencer “The Young Victoria” — Art Direction: Patrice Vermette; Set Decoration: Maggie Gray Whom I Want To Win: Hmmm… Tough choice, but I’m going to go with Avatar. Who’s Going To Win: Avatar most likely, though Nine was very pretty. Cinematography “Avatar” — Mauro Fiore “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” — Bruno Delbonnel “The Hurt Locker” — Barry Ackroyd “Inglourious Basterds” — Robert Richardson “The White Ribbon” — Christian Berger Whom I Want To Win: Honestly, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Who’s Going To Win: I’m going to say either The Hurt Locker or Avatar. Costume Design “Bright Star” — Janet Patterson “Coco before Chanel” — Catherine Leterrier “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” — Monique Prudhomme “Nine” — Colleen Atwood “The Young Victoria” — Sandy Powell Whom I Want To Win: I’m a sucker for period pieces, so The Young Victoria. Who’s Going To Win: The Young Victoria, because the Academy is a sucker for period pieces. Documentary (Feature) “Burma VJ” “The Cove” “Food, Inc.” “The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers” “Which Way Home” Whom I Want To Win: I’ve only seen one of these, The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers. Who’s Going To Win: From what I here The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers is in the lead right now. Documentary (Short Subject) “China’s Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province” “The Last Campaign of Governor Booth Gardner” “The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant” “Music by Prudence” “Rabbit à la Berlin” Whom I Want To Win: Weird, I’ve seen all of the short documentaries, but only one of the feature length documentaries. Hmmm… I’m going go with China’s Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province, don’t see this film if you love children. Who’s Going To Win: I would be shocked if China’s Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province didn’t come home with the gold. Film Editing “Avatar” — Stephen Rivkin, John Refoua and James Cameron “District 9” — Julian Clarke “The Hurt Locker” — Bob Murawski and Chris Innis “Inglourious Basterds” — Sally Menke “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” — Joe Klotz Whom I Want To Win: I think District 9, it had the perfect length and I could actually comprehend the action scenes. Plus that Mech was epic. Who’s Going To Win: Avatar, because James Cameron is a dick. Foreign Language Film “Ajami” — Israel “El Secreto de Sus Ojos” — Argentina “The Milk of Sorrow” — Peru “Un Prophète” — France “The White Ribbon” — Germany Whom I Want To Win: I’ll be honest; I haven’t seen any of these. Who’s Going To Win: The one that sounds the funniest? Makeup “Il Divo” — Aldo Signoretti and Vittorio Sodano “Star Trek” — Barney Burman, Mindy Hall and Joel Harlow “The Young Victoria” — Jon Henry Gordon and Jenny Shircore Whom I Want To Win: Star Trek, because it’s Star Trek. Who’s Going To Win: The Young Victoria, period pieces are always an Academy favorite. Music (Original Score) “Avatar” — James Horner “Fantastic Mr. Fox” — Alexandre Desplat “The Hurt Locker” — Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders “Sherlock Holmes” — Hans Zimmer “Up” — Michael Giacchino Whom I Want To Win: Up has one of the best orchestral scores of any movie I’ve ever seen. Who’s Going To Win: Most likely Up for its catchy, yet subtle score. Music (Original Song) “Almost There” from “The Princess and the Frog” Music and Lyric by Randy Newman “Down in New Orleans” from “The Princess and the Frog” Music and Lyric by Randy Newman “Loin de Paname” from “Paris 36” Music by Reinhardt Wagner Lyric by Frank Thomas “Take It All” from “Nine” Music and Lyric by Maury Yeston “The Weary Kind (Theme from Crazy Heart)” from “Crazy Heart” Music and Lyric by Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett Whom I Want To Win: After Enchanted got robbed, The Princess and the Frog needs to settle the score. I really can’t decide which song I want to win, so I’ll go with either one. Who’s Going To Win: The Academy has a history of hating good music, so I’m thinking “The Weary Kind.” Short Film (Animated) “French Roast” Fabrice O. Joubert “Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty” Nicky Phelan and Darragh O’Connell “The Lady and the Reaper (La Dama y la Muerte)” Javier Recio Gracia “Logorama” Nicolas Schmerkin “A Matter of Loaf and Death” Nick Park Whom I Want To Win: Wallace and Gromitt shorts don’t come out often enough, but when they do they’re brilliant. A Matter of Loaf and Death. Who’s Going To Win: The charm of A Matter of Loaf and Death will most likely pierce the stone cold heart of the Academy. Short Film (Live Action) “The Door” — Juanita Wilson and James Flynn “Instead of Abracadabra” — Patrik Eklund and Mathias Fjellström “Kavi” — Gregg Helvey “Miracle Fish” — Luke Doolan and Drew Bailey “The New Tenants” — Joachim Back and Tivi Magnusson Whom I Want To Win: I’ve only seen The Door, so I’m going with that. Who’s Going To Win: Not sure, but I’ll just say The Door. Sound Editing “Avatar” — Christopher Boyes and Gwendolyn Yates Whittle “The Hurt Locker” — Paul N. J. Ottosson “Inglourious Basterds” — Wylie Stateman “Star Trek” — Mark Stoeckinger and Alan Rankin “Up” — Michael Silvers and Tom Myers Whom I Want To Win: The Hurt Locker, because that had to be one hell of a movie to edit, especially sound wise. Who’s Going To Win: I’m pretty sure the Academy will agree with me on The Hurt Locker. Sound Mixing “Avatar” — Christopher Boyes, Gary Summers, Andy Nelson and Tony Johnson “The Hurt Locker” — Paul N. J. Ottosson and Ray Beckett “Inglourious Basterds” — Michael Minkler, Tony Lamberti and Mark Ulano “Star Trek” — Anna Behlmer, Andy Nelson and Peter J. Devlin “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” — Greg P. Russell, Gary Summers and Geoffrey Patterson Whom I Want To Win: The Hurt Locker has a thousand different things happening at once during the combat scenes, but unlike Michael Bay, I can actually comprehend it. This is what you’ll be using to test out your sound systems this year. Who’s Going To Win: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Just kidding. The Hurt Locker for the win. Visual Effects “Avatar” — Joe Letteri, Stephen Rosenbaum, Richard Baneham and Andrew R. Jones “District 9” — Dan Kaufman, Peter Muyzers, Robert Habros and Matt Aitken “Star Trek” — Roger Guyett, Russell Earl, Paul Kavanagh and Burt Dalton Whom I Want To Win: I’m not going to lie, Avatar looks absolutely gorgeous. Who’s Going To Win: Huh… what? Sorry, I was too busy looking at the pretty jungle. Those are my picks. What’s yours?

I really hope Jeff Bridges wins for Crazy Heart.
If this man doesn't win , I will do an tear shit up.
This man deserves a medal for winning at acting. Seriously.
BLESS YOUR SOUL.
Which is weird because usually I'm pretty flexible about those things.
Also, prepare to "lose all faith in mankind."
Also, it'd be awesome if Kathryn Bigelow won for Best Direction just so she could rub it in the face of her ex-husband, James Cameron.
Also fuck Jason Reitman, fuck Up In The Air, fuck Juno, fuck a Hamburger phone!
and my roommate works with Joakim Back so I'm rooting for "The New Tenants"
Meh... I'm rooting for District 9 for something! :)
On the other hand, Jumbo is not very smart.
Ironically in the Animation department I'm cheering for Fantastic Mr. Fox or Coraline. With all due respect to Up's amazingness Pixar wins that award almost every god damn year if not every god damn and last year was a really good year for Animation.
Let's see what else do I have to say...well I guess I'll throw out a nice "Fuck you," to Inglorious Basterds haters. As with all Tarantino I know why you guys didn't like if but I perhaps I have a superhuman attention span and don't see the big deal behind long winded dialog. Hint: I liked Death Proof.
I guess that segues into my cinematography choice: Inglorious Basterds. I'll repeat "Fuck you all."
The White Ribbon for foreign films (saw it as part of my film class, it was amazing).
Also, I'll throw A Serious Man into my list of Best Films. It was the one film of all this that literally had every element of what draws me to go see a film altogether. An interesting era, a weird character, dry dark humor, and trippy ass scenes. Granted I never actually SAW it but that's only because I couldn't find a theater showing it.
And lastly no I didn't see Precious. You know why? It had one of the most annoying a fuck trailers ever. My mother wanted to see it. Had she been around when it released I probably would've seen it.
Oh and fuck The Blind Side. Can I get a amen?
The Gurt Locker."
I want to see that:D
Ponyo? Seriously? You'd have to be super duper mega-high while watching it to have the kind of experience that would rival Up; and I say that as a Miyazaki fan (Princess Mononoke is one of my all-time faves).
@Xzyliac
I generally love Tarantino (and his dialogue). I'm watching Kill Bill right now. As for Basterds, Christoph Waltz was incredible. That said, the movie, as a whole, was overrated. Shoshanna's storyline always seemed to derail the film and overall it was much less cohesive than his other movies (my take). Also, I'm genuinely curious as to how you enjoyed Death Proof because I really wanted to. Kurt Russell was (in my opinion) the only good thing about that movie and there wasn't nearly enough of him. Why'd you like it?
