Greetings, Programs!

I am a 34 year old cubicle monkey living in Austin, TX. with my lovely wife of 2 years, Dawn. And yes, we are acutely aware of the cheesiness of the rhyme scheme. And no, it doesn't bother us when people make fun of us for being so saccharine, because we are both huge dorks in our spare time. Being happy in life gives your character +1 million XP towards the "not caring about other people's opinions" skill.

Above : Me from my theatre days. Puppy Licks says it makes me look like Kefka.

Likes : sense of humor, intelligence, creativity, the ability to argue without fighting, not taking one's self too seriously.

Dis-Likes : console crusaders, people who are cruel on the internet because they are too timid to express themselves in real life, people who cannot separate facts from opinions, Fox News, onions.

Am I still a gamer?
Sean Carey | 1:57 PM on 07.01.2009 21 comments

I've seen a lot of birthday blogs lately (congrats to all, btw!), and it has made me think about how despite my growing into responsibilities, relationships, and long-term goals, my love of gaming has remained undiminished by the cruel sands of time. (the metaphor, not the game)

Sure, by Dtoid standards, I'm practically a mummy at age 33, but I know in my heart of hearts that the child-like joy of gaming will never truly vanish. . . here are some ways to tell if you're still a true gamer as you start to grow up, cut your damn hair, and get a job already!

1. When you approach any kind of door with a motion sensor / motor, like at the grocery store, you still place one hand on your temple and the other outstretched so you can pretend you are opening it with your powers of telekinesis.

I command ye, portals of the supermarket, to open!

2. When you leave said grocery store, you veer towards the fastest/sweetest ride in the parking lot until you realize that you cannot jack it and head back towards your ride.

3. You have a line item in your monthly/yearly budget under the heading : 'Pew-Pew'.

4. You still occasionally look at the sun just long enough to get that greenish dot in the center of your vision when you blink, and then rapidly flutter your eyes at people in a crowd like you've had an ocular gatling laser installed in your head and are mowing them down.

5. You go to Dave and Busters for your birthday just for appearances, even though Chuck E. Cheese would still be perfectly acceptable to you.

6. When you pull up Google Maps before heading to a work function, and click on the icon for the destination, fully expecting the fast-travel function to kick in.

Travel time from Vvardenfell to Cyrodil -- 2.8 months.

7. You return your GPS to Best Buy, complaining that the locations of the police officers that pulled you over were not clearly displayed on the map.

8. You double-take when looking at your 'Tasks' tab in Microsoft Outlook, because it occasionally reads as 'Quest Log'.

(sample entries : Complete 10 spreadsheets and return to Boss, Vanquish 12 Dissatisfied Customer Concerns, Locate the Lost Toner Cartridge)

9. In the winter, you still giggle uncontrollably when your significant other offers you some "hot coffee" in the morning.

10. The right game can still make you feel like this . . .

This kid embodies the true spirit of STFUAJPG!

practically a mummy at age 34... ouch! I'm over 10 years older than you! LOL!

... well, in another few years when you grow up maybe I can lend you a copy of GTW (Grand Theft Wheelchair)!
(it's rated "PD"... Practically Dead!)
- but you get to chase kids around with a cane and knock over pharmacies for the "good" drugs! :)

@Else - And the "hot coffee" mod actually involves a barista who gives you a cup of joe that's too hot, and activates a lengthy griping minigame.

@Elsa -- don't worry, my wife and I'll be right along side you and your hubby at the nursing home, bitching about how none of the kids' noisy music nowadays compares to Nirvana. :)

Also, I don't think either one of us will ever REALLY grow up.

I am however, toally looking forward to referring to my hair as the Sony Grey-Station!

@walkyourpath

I'm only 25 but I'll join you and the other old people in your bitching :)

Oh and number one applies for Star Wars fans too!

Phew, at least I fit in with #10. I didn't even know what Dave and Busters was.

I've been doing #1 since I was 3.

@Kris -- agreed on the star wars! that's why I started doing it in the first place. I dropped off for a bit, then I played Psi-Ops and I haven't stopped since. :)

@Kauza -- I always forget Dave and Busters is a regional thing. . . it's a video-games/games for tickets type place, but more for adults with a bar, pool tables, shuffleboard, sports on the TVs, etc. . .

Besides, #10 is the only one that really counts.

@Daxelman -- I remember I had myself convinced at age 8 that I had really done it, because a paper I had tacked to the wall in my room started moving in time with my focusing. So I jumped up to check it out, and felt the blast of the AC on the back of my neck that was blowing the paper. LOL. Dream crushing. . . I'll never give up, though!

Damn it, the text is too small without mah readin' glasses.

My girlfriend hates it when I do number 1, except I pretend I'm using the force haha...

...don't judge me!

... and I'm not cutting my hair either, screw you grown-ups lol

@Grafkhun -- then here's hoping we never see eye to eye on anything! <rimshot>

@Fronz -- thx for the feedback!

@Blasto -- I actually have been putting off cutting my hair too, but it's starting to get into that awkward Steven Seagal euro-mullet length, so I'll have to give in soon!

@Takeshi -- Yeah, when the Outlook references are making sense you know that things have changed. Cheer up, getting older only means we can afford more games!

@Magnalon -- Aw, shucks! I appreciate you reading them, man.

Great list, I wanna be first in line when that Google map thing gets implemented. This is the future dammit, I was promised floating cars and hover boards, the least they could do is perfect teleportation.

This kept me entertained. I never know with me... but I think I'll be gamer for life... I've been one since I can remember and I'm 23 with no sign of stopping.

I really wish they had a comment/blog rating system here... so in lieu of that:
+1 to Bullet on the hot coffee mod
+1 to Walkyourpath on the "grey-station" comment! :)

My name is Shawn to man, and I'm 29. We get older, we grow up, and we get more responsibility, but it's the kid inside of us who helps make us who we truly are. Never stop gaming!

@Zodiac -- I can't remember the name of the comic who said that when teleportation gets invented, we'll just complain that the trip took 14 milliseconds instead of the usual 9 milliseconds. Won't keep me from hoping for it, though! :)

@Holy -- For life, baby! And you know this . . . man!

@Elsa -- you get +50 for being so involved in commenting and discussion. . . it gives you great motivation to blog when you know that there's folks out there always reading and sharing their thoughts.

@Silver -- True that, man! The responsibility exists to create a space for us to pursue our happiness. Work to live, not live to work, as the saying goes. Gaming helps keep that clear for me! Also, Seans/Shawns FTW. We gotta stick together.
