The balancing act of staying current and being retro, also some Phantasy Star II

I've been playing PSII for a couple months now and I really thought I'd be done already. The problem is that there are so many games out right now that I can't stay committed to playing it consistently while still playing new games. And then you add in the fact that PSII isn't the only retro game I'm playing at the moment. About two months ago I was about half through 5 or so games and I decided to just commit to one game so I could finish something before Fallout3 and Gears 2 take up all of my time. So I put most of my gaming time into Resident Evil 4. It was my first time playing that as well. It was completely amazing and worthy of all the praise its gotten. But playing that left PSII out in the cold. I feel bad but given the choice between wondering aimlessly through a dungeon hoping I don't die in a random encounter and killing Las Plagas, I'll choose the later.

I have made some progress in PSII though. I just got the leaf and took it to a guy so he can make gum that will let me breath underwater. I really like the Visiphone that lets you save anywhere. The game seems to have opened up a lot. It feels like I'm teleporting all over the place going to the different towns and using the Jet Scooter is pretty cool. Getting through the mountain to get the leaf was crazy hard. I used a map online after several failed attempts at getting through on my own. I have so much respect for all the young gamers you beat this game back in the day, I don't know how you did it. I don't have the patience anymore. With so many games to play I don't have the time or the patience to spend trying to make it through one of those dungeons on my own. I wish I could give the game the time it deserves but I just don't have the time.

Does anyone else struggle with the balance of staying current while still maintaining that retro cred?

I feel ya. I'm 26 and beat Phantasy Star II a few times now. Once when I was about 18 and another a year ago. Each time I've been playing at least 5 to 6 games at the same time, its a constant juggling act I do and somehow pull off. Some games fall through the cracks at times, but I have no problem going old school to catch up and coming back to the new within the same couple of hours.

Some of the older games I pick up, I just can't do without a guide to speed things along a little bit. The older RPGs that I pick up especially. So I feel ya. Don't get too down about using guides I say, the point of gaming is to have fun.

Pretty sure I used save states and maps for PSII plenty of times. I especially did for PSIII. It was so terrible I wanted to fly through that game as fast as possible, lol.

Ya, having too much games does stress me out totally. Right now I am juggling Mother 3, Fallout 3, and Fable 2. I am the worst at finishing games. Sometimes I get so much games on my plate at once that I just give up games all together, and never finish them. And so this comes to the point that game publishers need to reease games throughout the year, instead all at once in the holidays.

Paralysis of choice. I struggle with this a lot. I guess its a good problem though, overabundance.

Dude, don't feel bad at all at about using a map; the original game came with a guidebook! I wish I still had it...

Yay PSII :) When you finish it, please just skip PSIII and play PSIV.

I'm looking forward to playing more in the Phantasy Star universe. I've heard that 3 sucks and 4 is awesome. I wish 4 was on the Phantasy Star GBA collection I have, its only 1-3. Would you recommend going back and playing PS1? Are any of the other games after 4 any good?

I usually try playing one game at a time, always finishing the current one before getting new ones.

Although I do play some older stuff (mostly PSone games) on my PSP every now and then, but even balancing between two games is challenging to me.

Doing this during the holiday rush is also pretty handy, because there will be enough games for almost whole year and you can get most of them used / otherwise cheap.
