Frank Miller's Robocop
Frank Millar - Steven Grant - Juan Jose Ryp
Avatar Press

The original Robocop was fantastic. It was funny, violent, and it had some things to say about society (though not intelligently). The movie bordered on a thin line of acceptable ridiculousness, and was rather enjoyable cyberpunk flick. Robocop 2 and 3 on the other hand, were awful pieces of shit.

Everyone seems to place the blame on poor old Frank Miller for the dreadful sequels, but he says otherwise. According to him, Hollywood took his screenplay and made drastic changes. Producers of the film claimed that most Miller’s vision was “unfilmable”. Nevertheless, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Miller wasn’t too happy with the way Hollywood worked.

From 2003 to 2006 Avatar Press published nine issues of Frank Miller’s Robocop, now deemed to be the real Robocop sequels by nerds across the globe. The book follows Miller’s original Robocop 2 script, and bit off of Robocop 3 as well. He didn’t write it though. The adaptation was written by Steven Grant, but was looked over by Frank Miller.

With all that said, I don’t know if what Miller had written in his original script was worth all of the drama. The outlining story is practically the same. Detroit is still shitty, OCP still replaces the cops with a private military of criminals, and there is still a “Robocop 2” that Robocop has to battle.

I won’t tell you what differences there are between the movie and comic specifically. What I will say is that they make very little difference towards the end quality. Lewis still has no character, as well as everyone else in the book. Nothing is explored -- a generic and tired formula that begs to be ignored.

Grant does inject a bit of that satire found in the original film, and while it isn’t as good, he still manages to land a few on the bullseye. What is landing one hundred percent is the violence. Some of you could have fun with watching a woman’s burning, melting corpse slam against a wall.

The art was a tad difficult for me to review. While I can’t say it’s necessarily bad, it sure is “busy” (for lack of a better term). Too busy. Many times I’ve had to take a while to figure out what I was looking at. The detail work was somewhat impressive. In a way, it sort of channels that sense of chaos that comes from this universe’s version of Detroit. You can take it either way.

I can’t recommend this to everyone. I can’t even recommend it to most Robocop fans. You gain nothing from reading it. If you’re looking for something violent, or just want to rinse out some of what you saw in Robocop 2 and 3, then this could be for you. Everyone else should just…

Upgrading My PC and Popping My Cherry At the Same Time

A while ago my laptop had crapped out on me. It got a virus that rendered it completely useless, and I used that as an excuse to buy myself a new PC. I did think it was a hardware problem, but I never thought or cared enough to re-install Windows XP. Plus, I was tired of laptops. I needed something more powerful that wasn't going to cost me over $2,000.

I drove over to Best Buy the next day and picked myself out an HP machine. It's fairly decent machine (from my understanding) apart from the graphics card, which I later found out was a pretty low end card. See, kids. I know jack shit about computer hardware. I mean, I guess know enough not to get completely ripped off.

Current PC specs:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700(2.66GHz)
Memory: 6GB DDR2 800
Hard Drive: 750GB SATA 7200RPM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9500GS
Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit

So after a few weeks of jumping into the PC gaming scene I was pretty hooked, and decided I should fix the only real problem (wait, this machine has Vista...shit) which was the graphics card.

I hopped onto newegg and found myself a fairly decent priced 8800GT. Then I ran into another problem, and if it were not for me asking around, I probably would have bought the card.

It turns out my PC came with a measly 350w PSU. That's not enough power to run this beefy card. So last week I ordered both the PSU and the graphics card and today they've arrived.

This is the first time I will have upgraded my PC on my own, so wish me luck. I'll be updating this blog as I go along through my other computer. Wish me luck!

P.S. - Sorry for the two blogs being right on top of each other. I wrote my Crysis blog last night and this blog today. I wanted to write it before I tried upgrading my PC.

Vista runs just as fast if not faster than XP now. get w/ the times. Also DX10.

If it were me i woulda gotten a Radeon HD 4850. It's only slightly more $ & a lot faster. plus is DX 10.1

Alex, that stock powersupply should have been sufficient man. If you check the peak watt usage for the card, it'll never surpass what you had with it. I'm running a 8800 GT overclocked on a stock Dell powersupply, and it works fine. Just make sure to get a shit ton of extra fans to cool that bastard down.

Just get XP Pro 64 bit. There's no reason for Vista.

XP doesnt have DX10. I think that's a pretty big reason.

Please god do not get XP64, it is utterly terrible. The driver support is far worse than Vista 64 ever was.

Vista Home Premium 64 bit is excellent.

If you are still looking for graphics cards, I wouldn't get anything less than a 9800GTX+ or 4850. They can both be had for <#200 and are excellent cards for the money. You won't need much of a psu for them either. I'd say Corsair/Antec 550 or less would do just fine. You'd be surprised how oversized PSUs are.

@Log1c: Reading is fundamental, he already has both. Idiot.

Alex, what PSU did you get? Where did you get 6GB of ram from?

logic has good advice. you dont need overkill on a PSU, but you also dont want anything stock from any of the big brand companies... they blow.

if you get something between 500-700 you should have the juice to slap another 8800GT in there later if you wanna go for some SLI, or viceversa if you wanna put a beefier card in there later.

i cant comment on vista64 but aside from dx10 there isnt much reason to use vista. however, to get use out of all of your ram, youd need a 64bit OS, so i suppose v64 is the way to go.

also, @cc, be prepared to replace that PSU soon, cause dell's PSUs BLOW HARD, and if you are OCing anything itll die even sooner i would imagine. just a fair warning, ive replaced too many dell PSUs to count, and in a few instances i believe they were responsible for frying the motherboard (rare).

I recently upgraded my PSU and video card as well in order to play Warhammer Online. It's really not too hard and pretty idiot proof these days. The biggest problem I had was finding space for all the extra power cords that came with the PSU.

In fact I think I bought the same exact PSU.

Also, with a system with specs like ours gaming in Vista isn't a problem. Don't listen to the haters saying you need to run XP.

No. There's something that's getting in the way of the graphics card. Fixable, but I can't do anything about it so I've taken it to a friend of mine. The guy said he could do it, but he won't be back home 'till Wednesday, so for now, I wait.

You should've gotten another Geforce 9 series card, you wouldn't have needed to upgrade the power. ;) The G9 GPU is smaller and more efficient than the G8- 350 watts is enough. A Geforce 9600 GT costs and performs about the same as a Geforce 8800, while running slightly cooler, using moderately less power, and some minor performance tweaks for loading times.
