Frank Miller's Robocop
Frank Millar - Steven Grant - Juan Jose Ryp
Avatar Press

The original Robocop was fantastic. It was funny, violent, and it had some things to say about society (though not intelligently). The movie bordered on a thin line of acceptable ridiculousness, and was rather enjoyable cyberpunk flick. Robocop 2 and 3 on the other hand, were awful pieces of shit.

Everyone seems to place the blame on poor old Frank Miller for the dreadful sequels, but he says otherwise. According to him, Hollywood took his screenplay and made drastic changes. Producers of the film claimed that most Miller’s vision was “unfilmable”. Nevertheless, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Miller wasn’t too happy with the way Hollywood worked.

From 2003 to 2006 Avatar Press published nine issues of Frank Miller’s Robocop, now deemed to be the real Robocop sequels by nerds across the globe. The book follows Miller’s original Robocop 2 script, and bit off of Robocop 3 as well. He didn’t write it though. The adaptation was written by Steven Grant, but was looked over by Frank Miller.

With all that said, I don’t know if what Miller had written in his original script was worth all of the drama. The outlining story is practically the same. Detroit is still shitty, OCP still replaces the cops with a private military of criminals, and there is still a “Robocop 2” that Robocop has to battle.

I won’t tell you what differences there are between the movie and comic specifically. What I will say is that they make very little difference towards the end quality. Lewis still has no character, as well as everyone else in the book. Nothing is explored -- a generic and tired formula that begs to be ignored.

Grant does inject a bit of that satire found in the original film, and while it isn’t as good, he still manages to land a few on the bullseye. What is landing one hundred percent is the violence. Some of you could have fun with watching a woman’s burning, melting corpse slam against a wall.

The art was a tad difficult for me to review. While I can’t say it’s necessarily bad, it sure is “busy” (for lack of a better term). Too busy. Many times I’ve had to take a while to figure out what I was looking at. The detail work was somewhat impressive. In a way, it sort of channels that sense of chaos that comes from this universe’s version of Detroit. You can take it either way.

I can’t recommend this to everyone. I can’t even recommend it to most Robocop fans. You gain nothing from reading it. If you’re looking for something violent, or just want to rinse out some of what you saw in Robocop 2 and 3, then this could be for you. Everyone else should just…

TF2: You're Only As Good As Your Popularity

My title is a half truth. Recently I've been pushing Halo 3 away to jump into some Team Fortress and with the number of people, I can see that not happening much. There are about 3 open rooms open at any given time, but I do search for games to find that there aren't any going on. This saddens me. I really do enjoy playing and want to play some more.

Not only is the Live TF2 community tiny, but no one communicates. No one's organized. I go into a game and everyone's either a fucking Spy or an Engineer. There may be that one Soldier or a Heavy and I'll have to jump in as a Medic. I have to, and it's not that it's bad, but it sucks that I have to pick up after people's stupidity. And when I am Medic, it seems as if they're trying to avoid me. They'll literally continue to run in front of sentries in attempt to destroy them. Of course, I'm not going to try and follow them because I want the Uber charge so we can stand a chance, but nope.

And yes, I know the PC version is far more alive. Way, way more alive, but I can't run that game. So, your suggestions about playing the PC version are lost. I'm not going to upgrade any time soon because my laptop is OK for what I need it for (minus games). I can't afford a new PC.

I was a bit down on TF2 when I first played it. I thought it was cool, but I wasn't into it. After playing a little more I've completely fallen in love. The game is just so damn charming and fun. It's a break from Halo's fragfest only (if you're in matchmaking) gameplay.

My question is, why? Why don't people play this on Live? And if you're on Destructoid and do play TF2 (XBOX 360), send me a request. I'm not great, but I can hold my own in practically any class. I don't mind being the Medic. In fact, it's pretty damn fun sometimes. Also, for those that don't play, try it some more. Get off Counter Strike CoD 4 for a second and try it.

I know a number of kids play from here but the general consensus from the past is that TF2 on 360 seems to lag a bit. Other kids reasons are "Why play TF2 when you can play halo 3 and COD4?" Thats too bad that the 360 community for TF2 isn't alive and well.

I think that issue is almost gone. The lag issues are pretty minor. At least when I play. I have been in one game where there was lag at first, but it corrected itself.

I got this for PC and CoD4 for the 360 (which has a strong community) but it's a damn shame that the people on the 360 aren't playing this more. It's an amazing game and I don't understand the lack of players.

FPS in my opinion are 10 times better on a PC. Find a Clan and your good to go or just randomly get banned from servers for beating the admin on his on server...

I love playing as medic and I did notice that on the 360 version, no one was using the "MEDIC!!" call and some guys from my team with 1/4 hp would run past me without waiting for me to heal them.

I've only tried this once online, but that's cuz I'm having too much fun with Portal, HL2 and COD4 and RB. Sorry but that's what I'm playing right now.

I've played some live TF2 and had it be incredible- people communicate, there is strategy with classes, the game gets played the way you want it to be.
But just as often, there is 0 communication, and it's a pain in the ass.
It's the Halo Syndrome- when playing Halo 3 online, people automatically default to Slayer, regardless of what is being played. And since Live is 90% Halo players, there is a lot of spillover. But there are some good TF2 games to be had- it just takes patience.

I agree. I think the game is amazing but finding a game that isnt so laggy that everyones teleporting around can be a real bitch. I host on dustbowl but it takes around 30 minutes to get a 3 on 3 game going which is ridiculous.

I know what you mean. When I first got Orange Box I was playing the hell out of TF2, but even then there wasn't that many people playing. Then when the lag issues got REALLY bad I eventually just put it away for Halo and CoD4.

It's sad too because I love the game. I've contemplated buying it again for PC but I'm not sure my rig can handle it, I don't have a mic for voice communication, and $30 for TF2 on Steam is hard to justify when I technically already own it.

I think there are a few reasons why it's not doing so well on LIVE. It's a PC centric franchise for one so a lot of the people playing got the PC version, Halo had just come out a month before, and the lag was unbearable and made the game unplayable at times especially coming off of Halo. Plus the server interface isn't very console friendly and I think it might have confused a lot of people. Gears of War's had a really good balance of the PC style and console style and I think most people are used to the Halo system which CoD4's mimics.

But yeah. It's sad.

@atomik

My rig is 4 years old and I can run it fine on medium settings, so if yours is even older than that, you could run it on low (and get a little drunk so you don't notice the low res textures).

The drunk part is optional but you get the idea. The PC version rocks hard.

I'll send you a Live friend request, I'm not on as much as I used to be but I'd love to play some properly strategic TF2.

And to the "just play on PC" crowd, this is why I don't do it.

That's good to know. When I get some extra money I'll probably throw down for it. Also, I'll be wasted.

The search function is a little broken in that game right now, so you don't see all the available games. They are working on a patch. As for people not playing as a team, yes you will definitely encounter that from time to time and it is frustrating, but if you stick it out you will eventually find some players who know what they are doing.

In the past few weeks I've added quite a few orange box friends who know how to play the game, and when I host a match they will frequently join. We usually have some good bouts. So just keep playing and add people that you like to your friends list.

It's nice to see that Valve hasn't ditched the game on the console(s). New maps are coming out as well, right?

I'll keep at it. Hopefully I will find some more people who play more seriously. Just not too seriously. I had one guy yelling at me, calling me a n00b, and cursing out my mother because I didn't live up to his expectations on how good I should be. I had to make fun of him for taking it too serious.

Seriously, you have to have an ancient PC to not be able to run TF2. What are your system specs?

Everyone is playing it on the PC, sadly.

I do enjoy TOB, but everyone that bought it, went with the PC version.

My graphics card won't be able to run it. It's a...Intel Graphics Accelerator, I think. Something like that. My laptop doesn't have a dedicated graphics card.

I have 1.73GHz processor and 1GB of ram according to my system properties.

I'm not into hardware so I'm not too sure, but I do know that I can barely run the original Halo and Half-Life 2 is nearly unplayable.

Ugh, I know what you mean. I have it on the PS3 and I have only been in one (two?) games where one other person had a mic. But when I play, everybody;s class choice is pretty diversified. Excpet for medic. No one ever plays as a medic.

I will be playing the game for the first time very soon(hopefully tonight), so send me a friend request on Live if you want. I usually play around 9pm EST and on, but I can't say for sure if I'll be on tonight since I'm taking my wife to the movies and besides that I've recently injured myself and playing games is hard on my back right now. All that sitting down and stuff.

vexed_alex: Integrated graphics chips are more for basic needs than gaming, but the great thing about Valve's games is that system requirements are generally VERY LOW. The only requirements are it has to be a 256meg card with DX7 support, so pick up a cheapo card on Newegg or wherever with that in mind and it'll likely work. There isn't a huge difference between high and low settings.

The PC version really is very nice, do keep it in mind.

I love TF2 and it's all I play on the PC these days. It drives me crazy that it doesn't seem to be faring to well on the 360. A friend of mine begged me to get Halo 3, and I told him that if the Orange Box 360 (specifically TF2) got as much love as Halo 3 did on the 360, then I would buy Halo 3.

It's not looking too good for him.
