Frank Miller's Robocop
Frank Millar - Steven Grant - Juan Jose Ryp
Avatar Press

The original Robocop was fantastic. It was funny, violent, and it had some things to say about society (though not intelligently). The movie bordered on a thin line of acceptable ridiculousness, and was rather enjoyable cyberpunk flick. Robocop 2 and 3 on the other hand, were awful pieces of shit.

Everyone seems to place the blame on poor old Frank Miller for the dreadful sequels, but he says otherwise. According to him, Hollywood took his screenplay and made drastic changes. Producers of the film claimed that most Miller’s vision was “unfilmable”. Nevertheless, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Miller wasn’t too happy with the way Hollywood worked.

From 2003 to 2006 Avatar Press published nine issues of Frank Miller’s Robocop, now deemed to be the real Robocop sequels by nerds across the globe. The book follows Miller’s original Robocop 2 script, and bit off of Robocop 3 as well. He didn’t write it though. The adaptation was written by Steven Grant, but was looked over by Frank Miller.

With all that said, I don’t know if what Miller had written in his original script was worth all of the drama. The outlining story is practically the same. Detroit is still shitty, OCP still replaces the cops with a private military of criminals, and there is still a “Robocop 2” that Robocop has to battle.

I won’t tell you what differences there are between the movie and comic specifically. What I will say is that they make very little difference towards the end quality. Lewis still has no character, as well as everyone else in the book. Nothing is explored -- a generic and tired formula that begs to be ignored.

Grant does inject a bit of that satire found in the original film, and while it isn’t as good, he still manages to land a few on the bullseye. What is landing one hundred percent is the violence. Some of you could have fun with watching a woman’s burning, melting corpse slam against a wall.

The art was a tad difficult for me to review. While I can’t say it’s necessarily bad, it sure is “busy” (for lack of a better term). Too busy. Many times I’ve had to take a while to figure out what I was looking at. The detail work was somewhat impressive. In a way, it sort of channels that sense of chaos that comes from this universe’s version of Detroit. You can take it either way.

I can’t recommend this to everyone. I can’t even recommend it to most Robocop fans. You gain nothing from reading it. If you’re looking for something violent, or just want to rinse out some of what you saw in Robocop 2 and 3, then this could be for you. Everyone else should just…

I guess now that I've been labeled a PS3 hater by the Sony fans, it's time to hate on the PlayStation 3's biggest title of 2008, right? I mean, I've been going on and on about me disliking stealth games and not really "getting" it (MGS). I even felt regret upon leaving the store. "Do I really want this shit? It's a stealth game. I know I'm going to hate it." I had seen the GameTrailers retrospectives, I was going to play this game, and plus, I could always use Goozex to get rid of it should the game suck.

Well, the start was a rough one. I was really clumsy. I kept getting caught and I kept trying to play the game the way I wanted (a shooter). That's what I was told I could do. Hell, they even said I could play this game as a first person shooter. I did feel a bit let down by that fact, but I went on trying to learn the ways of the stealth shooter.

The further I got, the better the game became. I started to enjoy hiding around and taking guys out when they were alone. I felt like a predator sneaking around and waiting for the right moment to attack it's prey. It was exciting. Even getting caught turned out to be heart pumping thrill-fest as I ran for a hiding spot and taking out any fools that got too close. I felt like a bad ass while hiding like a wimp. There were also moments where I could play this game like a shooter because of newer and better guns.

There's just something that Kojima does that the Splinter Cell guys don't, and it's something that they'll probably never have. I can't really put my finger on it, but there's some magical sprinkle dust that these people sprinke on their game to actually make me enjoy not running into a building with a machine gun Rambo style. It could be the type of items you use, or could be that Snake is the coolest old dude in video game history. I don't know, but it's there.

I thought I would be bitching all the way through about these cut-scenes. They are massive, but they're amazing. For those who've been playing, there's a scene with swords and Gekkos. Not a spoiler, but I'm sure people who have played passed act 2 will know what I'm talking about. That fight scene was fantastic. I didn't care that it wasn't me doing that. Partly because it didn't involve Snake, but mostly because it was just pure motherfucking coolness. That cut scene grabbed me by the nuts.

The weapons upgrading is also fantastic. I love upgrading weapons and I love the fact that it's pretty difficult for me to get them all at once. It lets me appreciate each gun with or without the added modifications. It adds an extra element that keeps the game from constantly feeling the same. I can use a weapon depending on the current situation with ease thanks to the quick and easy to use menu. That's great because I hear the older Metal Gear Solid games had pretty difficult controls.

A lot of the characters are just extremely bad ass and a few of them are extremely creepy. Example? The Gekko and the Beasts. They've got to be the creepiest video game villains I've ever seen. The Gekko's look alone creeps me out, and with that cow moo? It's just weird.

I've also noticed the extreme amounts of attention to detail. Some of that leads to laugh out loud moments. I couldn't believe how hard I laughed when Snake was insulted at one point during the game and his psyche meter went down a bar. There are a few comedic moments in this game that you'll find. A few are in-game and pretty hilarious.

As for story, this thing has it. Sure, it's all told through cut scenes and codec conversations, but it's so rich it doesn't even matter. Remember, this is coming from someone whose Metal Gear Solid information comes from the GameTrailers retrospectives. I sort of regret using that method over playing the games. I did play the first Metal Gear Solid on the Playstation and was instantly turned off. I was really young during the time. Most of my gaming entertainment came from games like Jet Moto 2 so that may be a huge factor. Hopefully I'll get a PS2 or maybe Sony can stop being cunts and give us 40GB owners software PS2 emulation.

Oh, wait. Sorry. I can't complain about the PS3's problems. It's my fault. I'm poor and poor people shouldn't bother trying to make things better for themselves with the amazing art of "bitching." Plus, the PS3 is perfect anyways. No need for any software improvements. I mean, I love doing these slow, inefficient, and frequent updates. :P

Anywho. I'm loving this game a lot. Not too sure I feel the same way about MGO, but by the end I have a feeling I'd probably rate this game a 10. Even though the cover system can be a bit fussy during tense situations. People say it just gets better as you go, so we'll see.

I'm glad you like the game Alex. I felt clumsy as well and I've played and finished every MGS (exept Portable Ops) so that doesn't matter. You really gotta get used to the controls again. I haven't put much time into MGS4 but what I've seen so far is great!

Glad your liking the game. But I have to agree with you on MGO. It just doesnt seem fair to me, in the fact that the enemies aim doesnt judder or get affected when shot. So this just enables people to M4 someone in the back, and they can just turn round with a pistol and headshot you. Doesnt seem fair. Either that, or i suck.
But yeah, MGS4 is awesome.

Don't worry, like Takeshi I've also played through every Metal Gear Solid game there is and I still had a hard time at first with 4. Without a radar at the beginning, things are rough and it seems like the guards aren't exactly as brain dead as they have been in the past games. So it took some getting used to what you could get away with and what you couldn't. Once you do get used to the way things work though, its a blast!

I for one am glad you enjoyed this game having not played the others before! For some reason I have this feeling that whippersnappers that never played any of the series will get this game thinking its a shooter and shit all over it with ignorance. You have restored some of my faith in the younger crowd of gamers. You, young sir, are welcome to stand on my lawn.

Trev is a maniac and I don't believe it. We need proof Jack. You believe him because he said that he got a special item at the end of the game? I REFUSE TO BELIEVE IT! YOU HEAR ME TREV??!!

p.s. If it's true you're bad ass!

I actually know a few people who are are playing this as their first MGS game and they're all eager to go through the others when done. Good stuff.

It isn't that hard to do a No Alert / No Kill run in this game. If you do it on the hardest difficulty though, that is impressive.

Nice write up Alex. I cant wait to play it, but I'll have to because I want to experiance the whole story firsthand insted of watching Gametrailers videos, no offense. I'm currently on the first one, and let me tell you that while the story is great, the controals feel stiff.

I hear you, Takeshi. But you'll see. You'll all see!

...actually, I wonder if you will see when 2.4 does the trophy thing. That sounds like a trophy.

That's what I'm doing next, Para. I can already feel my crushing defeat when I don't make the time limit for the Big Boss rank. I can never make that.

Still angry over that BS yesterday?

Anyway, glad to hear you've had a great time. I finished the game two days ago, and for my money it's one of the best games I've ever played.

And yeah, that fight with Raiden and the Gekko's is fucking amazing. Too bad most of it was seen in trailers already. Still, it was amazing, as was the section on the tank that happened right before (or after? can't remember). That shit was hot.

@Kryptonite,Jack,

It is possible to do the game without any kills or alerts, I did it on solid snake normal, and I beleive I got the race gun, stealth suit, the alerts are easy, the kills however, really are a pain, hit up the guides in order to get help, I did and I gots me the stealth suit
