Frank Miller's Robocop
Frank Millar - Steven Grant - Juan Jose Ryp
Avatar Press

The original Robocop was fantastic. It was funny, violent, and it had some things to say about society (though not intelligently). The movie bordered on a thin line of acceptable ridiculousness, and was rather enjoyable cyberpunk flick. Robocop 2 and 3 on the other hand, were awful pieces of shit.

Everyone seems to place the blame on poor old Frank Miller for the dreadful sequels, but he says otherwise. According to him, Hollywood took his screenplay and made drastic changes. Producers of the film claimed that most Miller’s vision was “unfilmable”. Nevertheless, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Miller wasn’t too happy with the way Hollywood worked.

From 2003 to 2006 Avatar Press published nine issues of Frank Miller’s Robocop, now deemed to be the real Robocop sequels by nerds across the globe. The book follows Miller’s original Robocop 2 script, and bit off of Robocop 3 as well. He didn’t write it though. The adaptation was written by Steven Grant, but was looked over by Frank Miller.

With all that said, I don’t know if what Miller had written in his original script was worth all of the drama. The outlining story is practically the same. Detroit is still shitty, OCP still replaces the cops with a private military of criminals, and there is still a “Robocop 2” that Robocop has to battle.

I won’t tell you what differences there are between the movie and comic specifically. What I will say is that they make very little difference towards the end quality. Lewis still has no character, as well as everyone else in the book. Nothing is explored -- a generic and tired formula that begs to be ignored.

Grant does inject a bit of that satire found in the original film, and while it isn’t as good, he still manages to land a few on the bullseye. What is landing one hundred percent is the violence. Some of you could have fun with watching a woman’s burning, melting corpse slam against a wall.

The art was a tad difficult for me to review. While I can’t say it’s necessarily bad, it sure is “busy” (for lack of a better term). Too busy. Many times I’ve had to take a while to figure out what I was looking at. The detail work was somewhat impressive. In a way, it sort of channels that sense of chaos that comes from this universe’s version of Detroit. You can take it either way.

I can’t recommend this to everyone. I can’t even recommend it to most Robocop fans. You gain nothing from reading it. If you’re looking for something violent, or just want to rinse out some of what you saw in Robocop 2 and 3, then this could be for you. Everyone else should just…

I Love You Destructoid - Goodbye
vexed alex | 3:06 AM on 09.26.2008 53 comments

...For now.

I think many of us haven been through a moment in our lives where something we love dearly begins to tire us out. Well, that’s what is happening with me. I’ve been buying and playing so much that I’ve overloaded myself, and I just can’t find myself enjoying anything. I was greedy

I know no one is going to think this is a big deal. You shouldn’t think it’s a big deal, but I’ve decided to take a break from anything video game related. That includes this wonderful website. There’s not a word in the dictionary than can help me express my love for Destructoid. This is the very reason why I’ll never leave, and it is going to be hard to stay away from this place and it’s wonderful community members. Seriously, you guys are fucking family and I love you. I can’t wait for PAX next year. I will fuck the brains out of all of you. I’ll even do those that are unwilling (Wardrox).

I’d also like to take this moment to say sorry to anyone who I’ve been a dick to. I can be an idiot sometimes (well, a lot of the time). I don’t want to be on anyone’s bad side (although, sometimes you just can‘t avoid it). I love Destructoid for the very reason that the majority of this site consists of extremely rad people. For the most part, everyone’s awesome. Just look at the waterfall of NARP posts that get put up on the cblogs within the year! I take pride in saying that I’ve met some of you and I’d hate to be on bad terms with anyone.

It’s going to be hard to keep myself from Destructoid’s unofficial IRC as well. Some of the most radest people on the site are on there chatting away. Aerox, Knives, Coonskin05, Lemon, Necros, Conrad Zimmerman, CTZ sometimes visits, Wardrox, Ub3rslug, Macca, CountingConflict, King3vbo (needs to be in there more), and a lot more. Seriously, if you haven’t been, go (#destructoid @ irc.dynasty.net).

I hope no one gets offended I didn’t add them. It’s late and I want to make this quick.

And, yes. This post was more about me expressing my appreciation. Niero, sir. I don’t think you remember me, but I sure as hell remember meeting you. I’ll never forget that party after E3 (the slide!). It was a pleasure meeting you and I hope to see you again. That goes for everyone in this incredible community!

Wish me luck…I hope to be back loving games like I did before soon!

P.S. - It’s 1:06 in the morning right now. Excuse the horrible writing. Although, those who read my blogs should be used to this mediocrity. :D

<3

P.P.S. - Give me like one or two weeks before you see my ass running back here.

:D

Damn...I'm honestly trying to not get torn up in this. I am such a pussy. Alex, you paid for 1/3 of our hotel room for PAX and should have been there. I was really looking forward to meeting you. Hopefully it won't be before the next PAX before I do. You are an awesome dude, as witnessed in IRC, even if you think retro gamers are haters. :p Come back soon man.

I know what we'll do. We'll put a fence between him and Dtoid. Being a Mexican, he will simply hop the fence back. We will then make the fence higher and out of stone so he can never leave.

Never.

Nonsense! Whatever you do, don't stop gaming. You'll regret it. Even if its just for a half hour a day. Pick a good little DS or PSP game, and chip away at it, a little at a time. Your life, wherever it finds you, will be more enjoyable for it. Trust me.

Mega Man 9 did this to you, didn't it?

If I'd have seen this coming, I would have given it a 5/10 at the most. Any game that makes Vexed Alex quit videogames must be the devil in disguise.

Spending all my nights
All my money going out on the town
Doing anything just to get you off of my mind
But when the morning comes
I'm right back where I started again
Trying to forget you is just a waste of time

Baby come back, any kind of fool could see
There was something in everything about you
Baby come back, you can blame it all on me
I was wrong, and I just can't live without you

All day long, wearing a mask of false bravado
Trying to keep up the smile that hides a tear
But as the sun goes down
I get that empty feeling again
How I wish to God that you were here

Baby come back, any kind of fool could see
There was something in everything about you
Baby come back, you can blame it all on me
I was wrong, and I just can't live without you

Now that I put it all together
Give me the chance to make you see
Have you used up all the love in your heart
Nothing left for me
Ain't there nothing left for me

Baby come back, any kind of fool could see
There was something in everything about you
Baby come back, listen, you can blame it all on me
I was wrong, and I just can't live without you

I was wrong, and I just can't live

I agree with Tamz. Read. Whenever I get burned out on games, I read a book or a few graphic novels(if you need any suggestions, PM me). Also, I second that TV is shit, so don't look there for comfort. Don't stay gone too long, I don't want to read a "remember me guyz!" post from you a year from now.

I know we don't really know each other but please take a little advice. You should think about achieving some balance in your life if you are feeling burned out, not simply jump to one extreme from the other; completely vicing one of your greatest joys will not do you any better than raping it.

Find some balance. If it's all just too much for you, then dedicate a couple of hours to game related entertainment a day/week/whatever, maybe even organize your games by how much you want to play them and then work through them 1 at a time.

The point I'm trying to make is that completely voiding yourself of something you have been experiencing and loving for years is a terrible idea, make some compromises and continue doing what you love to do; and you know you do.
