Frank Miller's Robocop
Frank Millar - Steven Grant - Juan Jose Ryp
Avatar Press

The original Robocop was fantastic. It was funny, violent, and it had some things to say about society (though not intelligently). The movie bordered on a thin line of acceptable ridiculousness, and was rather enjoyable cyberpunk flick. Robocop 2 and 3 on the other hand, were awful pieces of shit.

Everyone seems to place the blame on poor old Frank Miller for the dreadful sequels, but he says otherwise. According to him, Hollywood took his screenplay and made drastic changes. Producers of the film claimed that most Millers vision was unfilmable. Nevertheless, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Miller wasnt too happy with the way Hollywood worked.

From 2003 to 2006 Avatar Press published nine issues of Frank Millers Robocop, now deemed to be the real Robocop sequels by nerds across the globe. The book follows Millers original Robocop 2 script, and bit off of Robocop 3 as well. He didnt write it though. The adaptation was written by Steven Grant, but was looked over by Frank Miller.

With all that said, I dont know if what Miller had written in his original script was worth all of the drama. The outlining story is practically the same. Detroit is still shitty, OCP still replaces the cops with a private military of criminals, and there is still a Robocop 2 that Robocop has to battle.

I wont tell you what differences there are between the movie and comic specifically. What I will say is that they make very little difference towards the end quality. Lewis still has no character, as well as everyone else in the book. Nothing is explored -- a generic and tired formula that begs to be ignored.

Grant does inject a bit of that satire found in the original film, and while it isnt as good, he still manages to land a few on the bullseye. What is landing one hundred percent is the violence. Some of you could have fun with watching a womans burning, melting corpse slam against a wall.

The art was a tad difficult for me to review. While I cant say its necessarily bad, it sure is busy (for lack of a better term). Too busy. Many times Ive had to take a while to figure out what I was looking at. The detail work was somewhat impressive. In a way, it sort of channels that sense of chaos that comes from this universes version of Detroit. You can take it either way.

I cant recommend this to everyone. I cant even recommend it to most Robocop fans. You gain nothing from reading it. If youre looking for something violent, or just want to rinse out some of what you saw in Robocop 2 and 3, then this could be for you. Everyone else should just

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - Impressions
vexed alex | 2:11 AM on 06.09.2008 31 comments

Uncharted is the second PS3 game I've bought since I bought my system a little while ago. I can't say the game has pushed any new buttons, but who's to say a game has to for it to be fun or for it to be considered a 10? I sure don't, but we all have our opinions. Just so long as you don't consider a 10 to be a "perfect" game. You're just asking for me to put you down with that.

I'll start with what I think of the visuals. It's the easiest to evaluate.

The graphics in Uncharted are great. They're not the best, but they are great. What really shines here are the animations. Nathan Drake moves so fluidly and so much more naturally than so many games. Developers of Grand Theft Auto IV, Assassin's Creed, and Uncharted have clearly paid attention to detail when it comes to the movement of their characters which is key when trying to set the mood. I feel really tense when there's a gun fight and Nathan Drake is cursing under his breath and twitching as bullets hit nearby.

Watching Nathan run faster as things get hotter gets me really immersed. The facial expressions during the cut scenes and during game-play are fantastic. This game looks good.

Now, as for the game-play, I'm really enjoying myself. The cover system sometimes gets sticky. It's not as weak as GTA IV's (which I didn't find to be too bad, but not good either) but it sometimes annoys me. The thing that really bugs me is the game's climbing system. Sometimes I think I'm able to grab on to somethings and it turns out I can't. It gets a tad annoying at first; especially when there's ledge you would be able to grab would it not be for the fact that you're not supposed to.

There's also the explosive barrels. They are totally fucking lame. They're extremely lame when they're in the most absolutely dumb places. Example? Inside an ancient tomb in convenient places where they knock down walls you need to get past. There's also barrels inside your enemy's jeep where you can shoot at it and blow the gunner that's sitting in it away. It's so (for lack of a better word) "last-gen." It almost feels cheap and lazy to have them in there.

The gun-play itself is pretty fun. The guns sometimes feel and sound pretty bland, but they're not bad. I just wish the bad guys in this game weren't mutant men. I swear I emptied an entire assault rifle clip in a guy and he walked around like it was nothing. I guess I've been spoiled by Grand Theft Auto's characters limping away.

There are some A.I. issues as well, but it never feels too bad. Sometimes characters don't react the way they should. They may stop moving for a second and then realize I'm there. Another issue that I have that's not a glitch is the way they rush the shit out of you. They're almost too good for me. I'll have some guys in front of me and I'll have my attention on them and then all of a sudden they'll come at me from both sides and take me out. It makes the game harder, but that's something I'll have to learn to deal with.

Hey, if Wardrox can bitch about GTA's difficult driving controls, I can bitch about A.I. characters who all look the same. Fuckers bum rush you like crazy.

The story in the game is nothing special. It's a treasure hunting story. The thing that really draws me in are the characters. They're just lovable and I don't have the slightest clue why. It could be that they're just charming. Nathan Drake feels like a modern day Indiana Jones (which I recently watched for the first time) and the female character...she looks so real. She doesn't have massive breasts, and a the body of a super model. She's naturally beautiful and dare I say; adorable.

Yes, I do feel like a lame ass for admitting that I found a video game character cute

All in all I'm really enjoying this game. The story isn't great (it's not bad so far - just sort of typical), but the characters are. The game-play is so-so for me at times. It has it's moments that happen enough times for me to want to continue playing, and be excited to continue playing. If you have a PS3, please pick this up. I'd like to see more of this game in the future.

Ah, this is a great game indeed! From what i've heard, it did'nt sell as expected unfortunally, but Naughty Dog has confirmed a sequel!
I'm hoping for a trilogy that turns in to a quadrilogy when a fourth game is released 15 years later.

yeah I totally love this game too :-)

but they should cut out the shooting and just stick to navigating through the jungle/desert temples with their awesome run/climb-system :-)

like when you have to climb into a building atop a clip, EPIC!

Video game characters can be happy, sad and angry. They can be ugly, muscular and broad, or they can be slim, firm and sexy. They can be nice and lovable, or complete cocks. Computer generated characters embody the characteristics of real people, even more so with motion capture and great voice acting like in Uncharted, it's what makes you love or hate a character.

With the advancement of technology, it's become so easy to portray the kind of things that make us attracted to other people, not just sexually, but mentally as well. I'm positive everybody has fallen for a character in at least one game they have played, be it man or woman, and if they say they haven't, they just don't want to admit it.

That being said, I too thought that Elena was cute in a very down to earth kind of way, and Nathan is one of my favorite adventures after playing through his story. I love the way he ducks and flinches as bullets fly by while hiding behind cover.

Also, if you think the enemies are mutant men now... just you wait.

As I’ve said before, this was my favorite PS3-exclusive game of 2007. Yeah, the barrels were very “last-gen”, but I didn’t mind them because the explosions looked and sounded so damn good. As for the graphics, in my opinion, a better-looking game hasn’t been released yet. There’s a bit of screen tearing and texture pop-in, but it’s minimal — and I never cease to be amazed at the water effects in Uncharted.

The AI definitely has that “last-gen” thing they do where they won’t notice you until you cross an invisible threshold into “their territory” (or start firing at them), and that’s unfortunate. But I love how smart they are (for example, as you mentioned, they’ll flank you, and they’ll also use grenades to flush you out). And I absolutely agree on the characters — they were all so well-drawn, and Elena was one of the best female characters I’ve ever seen in a videogame.

Nice write-up, Alex!

I agree about Elena being adorable. The characters in Uncharted are really well done. If you watch the behind-the-scenes bits the actress actually looks a fair bit like her, so that means it's not lame... I hope.

I woudl sex up Nathan.

Also, with things like ledges, it took me a few hours to work out; If you are at the end of a ledge, move the stick without jumping, Nathan will reach out if there is a ledge you can jump to.

Easily one of the PS3's best. I loved this game from start to finish. The polish in this game is stunning. I could nitpick but really it would be for nitpick's sake. A game that needs to be experienced by all.

The game is beautiful, that's for certain. Truthfully, I've never played a game as good looking. Sure, some games like Mass Effect appear to look nicer, but then again you don't have to wait through insane load times to play Uncharted. The technology is awesome.

As for the game, expect to continue with gun-fight after gun-fight. For some it's repetitive, but for others it's not. Hopefully you'll be in the latter camp.

It was my favorite game of last year besides Super Mario Galaxy.

Also, don't waste time with machine guns!!!! Against all humans, use only the standard hand gun. Go for headshots and you'll have no problems. They aren't weak, but a headshot usually works.

I have to disagree with anyone that says this isn't the best looking game out there.

As far as color goes, no other game even touches this.

The animation, the way the vegataion looks.

This game really makes me wish MGS3 would of came out on ps3 instead of 2.

After making my own comment and seeing weedgans, I'd just like to ask a question, alex: What games truly look better than this? If we account for both the technical and aesthetic side of things, as well as the art design and use of color, I'd rather look at this than Crysis.

This shit was beautiful.

@ EDS

At times the jungle looks a little strange to me. I understand why because making foliage does seem a bit difficult. More difficult than making a city, anyways. The explosions didn't look as great as I wish they did. It's a light flash followed by a strange looking ball of black smoke.

The game looks great, but it didn't impress me too much. The the environment, anyway. The character models blew me away, though.

@ AgentMOO

Totally. Everyone should buy this game instead of watching Indiana Jones.

@ Samit

You're right. The AI is pretty fantastic when you're in a gun fight. Like I said, it's too good for me. They used grenades to get me away from my cover and gun me down as I run away. It's not really a bad thing, it's just frustrating at times. I need to get better.

The game was a pretty fun play through. Just wish there was a little blood and more speed in my jet ski levels.

Yes, Elena is one of the few realistic female characters in a video game. The voice acting really shined in this game, made the characters come alive with their awesome motion capture work.

I really loved the way they pretty much avoided the obvious love story that could have been there too. I find it much more satisfying to have that kind of working sexual tension between two characters as opposed to a sappy plot line. There is a level of class involved with pulling off that kind of thing that I enjoy immensely. Clever subtlety is always more erotic than the usual "look at my huge tits" type of attraction. Just look at Princess Leia and Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back. Easily one of the most interesting romantic angles in a movie known for cheesiness, because the chemistry was there in a believable way that takes time to develop.

Definatly one of my favorites from last year for the PS3. The character models and voice acting were all very well done, I loved Sully's voice, it seemed to be a perfect fit for his character type. The gameplay was also fun, while it can get repetitive, what game like this doesn't, it has enough variation to feel fresh. I like capping the bad guys a few times, and running up to him while he's stunned and finish him off with a punch to the face. Or getting a magnum and shooting a guy and seeing him fly back 10 feet, always satisfying. As far as the graphics go for the game type, the only one that looks as good if not better is Heavenly Sword.

Also, I agree that this was a better treasure hunter, Indiana Jones, type experience than Crystal Skull was. Didn't I hear that some movie studio bought the rights to this? If they make it with the right characters it could be a hella fun movie.

I found the gunplay to be the most boring part of the game. Every battle unfolds in the same way, and yes, it's frustrating just how much damage an enemy has to take before he dies. It's either one shot to the head or twelve shots to the chest.

The graphics were beautiful, but I can't help but use the term "overrated" when describing this game, because it looks great, but the gameplay gets boring really quickly.

@Dexter345: That’s a fair criticism. But I never had any problems getting headshots :) That’s why I stuck with the upgraded pistol (the 92FS, I think) for most of the game. The Uzi and AK were rather inaccurate, and spraying someone’s body with those guns just took way too long to kill them.
