Frank Miller's Robocop
Frank Millar - Steven Grant - Juan Jose Ryp
Avatar Press

The original Robocop was fantastic. It was funny, violent, and it had some things to say about society (though not intelligently). The movie bordered on a thin line of acceptable ridiculousness, and was rather enjoyable cyberpunk flick. Robocop 2 and 3 on the other hand, were awful pieces of shit.

Everyone seems to place the blame on poor old Frank Miller for the dreadful sequels, but he says otherwise. According to him, Hollywood took his screenplay and made drastic changes. Producers of the film claimed that most Miller’s vision was “unfilmable”. Nevertheless, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Miller wasn’t too happy with the way Hollywood worked.

From 2003 to 2006 Avatar Press published nine issues of Frank Miller’s Robocop, now deemed to be the real Robocop sequels by nerds across the globe. The book follows Miller’s original Robocop 2 script, and bit off of Robocop 3 as well. He didn’t write it though. The adaptation was written by Steven Grant, but was looked over by Frank Miller.

With all that said, I don’t know if what Miller had written in his original script was worth all of the drama. The outlining story is practically the same. Detroit is still shitty, OCP still replaces the cops with a private military of criminals, and there is still a “Robocop 2” that Robocop has to battle.

I won’t tell you what differences there are between the movie and comic specifically. What I will say is that they make very little difference towards the end quality. Lewis still has no character, as well as everyone else in the book. Nothing is explored -- a generic and tired formula that begs to be ignored.

Grant does inject a bit of that satire found in the original film, and while it isn’t as good, he still manages to land a few on the bullseye. What is landing one hundred percent is the violence. Some of you could have fun with watching a woman’s burning, melting corpse slam against a wall.

The art was a tad difficult for me to review. While I can’t say it’s necessarily bad, it sure is “busy” (for lack of a better term). Too busy. Many times I’ve had to take a while to figure out what I was looking at. The detail work was somewhat impressive. In a way, it sort of channels that sense of chaos that comes from this universe’s version of Detroit. You can take it either way.

I can’t recommend this to everyone. I can’t even recommend it to most Robocop fans. You gain nothing from reading it. If you’re looking for something violent, or just want to rinse out some of what you saw in Robocop 2 and 3, then this could be for you. Everyone else should just…

The Beatles Rock Band: My Two Cents
vexed alex | 5:13 AM on 09.12.2009 13 comments

I never try and pretend like I’m the biggest Beatles fan. I enjoy their music quite a lot, but I’m not a raging maniac like my sister is whenever she sees Paul McCartney’s. I can understand why the band was so popular and why it has been put up on such a high pedestal, though. If you can’t, then you’re an imbecile. They were pioneers.

Now, I don’t know if this is just my high from recently finishing it, but if it is that’s completely irrelevant. I’ve played music games and apart from making me feel like a rock star even while I’m standing in the middle of my room in underwear, I never really got anything more from them. Understandably so since these games are designed to do that. Most party games don’t really care if you get a deep emotional response. They’re just concerned with fun, and that‘s great!

What Beatles Rock Band managed to do was not only make an informative tribute to the band, but they also managed to push a few extra buttons. I obviously didn’t cry. I’m a man for goodness sake. Men don’t cry.

No -- what Harmonix did was successfully present players this extraordinary band, and show you why it is that these four talented men are so beloved. Just think about the era that this band came from and how their music evolved. They Pop rock stars that were allowed to be experimental, and you get to witness key points through a rhythm game.

There wasn’t on key design choice that made it all great, though. It was the entire package, The music, the visuals, the way the game progressed. Everything from the character models to the all the littlest of details like the studio audio playing while a song loads. The game just feels like a labor of love. It has soul. It was made passionately. It makes me glad Harmonix were the ones doing this game and not Neversoft. That would have been disastrous.

Sorry for the my blog’s length and quality (or lack thereof) but I just had to say something. It isn’t hyperbole when I (shockingly) say that this has been one of the greatest emotional gaming and music listening experiences of my life.

While I was jotting down my thoughts I came across Deathofthedead's blog. It's similar to mine but vastly better articulated. Go read it.

Man, if you are apologizing for a blog of this length, I ought to send out condolence cards to my readers.

I'd really like to try this game out, with what great press it's been getting. Alas, I have no money.

This game looks like its way more fun to see people play than to play the game itself. I love the visuals and who doesn't love the Beatles?

But how many more RockBand or Guitar Hero will come out with nothing really new about them before they just boring. Confirmed: Rockband/Guitar Hero is the new Madden.

Thanks for the shout-out! But you're absolutely right, the Beatles in Activision's hands would have been terrible.

I really need to get this somehow. You know, I've never actually played Rock Band before. Just GH3 which came with my PS3 but was quickly forgotten about after my purchase of Warhawk.

"Confirmed: Rockband/Guitar Hero is the new Madden."

I'd agree with that. You don't hear that much about Madden nowadays from the meatheads: it's all about Rock Band/GH now.

I'm loving this game as well but I also agree with J1mbo, not that GH is the new madden, but rather that the series is facing stagnation if it doesn't change itself soon. And if it's impossible to change the formula without destroying the fun, maybe it's time for RB and GH to take a break. (like that would actually happen)

Eugh. I need to apologize for the quality of this blog again.

I'm going to agree with both you guys, DeadHead8 and Yoj1mb0. Sure, The Beatles Rock Band was a special case but I am getting heavy Rock Band/Guitar Hero fatigue. I can't play Rock Band 2 for very long. I get bored even with newly downloaded music. I'm not smart enough to suggest anything new for Harmonix to do, though.

I like the Beatles, but I don't love them. I have a lot of respect and admiration for what they were famous for, and I clearly see why people obsess over them, which seems perfectly legitimate to me. I played the game and enjoyed it.

Also, I'm not worried about GH/RB (especially GH) becoming the next Madden. See, there was a 46% drop in sales of GH lately. Now, GH already sells a lot compared to RB. The way I see it is, the plastic-instrument-music-genre is going to go downhill relatively quickly. Maybe, within a year, the whole premise of it will hit rock bottom. That's when it becomes niche, and people like you and I will still enjoy it.

Alex, would you think a Rock Band Rolling Stones game be a good idea?
Electro Lemon's Avatar - Comment posted on 09/12/2009 18:23

Rolling Stones: No. Plus, given the amount of Rolling Stones songs in Rock Band (namely, more than 1) it would be strange for them to get their own game. As of now, I think TB:RB is enough.

Are there any other bands that have a pretty big place in history, and haven't been in the game yet? Because I can't think of any (besides maybe Pink Floyd, but not happening. And not big enough)

I think Led Zeppelin Rock Band could be amazing, but chances are it'll never happen. They don't allow their music to be used for anything (except for Jack Black, apparently), not to mention they've already pretty much shot the idea down. Still, it'd be great.
