Following the death of my Wii drive (it won't even take discs now), I was feeling kind of glum. Since it's outside of warranty (yes, I made the call to Nintendo) pretty much my options are to buy a new drive off eBay and install it myself, sell it on eBay, trade it in at Game Stop for a ridiculously low price (read: $65, or $100 with all the accessories), or be a real bastard and find one at a Wal-Mart and return the broken one (suggested by a devious friend). The first three are basically fine, but my scruples will not allow me to do the latter.
In the meantime I was really wanting to play things like GTA IV, had some extra cash from selling an older laptop, and in the future I was seeing some really nice games on both systems (PS3 and 360). For the 360: Fable 2, GoW2, Velvet Assassin, Infinite Undiscovery and the fact that I never played Halo 3 other than at a friends house, didn't get to play Ninja Gaiden 2, and whatever the current RPG is (Lost Odyssey?).
Of course, on the other side of the fence I had the PS3 looming in my vision. MGS 4 is definitely a game I've wanted to play, and of course there are going to be FF XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Resistance 2, and Ridge Racer 7.
Plus, it doesn't help that there are going to be a ton of cross platform games coming soon, making the choice even harder. Bad Company, anyone? Damn I can't wait to play that.
In the end, I really can only get one at the moment... and it ended up being the 360.
I got a factory refurbished one basically meaning it's supposedly got the fix to combat the RROD problem, and even if it does happen the warranty is there as well as a multitude of fixes outside of warranty down the road that I will feel totally confident doing since I work on repairing computers ALL DAY. I also have some LIVE time left over from when I traded for the Wii, so that bumped me in that direction a bit... but really I couldn't spend the extra $150 for the PS3.
There just aren't enough must have games for me on that system to tip the balance in that direction. I certainly want one, because I want every console. I game. I want to play everything.
At least I feel happy again... there is a fully functional game console next to my television. I mean, the Wii still works minus the drive meaning I can still play My Life as a King, Lost Winds, and some VC games for now. But the 360 games look absolutely fucking brilliant in HD, and there are plenty of things that aren't coming out for PC on it for me to be satisfied with buying one again.
i thought nintendo was fixing disc drives for free, did you tell them you just brought smash bros and it isnt working
No. The drive is dead... like not even taking discs. Nothing to do with the dual layer problem, unfortunately. The pic was the only thing I could find that would convey deadness of Wii. :)
man that sux about your wii, but at least you've got a 360 now :-)
I wouldn't try the Wal-Mart return thing. When Nintendo systems are sold, the cashier scans the box and the system, via a cutout in the box. You'd most likely be turned away.
@Nilcam
That's all systems. But still, You'd think they would check but they don't. They don't actually check most times. I dunno. If I got paid that much, I doubt I'd give a crap either.
Yeah... most of the time they don't check. Even so, I would just replace the insides and basically give them back the shell. You can see why this feels really devious to me, 'cause it is.
So, does anyone want to buy me a replacement drive? :) I also can't bring myself to get 1/3rd the credit for it at Game Stop.
In a few months you wont even remember you had a Wii. I just sold mine to fund a Ps3/MGS4 purchase and i couldnt be happier.
Congrats on a real "Current Gen" system!
Also, your 1/3 credit could pay for a few games/accesories and they would fix it and sell it to a child in need. So you would be doing a good deed.
You could just buy a Wii at Wal-Mart and then put the messed up one in the box and return it in the new one's box asking for a refund because it didn't work.
I still haven't figured out what I want to do. There's a part of me that's sick of dealing with the Wii, but there's another part of me that says, "It's a console. Fix it."
