Humans are wired to react negatively to things that aren’t “business as usual”. Reaction to Valve’s announcement of Left 4 Dead 2 really was kind of expected, and there really is no reason why you shouldn’t question it. It’s a very odd move for a company that takes years to release titles and is known (with TF2) to have a strong long-lasting support for their games through free updates.

I myself will admit to confusion and a slight disappointment when I first heard about L4D2, but I cooled down after I thought about it. I started asking myself if my reaction would have been different if it were another developer. Then I began to think about the entertainment per dollar that the original game gave me, and suddenly the news didn’t seem so bad.

I totaled around 60 hours of gameplay for a $50 game (on PC). I don’t know about any of you, but that’s an exuberant amount of playtime. If you really didn’t play this much, then you either disliked the game, didn’t have the time, or you’re simply a lonely person. And if you disliked the game, then this news shouldn’t affect you at all. The game’s core mechanic and gameplay goals aren’t going to change with time.

If you did enjoy Left 4 Dead as much as I did, I don‘t see how you can‘t be looking at the outweighing positives. According to the E3 press releases, the game is going to ship with five campaigns, and is actually bringing a few noticeable changes.

But they haven’t even released Half-Life Episode: 3 and they‘re announcing L4D2? Cash-in!

Valve isn’t as small as you’d think. You’ve got to remember that Valve acquired Turtle Rock Studios and they’re the ones doing most of the development work for this game (as well as developing the original L4D). It’s the same ignorant complaint people had for Halo ODST. “Why isn’t Bungie making other games?” Well, they are. This game was handed down to a smaller more focused team.

A year is still too early for another a sequel.

Left 4 Dead was never a game about narrative. It relied on its gameplay for entertainment, and since that’s already established, there really only can be improvements and feature additions to the game. The reason we’re really upset, is because we’re so used to getting things as free updates from this company.

That isn’t to say you won’t be getting that. In a recent interview, rockpapershotgun.com asked Valve if there was a chance of new content coming to the original L4D.

Yeah, there’s certainly a chance of that, and we’re not announcing any of the specifics of that today. Like I say, stay tuned, there’s more coming, there’s more information we’re going to talk about for the sequel, there’s more content coming for Left 4 Dead in the fairly near term, that I think will sort of add to this picture and hopefully change some people’s opinions of what’s happening right now.

In that very same interview, Dough Lombardi revealed exactly how L4D2 came about, and reprised Gabe Newell‘s stance on “entertainment as a service“. Lombardi publicized that L4D2’s conception wasn’t a matter of them wanting to shove a sequel out before Christmas. The creation of L4D2 came from ideas being tossed out, and the appropriate ways to distribute them to the public. Smaller ideas better fitting for updates, are just that. Updates. The more grandiose ideas were/are being saved for the sequel as they’re obviously going to take time to develop.

Call me crazy, but that kinda’ seems totally fair to me.

But Team Fortress 2 gets all of these updates and it's a much older game. Why can't L4D2 just be a L4D update?

I hate to say, but Team Fortress 2 is a much simpler game to update. You get class updates sprinkled throughout the year, and a couple of game-type modes and maps added. That isn't the same as adding actual campaign maps, characters with thousands of lines of dialogue, or any other of the bigger updates being released.

Left 4 Dead isn't just a multiplayer versus game.

So you’re saying I should be excited and not skeptical?

I personally am. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have doubts. You should always have doubts, but sprinkle in some optimism; especially for a company that rarely seems to let its fans down. This obviously is something new, but we shouldn’t be so quick to jump down on Valve’s throat when we don’t know any of the specifics. This goes for any game.

I got my money’s worth from Left 4 Dead and then some. I’m perfectly fine with paying another $50 for an enhanced version with new content of a game I had a blast with. I loved the crap out of Fallout 3, and I’ve already paid $45 to expand my experience. This doesn’t seem much different.

I guess when you’re used to something, it hurts slightly more.

My name is Kyousuke Nanbu.

You’re just here to remind us that you hate Valve like you do in any post relating to them, aren’t you?

I really got my moneys worth out of L4D, there is just enough content announced so far that makes me happy to buy the sequel.

I'm going to miss the original characters though....
I was pissed off at first, but now im kinda excited about it. My main complaint is that Valve said that they wanted to provide updates and support like thay did with TF2 a bit before L4D came out, now they are going back on their word. I hope this isnt a trend Valve wish to follow but i can forgive them if this is a one off.
You can't tell me that the final line in the trailer is one of the coolest one-liners ever uttered.
I totally agree with everything you said in this post and endorse this product. It's crazy the sheer amount of internet nerd rage over this, but for some people once their thought train gets rolling its hard to stop or change direction.
You know whats really cool? Good video games.

Left 4 Dead 2 is going to be a good video game. Just like Left 4 Dead. Therefore it is cool.

I'm not one to complain about the whole buisness side of things, because I have no idea how the buisness works. All I've ever wanted is good gaming, and that's what Valve deliver.
I dont think you're quite right about the campaign, when comparing it to TF2's updates. A lot of work goes into those updates (for better or worse); theyve got to create new models, and lately, program entirely new gameplay ideas (eg, the Dead Ringer), besides making new maps (some, like the new Pipeline, are new gametypes, requiring additional effort). I think it would be entirely reasonable to expect a new campaign every few months, if they were dedicated to updating the game in a similar fashion.

The main problem I have with L4D2, is simply that most of the new stuff is stuff that could, or even should have been integrated into L4D from the start; probably with just a few extra months of development. You rightly point out that making this many new campaigns and creating new characters will take some time; but what about the melee weapons? The source engine is GOOD at those. Incendiary ammo? Hardly an exciting new idea. New undead beasts wouldnt be impossible to add, on the scale of a TF2 update. Even updates to the A.I director would be pretty feasible.

It just seems, to me, that L4D was kind of a beta, a very polished one, but still a beta, and we paid for it. I've had good times with beta's, but that doesnt mean I instantly give my money to the developers and promise them more on release day.

In conclusion, i guess its not that I have a problem with L4D 2. In fact, I'm quite looking forward to it (levels that change is probably the thing i like best, also hoping for some cool new weapons). I just feel like I was duped into buying L4D, and am a little annoyed at what I'm gonna be paying overall for this.

However, it takes the sting away a little to think that it probably wont take a huge effort to bring the old campaigns and characters over to the new systems, so at least L4D 2 shouldn't have a lack of content.
Not sure what the problem is here:

- The people that don't like L4D (which there are plenty of), will still hate it.

- The people that like L4D will buy it and play it.

Valve is a business, they don't care about you or your wallet. L4D titles can be produced cheaply and quickly since it's essentially a level pack. I fully expect "Guitar Hero"-esque milking of the title moving forward.
HOW DARE YOU MAKE SENSE!
inb4 Nanbu.

I was mixed on this and generally I still am. I love L4D whenever I bother to play it and I just thought L4D2 was just coming too soon. While it's great L4D will still get updated and whatnot, I just figure a few more could've been put up with the original.

but then you reminded me about the dialouge and whatnot. That alone is a lot of space to be trying to "update" if we were to get a lot more campaigns. While i'm not agreeing to L4D2 so soon, i'm not fighting against it.
I bought L4D day one and I still don't feel I've gotten my money's worth out of it so the L4D 2 announcement really pissed me off.

Hell L4D is still broken and unplayable for me. By unplayable I mean retards and rage quitters ruin the experience. Why is this valve's fault? Because those morons at valve decided PC gaming needed matchmaking. I can't just hop on one of my favorite servers because matchmaking floods it with retards.

Ohh yeah and to any of the "Play with your friends" tards. A) My friends aren't always on 24/7. B) Sometimes too many friends are on. What does this mean? It means friends are excluded from the game because valve decided to design a game with a fixed player count.

I've been excluded. I've had to exclude others. It just leaves you feeling shitty on both ends and it was a major design flaw.

So yeah. Fix L4D valve before you announce a cash grabbing sequel.
never played it. probably never will, so i don't really care all too much.
@Iron Dragon: That's probably the most hilarious response I've ever gotten in one of my blogs.

AND BEFORE ANYONE SAYS I DON'T HAVE FRIENDS, SHUT UP! I HAVE TOO MANY FRIENDS! I HAVE SO MANY THAT LAME 4 DUMB DOESN'T LET ME PLAY WITH ALL OF MY BESTEST FRIENDS! >:(

Thanks for the laughs, buddy.
@ Iron Dragon:
It allows for 8 players in versus, what's the problem? What do you want, 16 players? Are you familiar with good game design? The player count is perfect for the game they designed. 4 more players per side would make versus retardedly chaotic and too in favor of the infected. And, on the human side, it would destroy the tension of working as a small group seemingly against the odds by allowing you to just split into multiple groups and raping your way through without fear.

And you call it "broken" because of matchmaking? I play the 360 version, so I'm unfamiliar with the PC, but on 360 you can create your own private sessions and then open them up to the public after your friends have joined. I would be stunned if it isn't similar on PC.

Broken my ass, L4D is fucking awesome. But, regarding the blog topic, I'm not so greedy as to expect them for free, but I'd still rather get paid DLC updates than a full-priced game
"My name is Kyousuke Nanbu.

You are one petty little bitch.

Excuse for expressing my opinion about the game, everytime a L4D2 topic rolls around in the main page people say the same stuff, I'm just saying what's on my mind.

Its cool you're so happy, its your money, if you like throwing it away that's your prerogative.

I simply think they should fix and continue adding the content they promised to L4D1 before they talk sequel.

I mean, you really think they plan to keep supporting L4D1 as soon as 2 comes out and becomes a big hit? Please say yes so I can laugh at you.

Oh and its nice to know you kids are always thinking of me, makes a man feel special :)

Enjoy having Valve's cock rammed up your ass and service your account.
@ Blasto: Matchmaking destroys any hope of a community. I can't just drop in on a clan server and find regulars, play with them for a few rounds, and then drop out so someone else can join in. Matchmaking is pretty much why xbox live is a giant pool of jackasses.

@Vexed Alex: I pointed that out because everytime I complain about the general stupidity found in Left 4 Dead the response is always "Get friends". Thank you for the douche response though.

It's still a valid complaint about the game. Why doesn't the game scale? 2-6 with varying difficulty / enemy counts? The original design of 4 and only 4 on a team is too narrow.

Meh not like any of this matters. I'm lucky to see even one person on my friends list play L4D now. Everyone got bored with it.
Quite frankly I haven't attacked anyone that didn't have it coming, mostly the myriad of trolls or Chrono for trying to Reaprar.

So adding that little section was really pathetic and petty, especially coming from you who's constantly being an asshole troll in the IRC room, again a d-toid member shows what a hypocritical loser he is, maybe you guys should form a group though maybe it wouldn't last considering how 2 faced so many of you are.

Goddamn when is that ignore feature comming? I'm dying to make use of it already.
Blah blah blah it should be an expansion pack.
Excuse me, but aren’t you the one who’s constantly berating people for bad mouthing Halo in every fucking post? Don’t start mouthing off about people being hypocrites when you’re the biggest one here, you imbecile.

I don’t care that you don’t like Left 4 Dead or any other Valve developed game. My experience isn’t altered in any way. What that little quip was meant to do is point out how malice your intents are and just how much you haven‘t changed. It isn’t about expressing an opinion. It’s about pacifying your bitter butt-hurt self. You’re still just an overly negative, aggressive, asinine person.

And just when the fuck have you been in IRC? It’s absolutely astounding how ill-informed you are of certain things yet you still manage to make these ludicrous accusations, halfwit.

Get over yourself, you smug douche bag.
The ridiculous number of cries of "I WILL NEVER BUY A VALVE GAME AGAIN" are just adorable. Valve decides to -for once- make a sequel to a fantastic game a year after it comes out instead of add barrels of free content like they usually do, and people decide they're the next Hitler. I can't think of a time I've hated the average person on the internet more than in the last few days.

Also, Nanbu is physically incapable of expressing an opinion without also needlessly insulting anyone who disagrees with him. He is the most astoundingly inflammatory poster I have ever seen.
Wow Kyousuke, you made a mess again.

Anyway, on topic, my only complaint was the release in just 1 year after its first installment, but damnit you have changed my mind.

And fuck anyone who talks shit about the IRC.
I don't get why people are so up in arms over this. I have probably put over a hundred hours into Left 4 Dead. It's a fantastic game, and I'll gladly give them more money for more of it.
lol Agreed.
With ENTIRE post.

Good on you Vexed.
Nanbu should not have read this blog.
He should have just left you for dead.
Anyway, I'm excited for another one. Whiny assholes are annoying.
Have you seen some of the gameplay vids? The player sucks, and it's prety funny.
rofl at nanbu status
@Nanbu

Take that cock bitch, suck it dry.
STOP TROLLING GAIZ
As far as I am concerned, Valve can release a new L4D game every year for the rest of time. As long as they add new weapons, new specials, and base everything in different cities, I'm cool.

I played the demo on the show floor twice and it's just as fast paced and fun as it ever was. Plus, the daytime setting helps to show off some new subtle blood and damage effects really well. It really is a great looking and great playing title and in the end, isn't that what any of us wants our games to be?
No. We hate the release of new games.
"xbox live is a giant pool of jackasses."

nope thats just because of all the little kids who have no respect.
