Frank Miller's Robocop
Frank Millar - Steven Grant - Juan Jose Ryp
Avatar Press

The original Robocop was fantastic. It was funny, violent, and it had some things to say about society (though not intelligently). The movie bordered on a thin line of acceptable ridiculousness, and was rather enjoyable cyberpunk flick. Robocop 2 and 3 on the other hand, were awful pieces of shit.

Everyone seems to place the blame on poor old Frank Miller for the dreadful sequels, but he says otherwise. According to him, Hollywood took his screenplay and made drastic changes. Producers of the film claimed that most Miller’s vision was “unfilmable”. Nevertheless, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Miller wasn’t too happy with the way Hollywood worked.

From 2003 to 2006 Avatar Press published nine issues of Frank Miller’s Robocop, now deemed to be the real Robocop sequels by nerds across the globe. The book follows Miller’s original Robocop 2 script, and bit off of Robocop 3 as well. He didn’t write it though. The adaptation was written by Steven Grant, but was looked over by Frank Miller.

With all that said, I don’t know if what Miller had written in his original script was worth all of the drama. The outlining story is practically the same. Detroit is still shitty, OCP still replaces the cops with a private military of criminals, and there is still a “Robocop 2” that Robocop has to battle.

I won’t tell you what differences there are between the movie and comic specifically. What I will say is that they make very little difference towards the end quality. Lewis still has no character, as well as everyone else in the book. Nothing is explored -- a generic and tired formula that begs to be ignored.

Grant does inject a bit of that satire found in the original film, and while it isn’t as good, he still manages to land a few on the bullseye. What is landing one hundred percent is the violence. Some of you could have fun with watching a woman’s burning, melting corpse slam against a wall.

The art was a tad difficult for me to review. While I can’t say it’s necessarily bad, it sure is “busy” (for lack of a better term). Too busy. Many times I’ve had to take a while to figure out what I was looking at. The detail work was somewhat impressive. In a way, it sort of channels that sense of chaos that comes from this universe’s version of Detroit. You can take it either way.

I can’t recommend this to everyone. I can’t even recommend it to most Robocop fans. You gain nothing from reading it. If you’re looking for something violent, or just want to rinse out some of what you saw in Robocop 2 and 3, then this could be for you. Everyone else should just…

I'm sure a few of you have noticed my little blog on Wednesday about my dead XBOX. I was really angry, frustrated, and bored. I come home from work and I have nothing to do. I sit in my room, surf the internet, and stare at that open space on top of my TV where my beloved white box used to be. After a couple of hours of this I become really, really angry and take about a half an hour nap. Then I come back and the process comes full circle.

It's not that I don't have friends or anything, it's just that everyone I know has funky schedules on weekdays. When a few of us aren't working, the rest are, and the ones that aren't working usually have something to do. The only real time to hang out is on weekends, so weekdays had become my core gaming time. Now that my 360 has left the coop I'm left with nothing.

I mean, really. Am I supposed to read a book, watch TV, or watch a movie? There's only so much of that shit I can take. It gets boring after a while. The video game is my favorite entertainment medium. The rest pale in comparison, in my opinion. They really do.

Which brings me to the point of my title; I want a PS3 now. I really do. If I'm not going to be playing my 360 during this entire time, I want something like it to play. Not to mention the fact that I don't have an HD player, but have a 65 inch HD TV. Microsoft's fail has pushed me towards a PS3 purchase.

Now, don't get me wrong. If I had to choose between both systems, I'd go with the 360. I prefer the games library on it over the PS3's, and I love XBOX Live. However, there are some games I'd love to play on Sony's big boy.

The only real problem I have with the PS3 is it's price. I don't think it's overpriced necessarily, but it's a tad expensive for a fresh faced 18 year old barely stepping into the real world. Not to mention the fact that I'm keeping some money for PAX. I also have a problem with buying component cables (seriously, what the fuck?) for an HD movie player.

It's really funny, though. If my 360 was fine and I was spending this time playing my copy Grand Theft Auto and not writing this whiny blog, I wouldn't be considering the PS3. I'd be having fun. They've seriously given Sony a sale. Give me 3 weeks and I'll have that PS3. I can get it in 2 if I don't spend much, but thats highly unlikely for me. Of course, PAX comes first and I'm not buying a PS3 before I get all my PAX things paid for.

P.S. - This is the last, "oh no, Microsoft fails at hardware" posts you'll get from me. Sorry for keeping to one topic. I just don't have anything to play. Well, that's not true. I have a Wii, but I find that console to be highly dull. No More Heroes was "meh." Sorry.

I'm not turning into a mini Wardrox!

As far as the component cables go, seriously check eBay. I got component cables and an HDMI cable for like $7 each.

It's still fucking annoying. No matter how cheap. Especially if it's from Ebay where I have to wait for the damn thing to ship.

I agree, it's annoying, but at least it can be semi-cheap.

I was pissed, also. Sony pushed HD way more than Microsoft did, but all we got was composite. I don't even own an HDTV and it pissed me off, too.

You're jonesing for something to fill that void, eh? And if your 360 makes it back within 3 weeks, would you still be itching for a PS3? I bet you would. If you've got the cash, buy one, it'll be worth it... As June 12th gets closer I'm getting more and more ready to nab one as well. I need to start making room in my entertainment stand...

I totally agree about No More Heroes, by the way. It oozed style but lacked engaging gameplay for the most part. I wasn't as in love with it as most other Wii owners seemed to be. I think Grasshopper Manufacture's best game (that I've played) is Contact. It had a lot going for it, but a kinda odd battle system. Good though...

I always tell in this blog posts that I didnt bought a 360 last year because of the rrod issue. Really, is fucked up, at least you get the warranty, I live in south america, if the thing breaks... well, is like putting money on the toilet.

I could tell you go buy a second 360 to use when the other 360 goes RRoD, but then is the whole hdd issue with your profile, isnt it?
And between a second 360 and a ps3 I would go for the ps3, only for the blu ray player.

Yeah, manta beat me to it. Amazon also has ridiculously cheap HDMI cables — you can get a six-foot cable for under five bucks (including shipping), and it’ll work just as well as one you’d buy from, say, Best Buy, for ten times that much.

You know, it’s funny...Jim wrote that article about the “Xbox Exodus” way back in January or something, and it’s actually starting to come to fruition now. Well, anyway, I hope you do get a PS3, Alex. You know I enjoy mine!

If your TV only takes component (doesn't accept HDMI w/ HDCP) be aware that you will be getting 1080i not 1080p which will max out your FPS at 30. (games use HDCP on PS3 also, don't ask me why i have no idea) Also you can't upscale DVDs over component w/ it; & when they implement ICT (image constraint token) on BD movies you will max out at 960x540 (1080p is 1920x1080).

My PSP and DS aren't afraid to take me away from my console.

And thats when my PS3 starts becoming the music player/visualizer of the group.

Nab the cables now so you have them when you get your PS3. Of course get an HDMI cable if your TV has the capability, and if its just a few extra bucks get a little nicer one than the standard. Also did you only have a 360? Any other consoles like a PS2 or xbox, or did you pawn them when you got your 360? If you have one hook that bitch up and get a little retro until your 360 comes back.

I can't help except to hope your 360 hurry's up and gets back. Either way having an extra movie player is still nice tho. ;D

Btw, I can't help to wonder what kind of TV you had? It doesn't matter too much, but I just wonder if it was maybe some radiated heat or EMF/magnetic interference that could have caused the RROD. I mean, it doesn't matter at the end of the day, but at least I think I know what caused my RROD: pure and simple, Heat from the case art stickers (skin) I used.

I feel your pain, share it with us.

My 360 is still working fine, but I'm prepared for if it dies on me, having my box's box ready to go. If and when this happens, I'll just delve into my PSP/DS/PS2 and all that anime I have to watch.

I think these days, it might be a better idea to own two 360's than one. 360s can be bagged as cheap as a Wii now, but maybe having twice the 360 trouble might help as much as hinder.

Hang in there, it'll get back to you. PS3 is a good idea to consider, when the games pick up in quality.

I've only got a PS3 right now, but I'm considering getting a 360 if/when they introduce a new, smaller model "in the year 2000". A price cut or just a good deal would also help.
Anyway, the PS3 is great and the HDMI cable can be found cheap, like the other guys said. I also have a DS and only rarely use it to study Kanji on or as a Japanese<->English dictionary. I don't see the big deal.
If you get a PS3, get the MGS4 bundle if you dig those games. MGS4 + mostly backward compatibility + dual shock = most of all you need. If you are going to be like me after I bang a girl once and go back on my goal of immediately banging her again as soon as the jizz leaves, then I'd suggest buying the PS3 before you get the 360 back. You might chicken out otherwise. Know what I mean?
