Frank Miller's Robocop
Frank Millar - Steven Grant - Juan Jose Ryp
Avatar Press

The original Robocop was fantastic. It was funny, violent, and it had some things to say about society (though not intelligently). The movie bordered on a thin line of acceptable ridiculousness, and was rather enjoyable cyberpunk flick. Robocop 2 and 3 on the other hand, were awful pieces of shit.

Everyone seems to place the blame on poor old Frank Miller for the dreadful sequels, but he says otherwise. According to him, Hollywood took his screenplay and made drastic changes. Producers of the film claimed that most Miller’s vision was “unfilmable”. Nevertheless, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Miller wasn’t too happy with the way Hollywood worked.

From 2003 to 2006 Avatar Press published nine issues of Frank Miller’s Robocop, now deemed to be the real Robocop sequels by nerds across the globe. The book follows Miller’s original Robocop 2 script, and bit off of Robocop 3 as well. He didn’t write it though. The adaptation was written by Steven Grant, but was looked over by Frank Miller.

With all that said, I don’t know if what Miller had written in his original script was worth all of the drama. The outlining story is practically the same. Detroit is still shitty, OCP still replaces the cops with a private military of criminals, and there is still a “Robocop 2” that Robocop has to battle.

I won’t tell you what differences there are between the movie and comic specifically. What I will say is that they make very little difference towards the end quality. Lewis still has no character, as well as everyone else in the book. Nothing is explored -- a generic and tired formula that begs to be ignored.

Grant does inject a bit of that satire found in the original film, and while it isn’t as good, he still manages to land a few on the bullseye. What is landing one hundred percent is the violence. Some of you could have fun with watching a woman’s burning, melting corpse slam against a wall.

The art was a tad difficult for me to review. While I can’t say it’s necessarily bad, it sure is “busy” (for lack of a better term). Too busy. Many times I’ve had to take a while to figure out what I was looking at. The detail work was somewhat impressive. In a way, it sort of channels that sense of chaos that comes from this universe’s version of Detroit. You can take it either way.

I can’t recommend this to everyone. I can’t even recommend it to most Robocop fans. You gain nothing from reading it. If you’re looking for something violent, or just want to rinse out some of what you saw in Robocop 2 and 3, then this could be for you. Everyone else should just…

I really don't know what has come over me. I've recently gone into some retro buying frenzy. I've bought an original Gameboy, a red Gameboy Pocket, a teal Gameboy Color, a Game Gear, and blue Neo Geo Pocket Color. I've also bought games for the systems I've purchased. The Game Gear I ordered itself came with around 11 carts, and the blue Neo Geo came with Sonic Pocket Adventure and SNK vs. Capcom.

As you can see, my new obsession has remained strictly handheld and I don't know why. With the exception of the Neo Geo Pocket color (which is amazing) I don't really play with them. I guess I'm just interested in the old technology. It can't be nostalgia. Apart from the Gameboy Color, I never owned any of these other consoles.

At any rate, I got two new handhelds (plus games) added to my collection.

I'm actually quite shocked at how heavy this thing feels considering its size. This is actually my new favorite Gameboy. It came with Sonic Advanced, but I'm about as interested in Sonic the Hedgehog as I am listening to Republicans on AM radio.

Another Neo Geo Pokcet! I actually bought this because the first one I got wasn't in excellent condition. I mean, it isn't awful, but the small scratches were distracting.

It came with 3 games in their original boxes. They weren't sealed and nor was the the Neo Geo Pocket, but they were all in like-new conditioned with no cosmetic damage at all.

The Sonic ADvanced trilogy was truly incredible. Only better games on the GBA I can think of are Astro Boy Omega Factor, and Medabots perhaps.

I love my Neo Geo Pocket Color. If we ever meet in real life we're gonna have to play some SvC together.

NG Pocket Color! *drolls* Did you buy it at eBay?

Also, I need to get a GBA Micro ASAP, I reall want to stop using my DS as a second GBA since the games sticking out of it it's kinda distracting.

@Styos: Dude, I'm with you. I hated having those GBA carts stick out. It did take me a while to find a Micro that wasn't horribly overpriced. I got that one from chasethechuckwagon.com for $30. Which is what Gamestop sells them for if you're lucky enough to find one in the store.

And yes I did get the NGPC from Ebay. It was actually reasonably priced considering it and the games came in the box.

The Game Boy Micro is surprisingly awesome. I picked up one of the limited "20th Anniversary" Micros a few years back (it looks just like a Famicom controller, with a shiny gold faceplate), and I love both its portability and feel. The only downside is that action-heavy games that require constant use of the L/R buttons can be a little uncomfortable, but it handles most games admirably.

Also, I might as well brag that I also have the "Controller II" faceplate for it, which has a fake volume slider and microphone printed on it and the number II instead of I. Apparently that's kind of rare and was only released through Japan's Club Nintendo.

The Neo Geo pocket is brilliant. It had the perfect controller for a handheld. I want a handheld with the power of a NeoGeo, the NGPC stick and 4 face buttons. Port Neo games over to it and I'd be content forever with the device.
