Halo 3 Friday Night Fights: Que Chingados? [Contest Update]
vexed alex | 1:31 PM on 04.25.2008 20 comments

Leeeet’s get ready to ruuumbleeeee!

So, after taking a being away last week, I’m back for some more plasma sticks, beat downs, head shots, and vehicle mayhem. I’m ready to plant some bombs, capture some flags, and kill some zombies. I hope you guys are too, and I hope you brought your game faces because tonight is going to focus a lot on competitive matches. Don’t be frightened. We’ll still run our crazy-funky gametypes, but I thought tonight would be a cool time see people’s skills put to the test.

Tonight’s games will range from stock objective based games, to some SWAT. From competitive games we’ll move a long and play our usual zombie chase matches and funky “random weapons spawn” odd ball/king of the hill games. The casual games, if you will. It’s too bad Ghost Town isn’t free because that map is great not only for killing each other, but King of the Hill is a blast. I could also see it turning into a good map to play infection on.

If you do have the new maps, stick with us throughout the night. We’ll eventually play them, but not after the wee hours of the morning - probably around 2 AM Eastern or somethin’. Of course that all could change depending on the conditions, but that change is most likely to mean that we’ll play them earlier than predicted.

The games begin between 9 and 10 PM Eastern/6 and 7 PM Western. If you see my gamertag on Halo 3 during those hours, throw me a message. I’ll send you an invite. As far as sending friend requests go, send me a message as well. My list is 96% full. I have to go on a friend deletion run soon. As always, please PM me if you have any new maps you want to run, or you can ask for host during the night. I’m pretty liberal with my hosting duties so don’t be afraid to ask for anything. Mi casa es su casa. Comprende?

Contests?

Look for a post from me later this month. You guys have given me such awesome nights on Fridays when I don’t have anything to do (which is most of them). I want to give back, but to not be a rank whore, I’m holding this baby on FNF. So this means you won’t need to have some insane photoshopping skills, or need to have amazing writing skills (God knows I don’t), and it won’t be a “be number X in the comments to win.” It's like a cheap way to rank up. Not that I care about my rank or anything, but it's still wrong.

I’ll give out more details later on, so look out for that. Also, chances are you won’t have to be a Halo master; however, it will affect your chances of winning. I will leak out the prize, which will be a simple couple of points cards. How much and how many will be revealed later.

P.S. - Tonight is going to be drama free. I promise you. Salman and Heretic aren't going to say a word to each other, and if they do, and it's to bitch to each other, the bannings will commence.

Contest update: I've decided to let you all know what the prizes are going to be. The first two winners are going to get $20 worth of Microsoft points, and I haven't decided, but the last winner may end up getting $50 worth of Microsoft points. Again, I'll explain the rules later, so keep an eye out.

Halo FNF for Friday the 25th of April is now over.

I just bought the map pack last night and I'm totally ready for some Halo. No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to get into CoD4 again, despite how much I like it. I've made my peace with Halo, though. Up until now, it's always been "that one game that I only play a lot because I don't have any other online shooters", but I think I like it more than I thought now.

Anyway, I'll most likely be on for Halo tonight.

Frank Miller's Robocop
Frank Millar - Steven Grant - Juan Jose Ryp
Avatar Press

The original Robocop was fantastic. It was funny, violent, and it had some things to say about society (though not intelligently). The movie bordered on a thin line of acceptable ridiculousness, and was rather enjoyable cyberpunk flick. Robocop 2 and 3 on the other hand, were awful pieces of shit.

Everyone seems to place the blame on poor old Frank Miller for the dreadful sequels, but he says otherwise. According to him, Hollywood took his screenplay and made drastic changes. Producers of the film claimed that most Miller’s vision was “unfilmable”. Nevertheless, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Miller wasn’t too happy with the way Hollywood worked.

From 2003 to 2006 Avatar Press published nine issues of Frank Miller’s Robocop, now deemed to be the real Robocop sequels by nerds across the globe. The book follows Miller’s original Robocop 2 script, and bit off of Robocop 3 as well. He didn’t write it though. The adaptation was written by Steven Grant, but was looked over by Frank Miller.

With all that said, I don’t know if what Miller had written in his original script was worth all of the drama. The outlining story is practically the same. Detroit is still shitty, OCP still replaces the cops with a private military of criminals, and there is still a “Robocop 2” that Robocop has to battle.

I won’t tell you what differences there are between the movie and comic specifically. What I will say is that they make very little difference towards the end quality. Lewis still has no character, as well as everyone else in the book. Nothing is explored -- a generic and tired formula that begs to be ignored.

Grant does inject a bit of that satire found in the original film, and while it isn’t as good, he still manages to land a few on the bullseye. What is landing one hundred percent is the violence. Some of you could have fun with watching a woman’s burning, melting corpse slam against a wall.

The art was a tad difficult for me to review. While I can’t say it’s necessarily bad, it sure is “busy” (for lack of a better term). Too busy. Many times I’ve had to take a while to figure out what I was looking at. The detail work was somewhat impressive. In a way, it sort of channels that sense of chaos that comes from this universe’s version of Detroit. You can take it either way.

I can’t recommend this to everyone. I can’t even recommend it to most Robocop fans. You gain nothing from reading it. If you’re looking for something violent, or just want to rinse out some of what you saw in Robocop 2 and 3, then this could be for you. Everyone else should just…
