Console: Playstation 3
To put it lightly, I'm not having much fun. I don't know about you guys, but I've grown up and I don't have the time I used to as a kid to play games. This makes Megaman really frustrating when I've been playing for half an hour and I'm still in the same damn level.
I'm going to try and tread lightly because any time someone dislikes a game or a franchise that's been around since their childhood, things can get extremely emotional.
The good thing about this game is that it
was only $10. It is worth what I paid for and not a penny more. The problem I'm having is that it does force you to learn a level right down to every pixel which stops it from making it a "pick up and play" game. Some people may find this challenge refreshing. I think it's a waste of time. I'm not advancing, and frankly, I just don't care to if it's going to take me so damn long. Like I said, my patience for games doesn't run very long because of my limited time. There are far too many games out there to be focusing on one for this long and not go anywhere with it.
As for the visuals, I've learned to accept them. I personally would have loved a super high resolution 2D Megaman game (I enjoyed Megaman 8). I know that Capcom needed something to get people talking, and 8-bit graphics on a modern game did just that.
I do understand that people enjoy the visuals, but what I find silly is when I say I would have liked high resolution sprites and people tell me the graphics don't matter. Then they'll turn around and grow boners over the fact that it's 8-bit. Didn't you just say it didn't matter? I sense some hypocrisy there, no?
I'm not saying 8-bit is ugly. In fact, I'm enjoying the novelty. The soundtrack is excellent as well. I
personally would have preferred it to look like I was playing an actual cartoon.
I can see the appeal of this game for some people. I, however, am growing more and more frustrated with each restart. I don't shout in glee whenever I beat a level. I sigh in relief and think, "Thank fucking Christ" and wish I don't come back.
I'm just not into it...
P.S. - I'll continue playing it. Don't think of this as a review.
If there are no saves I'm going to cry. I plan on buying this pretty soon.
It's also a way of demonstrating that a good game can exist without the graphical bells and whistles expected of most modern games. So, yes, I'm excited by the way Mega Man 9 looks precisely because I don't think graphics matter in the face of excellent gameplay.
Stick with it. It does become more satisfying the better you get at it.
I'm enjoying the challenge. I do, unlike you I guess, Basically jump around the room when I beat a level though. It's a great feeling to finally achieve something after trying at it for a while.
Thanks man!
I agree with the whole graphics thing! I still go back to MANY snes and PS1 games becuase they were FUN. I really don't like it when a game "tries" to look good but fails as it looks very cheesy.
Yes I do.
;)
@ Heretic
No one fucking likes you.
MM has always been a tough series.
While I don't think a lot of the game's difficulty is down to cheap life-sapping tricks, these are present. The jump to the sub-boss room on Jewel Man's stage for example. I went through 7 lives before I got that jump down.
As you say, there's a need to know every pixel (not literally, imo, but we choose our battles . . . ), and the style happens to lend itself to exacting gameplay. Notice how Mega Man's foot inches over ever so slightly when you tap in a direction? Its small, and sure, that can be translated to larger, prettier sprites, but at the 8-bit scale, its pretty easy to accept as a functional graphic.
Mega Man 7 was one example of bigger "better" graphics mucking up the gameplay experience. It worked, sure. But the over all effect of controlling was significantly different because of the level sizing needed to accomodate those bigger sprites.
Not to say an HD Mega Man isn't possible. Just to say, if you're going to get back to the roots of a series, its effective to go all the way with it.
I don't personally think MM9 is a good one to start with, considering difficulty. Much of what happens in 9 is previously learned skill. Plus ,the bosses are all ridiculously hard compared to say, Mega Man 4 or even Mega Man 2.
That said, any Mega Man game is usually a bit more fun once you get some weapons. I would highly suggest defeating Jewel Man first.
Hope you have more fun!
So did you...
Before you Red Ringed!
And, yes, I was exaggerating when I said every pixel needed to be learned. That should be clear to everyone.

"I like Heretic."
We're never going to let you live this comment down.
I'm just kidding, I play Halo too.
I'm going to make a mental note to ignore you. Your comments and your blogs. They're all equally worthless, and in all honesty - what can one expect from a chanbaby?
All you do is ignite fires for attention. Perhaps if your mother could provide that you wouldn't be searching for it on a website.
I wish you luck in the future. Really, I do. Hopefully by then you won't be such an elitist dick who's committed to delegitimizing other people's opinions.
In summary - I'm done with your stupid ass.
Mega Man V has incredibly easy bosses.
Oh wait, your playing on the PS3.
Guess you'll just have to wait for LBP.
Word Up.
I respect the series, but I moved on to other things, I just don't have time for Mega man games anymore, I only loved the new BC game, that was AWESOME.
Maybe I will 'get it' someday about all the Megaman love, but I'm not holding my breath, nor to I hold my breath, good write up man!
:)
/facepalm
It happens.
:)
This may be the last though. I think I'm nearing the end of that phase (after going through BC Rearmed and Alien Hominid before that).
