Frank Miller's Robocop
Frank Millar - Steven Grant - Juan Jose Ryp
Avatar Press

The original Robocop was fantastic. It was funny, violent, and it had some things to say about society (though not intelligently). The movie bordered on a thin line of acceptable ridiculousness, and was rather enjoyable cyberpunk flick. Robocop 2 and 3 on the other hand, were awful pieces of shit.

Everyone seems to place the blame on poor old Frank Miller for the dreadful sequels, but he says otherwise. According to him, Hollywood took his screenplay and made drastic changes. Producers of the film claimed that most Miller’s vision was “unfilmable”. Nevertheless, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Miller wasn’t too happy with the way Hollywood worked.

From 2003 to 2006 Avatar Press published nine issues of Frank Miller’s Robocop, now deemed to be the real Robocop sequels by nerds across the globe. The book follows Miller’s original Robocop 2 script, and bit off of Robocop 3 as well. He didn’t write it though. The adaptation was written by Steven Grant, but was looked over by Frank Miller.

With all that said, I don’t know if what Miller had written in his original script was worth all of the drama. The outlining story is practically the same. Detroit is still shitty, OCP still replaces the cops with a private military of criminals, and there is still a “Robocop 2” that Robocop has to battle.

I won’t tell you what differences there are between the movie and comic specifically. What I will say is that they make very little difference towards the end quality. Lewis still has no character, as well as everyone else in the book. Nothing is explored -- a generic and tired formula that begs to be ignored.

Grant does inject a bit of that satire found in the original film, and while it isn’t as good, he still manages to land a few on the bullseye. What is landing one hundred percent is the violence. Some of you could have fun with watching a woman’s burning, melting corpse slam against a wall.

The art was a tad difficult for me to review. While I can’t say it’s necessarily bad, it sure is “busy” (for lack of a better term). Too busy. Many times I’ve had to take a while to figure out what I was looking at. The detail work was somewhat impressive. In a way, it sort of channels that sense of chaos that comes from this universe’s version of Detroit. You can take it either way.

I can’t recommend this to everyone. I can’t even recommend it to most Robocop fans. You gain nothing from reading it. If you’re looking for something violent, or just want to rinse out some of what you saw in Robocop 2 and 3, then this could be for you. Everyone else should just…

Turn 10 Blog Shows Off SUVs In Forza 3

When I first set my eyes on some of the Forza 3 leaked images, one thing caught my eye. There was an outline of a SUV on the vehicle select screen. Tonight, Turn 10’s bi-weekly announcement blog made it official. SUVs confirmed for Forza 3. That may sound like the least interesting thing in the world to some of you. Understandable even though you’re wrong.

As explained in one of my blogs, I love challenging myself in games like these. A heavy, tall vehicle is going to be new, hard, and suh-weet; especially down some winding Italian road. It’s going to be fun just seeing how they’ll be able to compete with the Ferraris and the Lamborghinis that will probably climb the leader boards within the day.

Fortunately, these aren’t your typical Cadillac Escalades or Hummer H2s. American trash, if you will. These are sports luxury SUVs; bred to climb a muddy road with ease and style. We have the Land Rover Range Rover Sport, the Mercedes Ml63 AMG, the BMW X5 xDrive 4.8i, the Audi Q7 V12 TDI, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, and the Volkswagen Touraq R50. Doesn’t this list make you mad, environmentalists? Your tiny green hearts must be throbbing with rage.

All the vehicles will be fully upgradeable like their sports car brethren, so you may be able to tune that X5 into one bad mother. It may even be formidable opponent to its skinnier and much more nimble sister - the BMW M3.

There may be some whiners in the house tonight. That won’t be a surprise. SUVs in a serious racing game like this seems a bit sacrilege. The great thing about it all is that Forza 3 is quickly becoming the thing Turn 10 set out to do. It‘s a celebration of all things cars.

There are also a few other screenshots of some sports cars and luxury cars newly released today. Go check ‘em out on Forza’s website. Employ self-control. There’s a lot of car porn on that site.

AWESOME, so happy to see this, now if we can only get some american sports trucks, ala dodge srt-10 and ford lightning, maybe even some throwbacks like the chevy 454ss or gmc typhoon, and cyclone. and big v-10 german station wagons too. suv downhill rollover competitions ftw!

Ooooh. That could be rad. The Ford Lightning would be an amazing addition.

alex, do you have any idea how this game will handle unique vehicle traits like the adjustable air ride in the porsche cayenne, or the 7 speed automatics of either the bmw m5, or the big mercedes amg, i forget which has it?

I really don't. I know that Forza 2 completely ignored the unique stability control systems and limited slip differentials in some cars, and added stability and traction control to cars that didn't have it to make it easy for newcomers.

We shall see how it all pans out.

I don't blame anyone who wants to whine about the fact Forza is including SUVs in it's game. This would make sense if the SUVs could be raced on off-road courses, but that's not the case. I mean what's next? Will Forza include Minivans in Forza 4?

My only problem with it, is that instead of putting all this time and effort into adding SUVs, why not put the effort into adding something more sporty, like say motorcycles. Racing is about speed and handling, and SUVs don't have either of those two things.

After all that complaining though, I will still buy FOrza 3 on day #1. I'll probably but an SUV in the game, pimp it out, and race it. What can I say, I'm all talk when it comes to stuff like this.

SUVs is an interesting choice for a sim, can't wait, they'll probabily be really fun to drive. But the only thing I want from Racing Sims nowadays is a goddamn 5L Mustang. Any 5L Mustang. Dammit they're never in games

@Silverdragon: The problem there is that motorcycles aren't cars. This is a car simulation game, and doing motorcycles requires a whole different physics engine.

And if you think a Range Rover isn't quick, then you're sadly mistaken. A Range Rover can run circles around any Honda Civic, sir. Like I said. These aren't your typical American family SUVs. These are essentially sports cars.

One of my neighbors has a Porsche Cayenne. I only recognized it because it was in Project Gotham Racing 2.
